EXTREME PREJUDICE

Take your time.

As a wave of Flood come out of the vents, run back to a safe distance and throw a grenade to soften them up. Finish the rest off with your AR. Keep your eyes open for any enemies carrying a pistol (2 head shot kill) or shotgun (OHK) as they are the most effective weapons. Search for more grenades. Rinse and repeat.

Plasma weapons are also good at making the combat forms drop their weapons.

Try to shoot the carrier forms first as the explosion will kill any nearby combat forms and will detonate grenades.

Due to the sheer amounts of enemies you will face throughout the level I always like to keep an AR/Shotgun on hand along with a Needler. Needlers are great for firing into a mess of Flood, especially when some of the explosive forms are around.

There are a couple flood (might be 3) that have rocket launchers. I would grab those and stock up for the portions of the level where you are trapped in rooms while waiting for Guilty Spark to clear security.

Ah, one of my favorite parts of the game....Library/Legendary.

Those who advocate patience are exactly right, patience is rewarded given the sheer volume of flood, and the abuse you will take if you are too aggressive.

My tips:

1-Make sure that you grab up a shotgun ASAP, and your main second weapon should be something that allows you to reach out and touch somebody from a distance, I typically prefer either the Magnum (though future rounds can be tougher to come by at times) or most often a Plasma Pistol. The advantage of the PP is that it helps stun combat forms and they drop their weapons and they are just all over the place, you will never run out of ammo.

2-Try to avoid shooting/exploding the carrier forms unless there is something else near them that will get taken out by its explosion. You get more bang for your buck that way.

3-Always remember that if you stay in one area too long you are going to have visitors from behind on a regular basis in the form of waves of carrier flood. They can ruin your day so keep your eye on your motion sensor when you have cleared your path forward for those bastages forming up behind you.

4-DO NOT HESITATE TO BACK UP AND LET THE FLOOD FOLLOW YOU. It will save your health and your bacon many times. In areas that the flood keep spawning over and over (up to 7 times), find a corner to let them come to you and take them out with the shotty, move forward to spawn them, reverse course to your hidey hole and take them out. Do this until they stop wave spawning. It gets a bit repetitive but it is the only way to survive the sheer numbers of flood. It is also the best way to keep your shotty pretty much full up as you will almost always encounter shotty bearing flood in certain waves. Be careful though, as you pile up the dead bodies and the grenades they drop, eventually a carrier floods explosion is going make quite a dramatic set of secondary explosions. That can ruin your day in a hurry!

Nice. Personally, The Library was one of the easiest on Legendary once you get a strategy going. Keyes was a huge pain though.

Yeah, that first part is a real pain. Just hold out and backpedal long enough to get your first shotgun. After you have that it's pretty easy. I like to use the needler for long range work on hard to reach combat forms. Otherwise the AR seems to work pretty well against the popcorn variety.

TEH FLUD SUXORS DEY ARNT IN TEH GAEM

Whore the magnum from a distance, shotgun for up close and for clearing large amounts of the infection forms. For small groups of infection forms, you can just let them hit you 2 or 3 at a time and then wait for your shields to recharge.

Finding magnum ammunition shouldn't be a problem as you'll only be using one or two rounds per combat form. Shotgun ammunition isn't a problem either because most of your kills will be long distance magnum shots.

The key to the level is continually backing up while watching out for the occasional hole in the floor.

"Hole in the floor" ? Ah yes, I feel you. The places where one can shoot out the glass and have some of the Flood fall in. Everyone's got great strategy points. Will add this one point - never drop the shotgun. Ever. Is your best friend, and even if it's on 2, don't let it go. Keep backing up and eventually you will get more shotgun. Great advice, everyone !

A couple more specific pointers:

1. In the room where you're stuck between two doors, you can avoid fighting altogether. Hide in the back right corner, facing the vents, and the Flood will never realize you're there unless you shoot. As soon as the door opens, and Sentinels spawn, throw a couple frags and help the Sentinels out a bit.

2. In every case you have Sentinels, Keep. Them. Alive. They distract Flood from you, and allow you to recharge health, run away, or even avoid fights. Kill rocket or plasma-wielding Flood first, then everything else.

Needler from a distance, Shotgun up close. Yes, I have completed most of it on Legendary with just a Needler (took at least an afternoon and evening); don't doubt its power.

The problem is a common one, especially since the Flood pour out of ever single opening and never end, so its pretty easy to die really quickly.

R.I.P. Halo 2

Use grenades on large groups.

Carry a Pistol and a Shotgun.

Engage with your Pistol as soon as you are in range. Don't run in with a shotgun, pick off as many as you can and use your shotgun when they get too close.

Use the reload glitch (quickly pressing XXY), it reloads your weapon in your backpack. It doesn't work with the shotgun though.

Reload your shotgun as often as possible. If it is possible for you to put a few shells into the magazine before they reach you, do it.

Most of these are really obvious, and it's really all I can help you with. Now it's up to you to hone these skills.

Flippin fantastic. This was my last stick point before getting a no-die run. Never actually just waited it out. Always hurled my grenades at the far (vent) wall. The Flood won't respond. Melee all infection forms, and thin out the combats with grenades. Makes for far better Sentinel survivability.
