Okay guys, enough is enough.
We see them every time we open the forum. They fade quickly into obscurity, with if they're lucky, a single reply. There're the "HELP!!!!!!!" "Where" "Why?" or any other single word posted topic questions that eat up front page space and make me have to scroll down just a little further to find what I'm looking for.
On a lark, I went into some of these “non-named” posts today just to see what they wanted. The questions ranged from thought provoking to asinine to…well, people who just wanted to see their names on the forum.
To those of you who are actually seeking help with a problem I urge you: spend a second or two thinking about what it is you’re asking for help with and condense it. The topic sentence is as important to your thread as a title is to any other work. If Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” had been called “That play where stuff happens” he’d have changed vocations quick (actually, now I think about it…it kind of was…bad example but you get the point.).
If we, the readers, don’t know what you want help with we’re not likely to even bother opening your thread (I don’t; except today). You’ll be lucky to get a handful of responses to your post and of those maybe one will be useful.
In my (as yet limited) experience on this forum I have found that most people are genuinely interested in what each other has to say and want to help you with your questions.
If you’re asking about a problem starting Halo from disc, well, there’s your topic “Need help running Halo on my PC”. If you’re wondering where to get the latest mod map tell us that you’re “Looking for the latest Mod Maps”. A promo vid for H2CE? “Are there any vids of H2CE out yet?”
That wasn’t so hard, was it?
Take a couple of seconds to think about your topic sentence please. In the end, you’ll get more responses (and many more responses that are helpful).
…End of rant
