How'd you find me?

Gah, I haven't written for so long. I started writing a comic, then I wrote the first chapter of another fan fiction, and then I was active in a group forum. Well, here it is, lucky part number 16! Sorry it's so short.

16. The Vacuum Is Our Friend

"Fighting Spirit, are those reactors ready to detonate yet?" Richard stood unsteadily on his feet. The Zealot that he'd been attacked by did a number on him. His skull hurt badly and dried blood lined the inside of his helmet, coating his brown hair. He was dizzy and used the bulkhead to keep him from smashing to the ground. Red was staring at him without her helmet on. She looked very concerned, a frown expressing all her emotions. She'd have to wait to get a chance to keep her helmet off, though; it was time for them to go into space.

"Yes," Fighting Spirit responded, his voice echoing through Richard's helmet. "We've got five minutes to get off this ship."

"That's just the amount of time we need," Ralph stated coolly. He sauntered over to the air lock and turned to face the others. "Everyone sealed up and EVA ready?"

There was a quick group nod and the sound of armors sealing up to keep their user alive in the vacuum.

"Should I open up the hatch?" Fighting Spirit asked simply.

"No, I got it," Ralph said, as he ripped open the airlock with his bare hands, sending them all into the vacuum.

*****

A few yards away from the ship's hull, War Dog was floating with Finn and the engineer inside the pelican he currently inhabited. Finn was looking out the view port for any hint of Stiletto Squad. It wasn't necessary, though; War Dog was tracking the beacon made by their neural uplinks using his radar. Suddenly, the beacons all moved quickly in the same direction and then slowed down, almost stopping completely. War Dog knew that they had just been sucked into space.

"Alright, Finn, it's time we pick up the rest of your squad."

*****

Richard drifted through space silent as a ghost. Red was floating next to him. At one point, she had drifted closer to him than the rest of Stiletto; he wasn't sure if it was intentional or not. Whichever it was, there hands were locked together as they drifted a bit farther from their fellow squad mates.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Richard looked at Red's helmet. They had both depolarized their visors so he could see every detail of her face. Richard stared into her emerald eyes for a while, losing himself in them.

"You mean Reach?" Richard looked down at the planet below them. Though much of it was obscured by orbital defense platforms and Covenant ships, he could make out parts of the surface. And it was beautiful, despite the planet's harsh surface. The clear blue sky, the sparkling seas, it was like a masterpiece created by the greatest artist who ever lived. Richard stared down at the planet for a while, then looked back up at Red and smiled. "It is," he said, smiling and holding her hand tighter.

"Well, hello, Lieutenant Martin, Private O'Harisson," War Dog's pelican drifted over to the two soldiers while simultaneously opening up the back for Red and Richard to enter. "Glad to see that you're alive."

Richard looked at Red for a second. Your last name is O'Harisson? Was all he could think. He realized that even after Red started being open with him he still hadn't learned her name. I'll ask her later, he decided as he pulled himself into the pelican and polarized his visor. He sat down next to Cowboy on the left side of the pelican. Red sat down in the seat next to him. The pelican closed and pressurized, sealing in the oxygen. All of Stiletto took off their helmets.

Suddenly, Finn burst from the cockpit, dashing into the pelican's tray.

"You're all alive!" Finn cried out happily. Everyone stood up to greet Finn.

"Yes, Finn. We're all alive. Where'd the engineer go? And what happened to your armor?" Richard looked at Finn curiously. He was only wearing his black under suit instead of full SPI. Finn looked at Richard and smiled at the question.

"The engineers doing something to it. He's adding shielding, I think. As it turns out, he grabbed an elite's shield generator. And he's upgrading the camo panels. He's pretty smart for an octopus."

"Good," Richard said, taking a glance into the cockpit, "When will he finish-?'

As if on queue, the engineer drifted out of the cockpit. Its many cilia were holding the SPI armor just off the ground, showing every detail of it. Grafted on at the waist was a Covenant Personal Shield Generator. It was deactivated. Finn quickly put on his modified armor.

"This is amazing," Finn declared, securing the helmet onto his head. The shield generator hummed to life, and a blow glow quickly spread around Finn before disappearing, practically unseen on his armor. Finn then activated the camo. He was nearly invisible, only leaving a shimmering outline where he stood. "This is more than just amazing. It's spectacular."

Richard studied Finn's armor carefully. He noticed the camo panels looked different somehow, changed. Then he realized that all of them were now doubling as solar panels to power the additions to the armor. That engineer was smart. ONI would be glad that they had grabbed it.

Richard decided to walk into the cockpit. It was empty since the engineer had left, so he might as well sit in the pilot's chair and think alone. As soon as he sat down, however, Red entered through the door and sat in the co-pilot chair. She smiled at Richard warmly.

"You do know we're breaking protocol with this 'romance'?" Richard just had to speak up. He was always following protocol. If anyone ever broke it, he would give them a hard time. Now, however, it was him breaking protocol. How should he react to that?

"Technically, we're breaking UNSC protocol. But we work for ONI now. We're allowed to have this 'romance.' " Red was looking at Richard amused. He would never be able to tell what she was thinking.

"How are you so sure about that?" Richard asked, looking at Red curiously. He noticed she had a mischievous grin on her face.

"I checked the protocol. It said it was perfectly okay for us to do something like..." Red suddenly leaned forward and embraced Richard tightly. They began to kiss. Luckily the cockpit door was sealed, or else the rest of Stiletto would have seen what they were doing.

