I was watching this tv show. in the show these two guys are piloting a ship in space with this chick who sounds exactly and i MEAN exactly like cortana. This girl is the smartest person on the ship. offereng maps and other stuff. they come across a planet that looks like a ring. (any of this ringin a bell)
And when they observe the ring they find out that it is a library of an ancient peoples lost time these worm like creatures start attacking them and they set off the ship and blast off in a life pod. the ships explosion destroys the ring.

Verrrrrryyy familiar.

There's also a book called "Ringworld." I've never read it, but the front cover has a picture of a near exact replica of the halo ring on it, and the back cover said some stuff about alien fighting and such

'Ringworld' was the first time a ringworld was used in sci-fi.

My dad actually read ringworld and when I was talking to him about the original Halo, before it even came out, he said that it sounded kinda like that book.
