The Mythic Threads (Halo 3) (ODST) (Reach)

Man, it looked really cool in its early days! I wonder how they would play out.

every single concept was better than the final map.

...as long as they had a spartan laser on.

Holy crap. Old Sandtrap was sooooo much cooler than new Sandtrap.

But DIPPING STICKS Skyler...

"There are shadows for the shadows of things, as a reflection seen in a mirror of a mirror. We know there are circles within circles and dimensions beyond dimension. Reality is itself a shadow, only an appearance accepted by those whose eyes shun what might lie beyond." -Louis L'Amour-

I love learning about the trial and error that goes on behind the scenes of multiplayer map construction. I'm sure that some scrapped pieces of larger warthog combat will materialize into some amazing map in the future. Keep up the good stuff!!!

I've always wondered about a BTB map in which an attacking team had to plow their way down into a valley or deep depths of a box canyon via choke points, jeep trails, and gullies to reach a flag. Then once the attackers got ahold of the flag they'd soon realize the hard part of retracing tracks back up to their stronghold had just begun.

I can imagine trying to infiltrate into a canyon stronghold and extract out of a maze landscape like this of jeep trails, dueling smooth half-pipe-like canyons carved out by water, scattered Forunner Ruins, cliffs complete with sniper overhangs and footpaths. It would be the ultimate vehicle ambush/chase map ever.

Thank you Bungie for your hard work that inspires future video game level designers!!!

The secret of Sandtrap lives on!

Very nice, love the information.

  • 03.11.2010 2:33 PM PDT

Good stuff as always! I love these kind of behind the scenes stuff of the MP maps. Keep them coming. I love the early concept art. Sandtrap is my favorite BTB map of all time besides blood gulch.

Interesting, I'll have to go try to remember what I learned from the secret code book that I read in elementary school which explained how you can use the frequency of letters to try to break codes where individual letters are replaced with symbols.

...But no mention of the Elephant?

That's pretty good for 2 hours of music without explosions and people yelling. I don't care if you steal it, but God does...

As always, very well done. Keep up the good work, urk.

We're building a better world...all of them, better worlds.

Awesome article, urk! I love these retrospectives. It would be awesome to get some campaign map analysis, too. I hope you guys continue to do this through Reach and beyond.

Bugs in halo reach final game as of 9/2/10

in forge i am trying to make gametypes objectives but all i see is hill markers and flag points. If im trying to make a ctf game variant and i use the capture point and the flag stand and go into custom games. There is always a error saying "map not compatible with gametype" This is not just with ctf but with most other custom game and map variants.
EDIT: this was just a understanding issue that was cleared post-game release

its gonna be a sick map. cant wait to drive the falcon on it!
lol jk but they should really reconsider and make this a map in halo reach

Can't be too careful with your company. I can feel the devil walking next to me.

That first concept is beautiful. It's really cool to see how these environments came to be. Can we get some single player stuff next Thursday?

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

From what I gathered from the interview it seems that the Secret of Sandtrap is all community conspiricy.

Spartan II-151
Look, just talk to me. I'm sure we'll get along.

I sense an even bigger map coming from this genius for Reach...

A large man

Like he said, the forerunner writing which appears on sandtrap and on epitaph lead to some secret.

:( This was good in all but I think that the community needs to know about the secret of Sandtrap before the release of Halo: Reach...

Yea, I agree, but they did leave a clue. About the text being translated and that it has something to to with Epitaph as well.

Chief vs the scarab? I find that hard to believe to roundhouse boot the scarab's figurative emotion out of the gaming zone.

...But no mention of the Elephant?

Nope, and I am a bit disappointed by that. Oh well, it was a really cool read. I can't wait for the next one.

Will is everything.

I absolutely love these breakdowns of maps and different levels. It really is fascinating seeing what kind of work and thought processes are behind some of our favorite maps. So cool seeing Sandtrap in its beginning stages. Definitely gives you perspective on something you take for granted is going to be included in the game.

  • 03.11.2010 7:58 PM PDT

Will is everything.

On a related note I wonder if they will pursue the multi-stage or objective style maps for Halo: Reach. I.e., activating an object might open a whole new area. Might be really interesting and different for a Halo game.

My Best Bungie moment: finally beating all the Halo games on solo legendary.
My Worst Bungie moment: not seeing giant stuffie grunts in the Bungie store.

Awesome, these map things are the best.

Some explanation of how the elephant worked its way onto the map from a design perspective would have been cool.
