I apologize in advance if I do anything stupid guys - I'm realy steamed.

The Story:

I got blacklisted a week ago by Nofateru_Soldie. I recieved no explanation as to why. When I PM'ed him asking why, he couldn't tell me why. He asked that I wait a week, in spite of my apologies and pleas. I've waited. In the meantime, though, I've logged out and looked for what transgression I might have commited. This is what I found:

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=4110287

That's fine - a little harsh, but that's fine. I apologized and said I'd try not to do it anymore. (Aside - I was making a point that folks who use all caps in our forums only serve to degrade the quality of our forums; the thread was aimed at a certain group of individuals who had been stirring up trouble and were provoking flames.)

I had but one request of Nosfateru_Soldie - I begged him not to unsticky my thread on the Halo CE Stats Project. Stosh himself stickied that for me. I've spent the past three months developing the project so that we could have real-time H2-style stats for HCE... and now - HPC too.

And now - I find the thread is not only no longer listed, but is locked. I can find it from the link I had on my website, but I can't reply and I've browsed the forums past the date of my blacklisting - its not there.

It only lives on here:

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=3188275

I'm upset. I've put a lot of time into trying to enrich the HPC Community. This project has the potential to affect the way tens of thousands of people experience Halo. Stosh himself stickied this for me. I'm just in shock of what has happened to my thread. I cooperated with the blacklisting, although no official reason was given, I apologized even, and asked that something like this not happen.

Now, I'm not saying Nosfateru_Soldie did this... any mod has the power (as well as the soul), but I really hope that something can be done to correct this. I wanted to let you guys know before I PM'ed Stosh.

At least tell me why this happened. It gives the appearance that Bungie doesn't want the HPC community enriched.

I believe that any posts made by a blacklisted member are automatically locked, so it was probably automatic and not someone's personal jab at you. [EDIT: not true... sorry] Most likely, if you PM stosh, explain that you understand what you did was wrong and that you won't do stupid stuff like that again, and then explain that the previously stickied thread still has value to the community, he'll probably have no problem getting it back on there.

Good luck. I hope you learned your lesson, though.

don't worry about the mods, they all have issues

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

No, when somebody is blacklisted their posts are not automatically locked. However, if you PM stosh and explain he'll probably unlock it and sticky it again.

Yup. Oh and a thread about caps in The Maw?

I wouldn't exactly call it abuse, although it is pretty harsh. Uh.. I'll just go with what everybody else said :p

I'm rubber, you're glue.
Your words bounce off of me and stick to you!

Seriously, I'm accustomed to being hated because of my status. It's nothing new to me. You're not "cool" anymore unless you bitterly oppose anyone with the slightest amount of authority. After the 3rd death threat in a day, someone saying I "have issues" just doesn't bother me much.

As for your blacklist, poster, it's done and over. Policies were followed. If you were indeed banned for the spammy caps thread, that's okay by me. You shouldn't have done it. As for the sticky - posts by blacklisted users are locked, and probably subsequently unstickied.

So in conclusion, I say get over it and stop assuming.

That seems overly harsh considering what your doing for your particular side of the community. I thought you would have atleast got a warning and that thread locked but you got blacklisted aswell.

I'm not one to rise against the power, but I remember Psyched's thread in The Flood. Something to do with "Bungie.net Quote of the Year 2004", which was not locked or unstickied when Psyched was blacklisted.

....Heathen!

-S

Threads are not locked automatically when a user is blacklisted. However, it's SOP for a moderator to scan the forum quickly after a blacklisting to make sure that user didn't have any threads open, as often those threads turn into spam immediately after that user is discovered to be blacklisted.

If you're thinking he did it just to harass you, that's not the case.

I did not assume anything. In fact, it would seem that you're assuming that I'm assuming. Yes, the blacklisting is done, but it's ramifications are far from over. I was not 'Spamming' caps - I was making a point about those who spam with caps. Those that was point was made in reference to were neither blacklisted nor had their topics locked.

