It surrounds you in sound completely. So you will hear sounds coming from behind in the game, and it will seem like they actually are behind you. 5.1 means 5 speakers and bass, 2.1 means 2 speakers and bass.

Don't get a 1.1 surround sound system. People say they're terrible. It's one speaker unit, but with many actual speakers inside. They're supposed to project the sound to make it like surround sound, but it doesn't work well.

I'm almost ready for Halo 2.... Got my 84" (that's right - 84 inches of pure screen goodness) projector all ready to go, with composite video connection, and I'm getting a 5.1 surround sound system soon.

:D

I don't mean to be mean, but so you don't embarrass yourself--DLPs come in 43" and 46"--there's nothing in between. I hope you got some component cables for it.

Dude, I hope you meant COMPONENT connection. If you're using composite you're not getting but a fraction of the detail Bungie intended and muted colors besides. If it's component there will be 5 cables--3 vid and 2 audio.

7.1 isnt supported by anything, so you have 2 coppycat speakers.

5.1vs 2.1 5.1 is 5 speakers and one sub. you have center, left right, then you can set the other two to SIDE right/left or REAR right/left. so that sound on the right side OFF screen come out of JUST the speaker to the right of you. then once its closer it mixes between the right side and the normal right. and yah, you get the idea

thats how i have my 5.1 set up. left side, right side. then a front left front right and center. but yah. thats pretty much it. it is great. i had to go back and replay each game i had prior to the system to experience it in SURROUND SOUND GREATNESS

oh, and i almost forgot, you need to purchase the advanced av kit or whatever for the xbox. and get an optical wire to go from the advanced av kit to the dolby digital, or else you CANNOT experience TRUE dolby digital surround sound.

the kit also enables you to use S video rather than the rca standardish.
http://www.xbox.com/en-us/hardware/advancedavpack.htm
there are also other variations of it that support hdtv and whatnot. if your really unsure ask the retailer at the place you get the receiver, they should be able to help you.
