Alright, I am going to break down every element of the game, and assign a price tag to it. Enjoy. This will be somewhat biased.

Campaign
ODST has a solid campaign overall. The idea of searching New Mombasa for clues as to the fate of your fellow soldiers is a new an innovative idea for Halo and adds more of a mysterious feel. The concept of being an ODST makes the player feel as though they have to be stealthy and eliminate enemies from afar, rather than blindly rushing. The score is amazing, and really fits the pace of the game nicely. Also, it doesn't become so distracting so that it would draw attention away from the story. The missions are fun the first couple times and the re-playability is medium. This is due to the achievements making players want to come back for more campaign fun. All in all, a solid campaign with average replayability.
Price - $20

Firefight
Firefight is a game mode that is all new to Halo. Players must fight wave after wave of advancing Covenant, some weak, and some with powerful armament. Medals and scoring add a competitive edge and an incentive to perform well. Achievements are intertwined with Firefight to make players come back for more. Replayability is high and friends can enjoy killing Covenant again and again on a multitude of maps. Although matchmaking isn't present, one can't help but enjoy the comfort of his/her own friends. The wave/round/set system combined with skulls gives the player initiative and a formidable challenge. Teamwork and communication are required to succeed in Firefight. Overall, Firefight is very fun and is much more re-playable than the campaign. Also, one can't help but smile when they cap 7 grunts and get a Killimanjaro.
Price - $20

Halo 3 Multiplayer Disc
The Mythic Disc includes 3 new maps (Heretic, Longshore and Citadel). Assigning a price tag to these maps are easy, as Microsoft already has, $10. However, in addition to the maps, you get the entire Halo 3 experience sans the campaign. So it's like you are getting 2 games for the price of 1. The polished new look of the Multiplayer disc is worth noting too. Colors are darker and much sharper. Overall, the Multiplayer disc offers 3 maps, a polished new look and the Halo 3 Multiplayer experience.
Price - $15

Halo: Reach Beta Invitation
In addition to the aforementioned components of Halo 3 ODST, is an invitation to participate in the Halo Reach Beta. You get to test a new game months before it's official release. You are basically getting a few weeks of an incredible and new Halo experience for free. However, it is worth something. After all, playing a game months before it is released is a pretty sweet deal.
Price - $10

Total - $65

So as you can see I have justified $65 worth of ODST. Since ODST sells for $59.99 plus tax, I have hit the nail on the head. ODST is a great game, and before you accuse it of being overpriced or a waste of money, think about all you are getting for $60.

It really is worth every penny. They very well could have charged more and I wouldn't consider it outrageous.

I'll pretend like this topic hasn't been beaten to death.

Of COURSE ODST has the content to warrant a $60 price, given the assumption that Halo 3 deserved one as well.

Halo 3 included: Campaign, Multiplayer, Forge, Theater, Custom Games

ODST included: Campaign, Firefight, Multiplayer, Forge, Theater, Custom Games, Beta invitation, maps.

That part can be disputed, but the argument is weak. The REAL question is whether ODST is worth that much to someone who has ALREADY purchased Halo 3 and all DLC, reducing the net gain to:

Firefight, ODST campaign, beta invitation.

^THAT is more questionable. Add in the fact that it's just a multiplayer beta (isn't that just a fancy word for demo?) which by all reasoning should be free anyway, and you've got a bit of a dilemma. I solved the problem by renting a few times, achieving all the achievements, and returning. Cost me a grand total of $15.

Seriously, people just got spoiled by the ridiculous wealth of features Halo 3 has. If Halo 3 hadn't happened, I would gladly (and quite possibly, still would have) payed $100 for ODST with no additional features. I LOVED ODST so freaking much... still haven't beaten it on Legendary, though... my friends are noobs. They're still playing MW2 and are going to shell out $15 for the map pack.

Seriously, all the folks who whined about ODST's cost are the same ones forking out loads of cash for 3 new maps and 2 old ones. What morons. ODST is DEFINITELY worth the $60.

I'd certainly like to add to that, that ODST also has Theatre mode for Firefight and its campaign, which are obviously not accessible from Halo 3, and new player models, emblems, and service tags. The little things count too... in my opinion, that's just jam-packing it with value!

it is definatly worth my money i got it on release for around 40-45$ and i had only bought one map pack so its alot of content for the price.

The Reach Beta invitation isn't really an invitation if you have to pay for it. Moreover, that's not a permanent part of the game. It's just supposed to be something you are invited too which just comes with the disc.

Fire fight is a matchmaking-less, laggy ripoff from the campaign. You cannot play four players on one Xbox with it, and spawns become broken easily if a Brute or two make it into your base.

All in all, I don't think that an add on can, or will, ever be worth $60. I'm glad I bought it where I did and received a $20 gift card with my purchase. Essentially, I got it for $40. That is a much more reasonable price for this game.

I could have eaten a box of Alphabits and crapped out more logical proof than that...

I bought the $100 Gamestop pack with the controller. I played the campaign almost straight through, played a bunch of Firefight, and played a bunch on the new maps. I would have easily paid more than $60 for just the game or more than $100 for the controller bundle.

  • 03.25.2010 11:11 AM PDT

The 100$ pack

Controllers were 60$ canadian when ODST came out anyways.. nevermind a special edition one.
soo..

Controller-70$ value
Game-50$ value
halo 3 maps-20$ value
Sergeant johnson-3$ value

Total value:143$ canadian.
Total paid: 105$ canadian./

Good deal eh?

hell.. I'd have paid at least 20$ if I got the maps any other way.

I hope you are trolling or joking...

$10 for a public test of a game which more helps Bungie than us and we are supposed to pay for that?
$10 for an armor...?
$5 for letters and numbers next to your name...? Really?
This game is $25 overpriced... $40 is good enough. It's just Halo 3 with tweaked graphics, poorly network coded Firefight and other flaws. $60 is just too much.

Having all the maps would be a bonus- if any of the playlists I want to play used them.

Yeah, ODST was well worth what I paid especially when you basically get another Halo 3 disk, an invitation to the Halo Reach Beta, the ODST campaign, and firefight.

I didn't think it needed any justification after so long, especially after everyone has already bought it. Haha!

I got mine for around $17 - new, from some guys at Lot 10 in KL (Malaysia) - these guys 'pass the savings onto you'.
Only got it once Budgie started forcing playlists to need the last map pack (yet only played one map off the set).

They even say that they can get a set of Reach disks 2 weks before anyone else ... and for about the same price.

I bought the version with the controller as I was down a controller. Thought that was even better value than the standard version.
