Subject: How did you react when you first saw The Flood?

I remember the moment like it was yesterday. I was 7 and my brother was 12 and this was the first video game either of us had ever played. It was 9:30pm and our parents were out with some of their friends. We first appear in the swamp and we believe this is just a routine run and gun misson. We clear a way to the base and as we see monsters flashing around in the trees we begin to get scared. We enter the room and when the flood first appeared i just froze with fear. And when we got to the elevator where there was covenant blood smeared all over the walls and was scared -blam!-less. And he said to me "Thomas do you want to play the next mission" i replied "im so scared right now i dont even know whats going on" needless to say we didnt play halo the next day and follow our one mission a day routine. And i remember our first encounter with the carrier forms they quickly earned the nickname of. "Puffy poops",because they exploded like diarea and looked like -blam!-. I miss that type of feeling in video in video games. The only thing that has ever come close is the berserker in gears of war. And when you see the wretches tearing at the grill of your prison cell at the very beginning of gears but thats a different story. Needless to say i love both gears and halo so don't judge me.

I -blam!- myself when i saw them

Although the choices for this poll are all very good choices, I assume I was pretty close to pissing my pants when I first saw the Flood in 343 Guilty Spark, so I just voted for that.

To be more specific, when I first saw this "strange creature" running around in the jungle when I first played 343 Guilty Spark, I simply thought it was an Elite or something. But, the second time I saw one of the "strange creatures", I realized that was no Elite. That had to be something else. Something I never experienced so far in the campaign...

So, I simply kept on wiping out the Covenant forces (with my older brother of course, as this was the first playthrough of Halo: CE for him and I), and right when it started getting pretty damn creepy down in the Forerunner structure that you must traverse, we watched the clip of the Flood. That little clip was possibly one of the creepiest, most outrageous clips I've ever seen in a video game (especially during 2001). That one clip is what made me want to take an hour break of Halo, as I was in shock, and I was pretty much scared -blam!-less to continue.

But, my older brother said, "We gotta keep playing, bro." So, we obviously kept playing... 343 Guilty Spark was possibly one of the most scariest (possibly the most) scariest Halo missions I've ever played in my life. It was also one of the most exhilarating Halo missions I've ever played in my life.

I hope you all liked my story of when I first experienced the Flood.

And to think, I was 6 when I first played the game on November 15, 2001. Although crying did not ensue for me, there were many moments on various missions in which I was very close to pissing my pants or screaming my mouth off.

I thought they were zombies. I was a little freaked out.
And then I spent about two hours trying to find my way out of the level. I memorized it now, though. ;D

What a waste....

So I was playing Halo 2 when a zombies started jumping out from everywhere. OH -blam!- WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!?

  • 08.08.2010 5:08 PM PDT

Totally craped my pants, i remember seeing the video, and just thinking WTF?! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET OUT OFF HERE!, really this is the only time a game has scared me, no game has ever even been close to making me feel what Halo:Combat Evolved made me feel, this is off topic, but i also remember the feeling off when you first land in halo and get out of the scape pod, thtas why Halo:Combat Evolved is just the best game for me.

"GAH! THE DEVIL!"

Seriously though, I refused to play levels with flood in them for a long time.

I was 9 years old. When I was watching the film from Jenkins POV, i became scared. I was literally shaking. Then, when the infection forms came out. I literally screamed in fright, but kept a cool head and blew those suckers up. It was quite an experience...

What freaked me out was when they would always seem to come back up. So for a while I pumped a clip into a downed flood at every passing.

I screamed because I was young, didn't play those levels without a friend!

  • 08.11.2010 10:03 PM PDT

I was backing off and firing wildly, but I was also physically backing away from my TV too. Pretty sure I yelped when the first combat form jumped and slashed at me. After I killed them I had to pause and calm down...

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

I was like ten years old at the time, so I freaked out tremendously. I also don't think I had a shotgun... plus I got lost multiple times.

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

It was sort of a, "Has this sci-fi game just turned into a survival horror game?"

I was scared at first but as the wave of emotion of the Flood attack washed over me something inside turned cold and although I had been effectively killing Covenant for a long time, a new steel was forged within me...I knew that to get out alive I had to kill every last one of these S.O.B's. I did it, stole the index from the library and blew up the ring world known as Halo, but I knew this wasn't the end...it was only just beginning.
you should write a book, despite how terrified I was I had flashbacks to those zombie things in the legend of Zelda ocarina of time and remembered the only way to win is to fight, as there is no room for emotion when fighting the undead....
