FInally giving in to the shouts of "CE IS THE BEEEEST", and having only played co-op briefly with my cousin, I went out and bought the first Halo for myself.
All I can say is, the first half of the game was brilliant. The alien feeling of the surroundings, and the combat, and the weapon balance was great.
It was maybe 2/3 in, that it started getting a bit lacklustre. The game was, in bullet points:
- HOLY SHOOT HELP ENEMIES EVERYWHERE
- Suck it, alien scum!
- OH GOD WHAT IS THIS, THIS IS AMAZING
- Oh, look a Hunter, I'll just- wait, what? I'm dead?
- *Halo Theme Tune* Ba da da da, da da da da, da da da da...
- Sweeet, HUUUGE battles.
- Snipe snipe snipe. *Saves SR for on the ship, raeps Zealots with it
- I'm a giant space badass.
- CORRIDORS CORRIDOORS CORRIDOORS
- HOLY SHOOT FLOOD AARGH THEY'RE ACTUALLY SCARY
- Oh fork you, 343. SHOTGUN-SHOTGUN-SHOTGUN-DEAD.
- CORRIDORS CORRIDORS CORRIDORS
- CORRIDORS CORRODOORS DORROCORS
- Fuel Rod Grunts you can't even steal the weapon from? With no regard to their own health as they shootgiant glowing snot at you? CRUD.
- Sweeeet, TIMED ESCAPE FROM A SELF-DESTRUCT, Metroid style!
- FFS, Warthogs really suck in this game.
Overall, I loved it, but it got reeeally repetitive towards the end, especially. I think not being able to pick up the FRG and Sword soured it a little, I would have loved slicing up some Spec. Ops guys, or duelling a Zealot.
I can see why it's heralded as the best Halo game. But it DOES have flaws. a solid 8.5/10 for me. Only drawbacks was the repetitiveness of the Forerunner/Covie levels, and frankly horrible vehicle controls, compared to Halo 3 anyway.
