"This is the definitive Halo made by the people who created Halo."

Hello everyone! This is a VERY common misconception and I'm getting SICK and TIRED of it, so I thought that I'd make a very simple and straight-forward thread to clear some things up... To start off, take a look at the following image:

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/9820/halo3odst.png

Notice how I outlined the "3" in "Halo 3: ODST"? If not, then you might want to get your eyes checked. What this means is that Halo 3: ODST is an EXPANSION PACK to Halo 3. Don't know want an expansion pack is? Take a look at the following Wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_pack

Being an expansion pack to Halo 3, it uses the SAME GAME ENGINE as Halo 3. Don't know what an game engine is? Take a look at the following Wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_engine

The point that I'm trying to get across is that Bungie NEVER intended for Halo 3: ODST to be a full retail release like Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 3, or Halo: Reach. Some people were a little angry that it cost $60, as was I, but for the last time, IT WAS NOT BUNGIE'S FAULT!! They had NO control over the price whatsoever. That was in control of the game's publisher - Microsoft. If you see ANYONE ELSE that makes this common misconception, PLEASE link them to this thread. Someone has to put an end to this nasty rumor.

Please post your thoughts and/or opinions. And remember... KEEP IT CLEAN!! ;)

ODST was always a campaign expansion (with Firefight as an extra) to Halo 3, packaged with a second disc containing all of the Halo 3 DLC maps. It was developed in 1 year with small team. It did very well, but was still a side story to the main series.

Reach, on the other had, has been in development since shortly after the release of Halo 3, and has a huge team working on it. It is exponentially larger than ODST was - it is not a side story.

Yeah, most of us already knew this...

Look down to for immediate destruction.

So...yes it was an expansion, whoever said an expansion can't be good?? the only thing I think they missed is having matchmaking in firefight but even with that I think the game was worth my $60 because the campaign was very good.

  • 03.29.2010 6:25 PM PDT

Even bungie knows it's an expansion, just a big one.

  • 03.29.2010 6:37 PM PDT

Thanks Isaac Newton but i think most people know it's an expansion.

Halo 3: ODST is an expansion to Halo 3. We know this.

I'm aware that most of you already know this, but there are still few people that don't. For eample, take a look at this thread that was just created today:

No problem! I'm afraid that people that don't realize this will think that Halo: Reach is just another expansion pack like Halo 3: ODST.

Anyone who claims the AR takes skill ought to shoot himself in the head. Preferably with the AR because they'll most likely miss with any other weapon.

This thread is totally unnecessary, and I'm predicting that it will soon be locked. Everyone should know this, and if anyone doesn't know this, whenever they complain about ODST you can throw this back in their face. If you dislike those who complain, do not vent on these forums.

Being an expansion pack to Halo 3, it uses the SAME GAME ENGINE as Halo 3.

Just going to point out that just because something runs on the same engine as something else, it doesn't disqualify it from being a full game.

The problem is that Bungie developed ODST as an expansion, stated that it wouldn't be a full price title, and all that jazz. And then Microsoft come in and suddenly say "Uh, no, it's $60 nao plzkthnxbai", and made poor attempts to justify it. Causing many people to think that ODST is nothing more than a money grab.

I enjoyed ODST for what it was, but even i'd struggle to justify a full price tag. Especially considering I had already bought all of the DLC prior to ODSTs release. Just look at Reach, would you really put ODST on the same level as that? I think not.

Making these threads is pointless, you'll always have people who are disgruntled about ODSTs price tag. Posting a thread that condescends the reader won't help either.

Can't we just agree that ODST was Halo 3's after-birth and leave it at that?

Sub-par game through and through if you ask me, no matter if you call it an expansion or stand-alone title.

ODST is like whiskey. It's an extremely acquired taste.

Most people could already tell it was an expansion.

Some of the people who complain, not all, state that this was a full game.

Oh, bum- diddly!

I wouldn't necessarily call it an expansion pack. All of the expansions that i've seen in the past require the original copy of the game in order to play it. I've never played Halo 3 in my life, only ODST. And both the campaign and multiplayer work just fine.

You're right, a small number of people insist on calling it a full game. I think the majority of us, no matter how much we like the game, realize that the game is an expansion. I think it's a good game for what it has, but I still wouldn't call it a full game regardless.

I thought that was the OP sarcasm ... the basis was that 'expansion' == 'using same engine', and in the case of Reach is is the same engine + extensive reworking.

To the OP:
Your comment re: "They had NO control over the price whatsoever. That was in control of the game's publisher - Microsoft" ... do you have a link to either Bungie or Microsoft confirming this?
Its actually against the law for a publisher to dictate the price of a product - strange but true. Amazon & Google run into the same issue acting in the role of publishers of online books.
So would love to see a link supporting this :)
