At eight years old, I remember hearing about Halo being released and was never interested. I was a fan of Nintendo's games (still am) and dismissed Halo as some stereotypical mindless shooter game. At nine years old, I played Halo at my neighbor's house. He was three and his dad was a Halo fan who bought an Xbox and Halo: Combat Evolved. I had never played a first-person game before, so I immediately had some trouble. That kid beat me so badly that I had absolutely no fun at all. I could hardly even look around and he was just riding along in a Ghost on Blood Gulch, looking at my screen to see where I was, and mowing me down. That left a sour taste in my mouth.
Later the same year, I was in the video games section of Walmart when I stopped to watch a video of Halo. Having heard a lot about it at school, I wanted to see what made this thing so great. The video had several very colorful armored men with orange visors talking to one another in such idiotic and stereotypical ways that I could not believe that this is what had become so popular. Little did I know the video was of Red vs. Blue.
The next time I played Halo was with a friend at the age of eleven. Halo 2 had been released and kids at school were talking about Halo again. My friend played the game too and wanted me to play. By this time I had played the Metroid Prime games, so the first-person concept was no longer alien to me; but I was still hesitant. He really wanted me to play, and got me to watch him play instead.
To my great surprise, there were aliens in Halo. All these years, I had no idea that Halo was science fictional. As a science fiction fan that was an immediate plus for me. My next surprise was that the characters were not idiotic. He got me to play with him on split-screen, and, even though I suck at it, I found myself having fun. It was at this moment that I learned a lesson that I always think about to this day--always give everything a chance before deciding on a final judgment.
For my twelfth birthday, I got an Xbox. My friend let me borrow his copy of Halo 2. I took it home, played through the campaign, and loved it. Then my neighbors let me borrow their copy of Halo: Combat Evolved. I played through that, and loved it too. I just couldn't believe how good it was. The plot twists were amazing, the characters were rich, the cutscenes were very well done, it had a truly epic feel, and it was very exciting to play through. Later I got Xbox Live and discovered a whole other fun aspect to the game, and Halo 2 became my favorite game.
Now I'm a Halo fan and a Bungie fan. It's a good thing my friend made me play Halo.