Gently, Red pulled herself away from Richard and put her hands on her lap. She was still grinning, but now Richard shared the look on her face. "...something like that."

17. A Little R&R

Stiletto Squad exited the pelican hurriedly. Richard and Red were the last ones to leave. They had been talking in the cockpit and were not too thrilled with the thought of ending their conversation so quickly. However, there was time for talking later, they were being sent to the bridge to see the captain. Fighting Spirit immediately downloaded himself into the ship's mainframe and began conversing with the other smart A.I.s that ran the Marauder. War Dog also re-entered the ship's data center instead of staying in the pelican. He'd be more useful inside than outside of the ship.

When they reached the bridge, Captain Riley informed them that they had two hours before being deployed again. He also suggested they get some rest. Everyone was then sent off to the barracks. Everyone except Finn. He, the engineer, and Fighting Spirit had a job to do.

*****
Richard surveyed his private quarters. Though he preferred the barracks, he had one because he was Stiletto's commanding officer. There was a large bed at one side of the room and a desk at the other. Under the bed was storage space for anything he wanted to keep close to him. The desk was bare except for a lamp and some papers. Richard checked them and discovered they were the list of ONI protocols. Flipping through them, he found that Red had not been making things up and they were allowed to have romantic relations. Richard's heart soared with the news. He and Red could be together. Suddenly, an overriding thought interrupted his jubilations: Rest. Richard realized that he was dog-tired and that he needed sleep, or at least the comfort of a mattress beneath his head. Yawning, Richard stripped to his undergarments and lay down in his new comfortable rest. Soon, sleep overtook him, and he began to snore loudly.

*****

The engineer floated through the lab, disassembling every piece of technology and then reassembling them with his many cilia. Finn studied the strange creature. He realized that he was fond of it, sort of like a boy is fond of a dog. Then that's one strange dog and I'm one strange boy. Finn laughed inwardly. What had being a Spartan done to him? It had driven him crazy.

"Petty Officer?" Finn turned his attention back to the ensign that had brought him and the engineer into the lab. She was young, not much older than Finn. Her long back hair was tied into a bun and she wore thin frame glasses on her face. Finn wondered why ONI would employ someone so young and inexperienced. She was probably the daughter of an important officer or had special traits that made her ONI material. Most likely both.

"Yes?" Finn turned back to her quickly. The engineer, sensing the sudden movement, also turned his to investigate the cause of the new noise.

"Captain Riley's orders are for you to assist the engineer in any way possible. Get in some training and exercise when needed, but spend most of your time down here. Fighting Spirit will also monitor the engineer with you and be your direct link to the bridge. Remember that you're still in Stiletto Squad so try to keep yourself combat ready." The ensign spoke fast yet clearly and left almost immediately after finishing her sentence. Finn listened to her shoes clack against the metal floor of the Marauder. He decided to just ignore the emotions he was feeling right then. He had work to do.

*****

Ralph polished the hilt to the strange alien sword he had taken from the zealot. When Red had killed it, he had grabbed the powerful weapon without the rest of Stiletto noticing. Looking at the elite blade now, he decided he had made the right choice. The hilt was balanced, but had enough weight to it that he could use it as bludgeon in desperate scenarios. He had not yet activated the blade for fear of the trophy being confiscated. He tucked the sword into the small pouch he kept filled with personal belongings. He was holding on to his prize.

*****

Red knocked on Richard's door. She had been wandering the ship before because there was nothing for her to do. That's when she decided to visit Richard. She enjoyed his company, and there was something about him that made her feel good. His quarters were a good a place as anywhere to go.

Red waited impatiently for Richard to open the door, tapping her foot in annoyance. Finally, after a far too long five seconds, Richard opened the door. He wore basically the same thing as Red and everyone else, military fatigues made out of a simple material. He looked tired, as if he had just woken up. The truth was he did just wake up. Red had interrupted his sleep.

Richard greeted Red warmly. "Hey," he said casually, smiling. "What brings you here?'

Red smiled at Richard. He had always been kind to her, even when she was not kind to him.

"Can I come in?" Richard nodded and gestured for Red to enter his quarters. She stepped into the medium sized room and sat down on the bed. Richard sat down next to her.

"So," Richard began, looking at Red's eyes, "any reason you popped by?"

"I thought we could continue are conversation," Red stated plainly, brushing a lock of hair behind her ear.

"Oh, that conversation," Richard said, grinning dumbly, "So when were you going to tell me your name was Scarlet? I think it's better than Red, to tell you the truth-"

"You promised not to talk about my name." Richard was getting on Red's nerves. He had promised not to mention her first name. Ever.

"Sorry. But Scarlet? I have to say, given your nickname, that's hilarious." Richard was smiling from ear to ear. He wasn't always a shy pacifist.

"I can't tell you anything without you making a joke about it, can I?" Red tried frowning, but her grin was not concealable. Her white teeth shined. Richard knew that he was in love with her. Everything about her was perfect.

Red began saying something else, but Richard stopped her. He looked into her emerald eyes. They brought their lips close to each other's. They were about to kiss when the ship's intercom made them stop.

"Stiletto Squad, report to the bridge immediately for briefing." Richard cursed the voice's timing. He looked at Red. She wore the same look as his, one that said "What can we do?" They sat there for a few seconds longer before Red broke eye contact and stood up. As she left the room, she turned back around.

"We'll get back to this later." With that, Red left the room.