I understand you guys don't like me. I don't take a whol lot of trash from people. But telling me to get over and offering no help is not what I requested - if you can't help or offer any suggestions, then don't post - it's not constructive - it's worthless drivel.

Nowhere in my posts did I say anything about 'issues' and it's frankly no concern of any of ours that you're having a bad day.

If you guys are going to bring the ToS hammer down on me - then at least be consistent and blacklist the people who violate not only the letter of the ToS, but the spirit of it.

Thanks to everyone else who did NOT put words into my mouth and take out their bad day on me - I will PM Stosh should I feel the urge to further contribute here at Bungie.net.

That doesn't seem very helpful

Chris nobody hates you, and I don't really think he was trying to say that moderators were abusing power. And if the part about not being "cool" was referring/related to the Twitch thing, then allow me to say that it was an "isolated incident." There are plenty of nice/cool people here who follow the rules just fine.

Spam - To post irrelevant or inappropriate messages to one or more usenet newsgroups, mailing lists, or other messaging system in deliberate or accidental violation of netiquette.

I suppose you're right. I feel like the guy who drives by with classical music blaring out the windows trying to make the point that behavior like this is ridiculous. But.... at least it's not obscenities and vulgar remarks coming out of my windows. By the letter of the ToS, I deserve punishment just as those who bump music full of obscenities, violance, and vulgarities.

Honestly, that's not my point. I wasn't going to argue over why I got blacklisted. I was merely putting my offense into its original context. Call it whatever you will. And feel free to blacklist me again if and when it happens again. I apologized for causing trouble, but I did not apologize for trying to make a point that was aimed at helping improve the quality of The Maw. If that makes me a Spammer, then I guess I am whatever you say I am.

I suppose the proper course of action would have been to report the primary instigators to a mod rather than take matters into my own inept hands.

But, forgive me if I mention this, the mods aren't usually who I would depend on to do something about this sort of thing. You guys have been doing a much better job over the past month or more at The Maw, and I do appreciate the job you do - when it's done.

I'm sorry - did I at any point say anything about rights? Thanks for your wise and all be it original input - I don't believe I've ever heard that before.

I didn't actually assume that Bungie.net would give me the right to be here and try to enrich the bastard HPC Community. I merely thought they'd have the decency to try.

And they do. But, I'm well aware that people make mistakes. So take your patronizing comments and save them for some other poor schmuck upon whom those witty words will not be wasted, they don't help me - I've heard it all before.

I'm sure. The thing is, you should have listened to them. If an error was made by a moderator you should message them to have it either corrected or refuted. If you absolutely must you can always message another moderator for their input in the matter. If that again fails you should just accept that your argument is lost and move on.

  • 08.01.2005 3:27 PM PDT

Sorry - I did that.

I actually bookmarked it so that I could repin it when the blacklist was up. I did it because it looks bad to have a blacklisted user's thread stuck, not least because new users would have no idea what the thread was about.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Wow the poor guy is trying to defend a decent thread he made and apologizong for a bad one. What do our mods do? They reply with a smart ass comment.

This thread was asking for help while stating an apology and u guys jumped on him like dogs. You should be ashamed of yourselfs.

To end the trouble, and start another "War Within a Breath" (I do belive that while that did it's job, it was ugly), I'd like to get this back on track.

Inspire is simply asking (albeit in a roundabout manner) to get the Stats Project restickied. He's worked quite a while, and quite hard on it, and many people would like to see it come to fruitition. It would be a shame to see it stop at this stage of development. And I have heard him say over at halomaps.co.uk that he's losing steam. It would be nice to get that thread stickied again.

I understand that. But what we do have is Privilages granted by Bungie.net and the other forum ninjas. Currently we're using our Privilage of feedback. ;)

EDIT: Oops, I was writing this when you mods posted. Sorry. Also, Eagle, Come on, they're mods, and they have to make relatively difficult decisions. Sometimes they may not seem right, but at least we get to use our Privilage of feedback to tell them that we're not really pleased. Kinda lay off it a little please. Thanks.

Yeah but they have good arguments that make the mods look like jerks.

I tend o agree with most of those arguments.
