Wait what?!

-wasted

From the game we know he is a shocked trauma case from something that probably happened at New Jerusalem. In the human war machine he is a Lance Corporal, This seems pretty green, as it is compatible with PFC but as Buck mentioned in the vidoc,

"Not exactly green; no ODST is."

As from Bungie's recent game release, ODST, it shows the rookie having higher than normal survival skills than other ODSTS in his squad. Such examples are, Mickey, Dutch, Romeo, and Buck. All of these characters required the help of another squadmate. It is highly likely he learned to be a "lone wolf" by what happened on New Jerusalem. Only one person in the game matched the Rookie's survivability, Dare.

Shown from the game, the rookie seems to have an expert's understanding of weapons, human or otherwise. It also shows the Rookie giving Romeo a stimpak after his lung was punctured by a Jiralhanae Chieftain's gravity hammer. Another form of the rookie's medical skills is the ability to use civilian med packs (optican) accurately, whereas the squad is never seen using optican for Romeo.

Note: it maybe because of the seriousness of the wound Romeo has medigel would prove useless. A stimpak is a minor healing injection so it may have only lessened the pain Romeo was feeling. Whereas Biofoam being superior to the stimpak, making Dutch the official medic of the squad.

I haven't figured out what exactly the Rookie is. However, he appears to be a "jack of all trades" a "keeper of none" so to speak.

I'm pretty sure it was Buck who healed Romeo after he had his lung punctured.

Buck used bio-foam on Romeo to keep him alive for a few more hours; Rookie gave him some meds on the Phantom at the end of the game.

I don't even think Bungie read that much into the Rookie's character. His only purpose is to be the character that guides the player through the story without having much (any) impact on it.

I completely forgot about that scene on the Phantom.

I think you underestimate Bungie. They've always been very concerned about the quality of the story in their games. I don't see why ODST would be an exception to that.

Rookie's actions that have an effect on the story:

1) Helps Dare fight her way to Virgil (Buck was on his way to help her, so even if the Rookie didn't show up, they still would've rescued Virgil)

2) Applys medical treatment to Romeo (which could've been done by any of the other ODSTs on the ship)

3) Kills corrupt police officer (who dies anyway).

Rookie's character has no personality, no voice, no impact on the story, and it's very likely that we'll never see him (well, his armor) ever again. Why would Bungie waste time developing a backstory for such a character?

Oh, bum- diddly!

I think The Rookie is just a character made to play the main part. We'll never see him again. Going into depth on him is like what English Teachers do about books, they make you 'read between the lines to find out why the author did this'- when the author probably didn't realise they were doing it themselves, they were just writing a story.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

Wow dude, you have to play the game yourself. You got a few of your facts wrong, for instance: Buck gives the Biofoam to Romeo, not the Rookie. And the skills you noted in terms of weapons, don't really exist for the character. That is just the player. Plot-wise, the Rookie survived New Mombasa with just an SMG and a Pistol. And mostly from sneaking and hiding.
