I think it's a good weapon. I prefer plasma weapons on shields, but the SMG isn't bad unless tilt is on. I usually save it for drones though and sometimes chieftains. Also, it takes a lot of skill for an automatic weapon. It also looks and sounds cool.

It has the recoil of a beast! utterly brutal. Useful at times? Yes. Fun to use? Yes. Still, it can be difficult to really get the hang of. I still don't think I've really mastered it at all.

Spartan I Project - Community Game Nights Team Leader

Wait people are using something other than the plasma pistol/ magnum combo?

On a serious note. I find the SSMG useless in most situations. I usually use the Plasma Pistol / magnum combo, or heavy weapons (rockets, lazer) if they are available.

The best event in the Halo series was the grunt rebellion!

Listen to some of this on, this site.

I like to use it sometimes, but I'd prefer the magnum.

I don't see the point of having a scope on a gun that flies upwards everytime you shoot something with it.

Spartans are from Venus and Elites are from Uranus

I thought it was only really good for killing drones.

Your best killing grunts with the pistol.

For brutes it's best to take their shields out with a plasma rifle or plasma pistol then following it up with a shot from the pistol.

Pretty much anything is good for shooting hunters in the back, although the shotgun is really good. The Rocket and spartan laster make killing hunters effortless.

Engineers are most easily killed with plasma rifles and plasma pistols, take out their shields and they'll self destruct on their own. And pretty much anything is good against jackals so long as you get past their shields. The pistols really good since you can shoot the gap, they'll move their shield out of the way and then you can get off a head shot. The carbine is better than the pistol at ever role, but it's harder to maintain one most of the time, especially fire fight since carbine ammo is generally pretty scarce.

That leaves Drones. Most drones don't have shields and most that do don't have heavy shielding like Brutes and Engineers so it's best to use the smg since bullets do more damage against unshielded enemies. While the pistol and carbine can more often kill drones faster ammo is less plentiful, it's significantly harder to headshot drones so you more often waste alot of shots and you just can't shoot as much so it's better to use a fully automatic weapon like the smg and assault rifle to kill drones and since the assault rifle isn't in firefight the smg is pretty much your only choice.

So basically drones are the only reason the silenced smg isn't completely useless. It also explains why drones are so annoying because in order to effectively, efficiently and quickly kill drones you need a weapon thats not too effective or efficient against the rest of the enemies in the game.
