Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
SMG, unless you have Carbine or any other full auto weapon (AR included), is a must have against drones (and the Carbine is definitely preferable). Automag is useless against them. As for against other enemies, it's useful for taking out brutes shields so you can follow up for the headshot.
It can also be useful against the 2 hunters on the Tayari Plaza level should you choose to fight them on Legendary, although it has minimal effect unless you can stay near the 2 health packs near the doors you enter the area where you battle the hunters from, and then stay on the top level near the edge (the hunters are very stupid here and try to melee you from the other side of the wall and lower down on the street). In fact, anything but headshot weapons is useful against them, SMG, Shotgun, any and all grenades, AR, and the plasma turret from the previous area are all useful weapons and will eventually enable you to kill both those hunters.
Automag, useful against grunts, jackals (including the shielded jackals - one shot to stun them followed by a quick headshot is arguably the most efficient way to kill these, unless you grenade them, but then i'd only use grenades if there was a small group of them), and (provided you can actually hit them) unshielded brutes, however, in my experience, unshielded brutes typically berserk and become difficult to headshot with automag.
My favourite weapons, at least on Legendary difficulty campaign, are the Carbine and the Beam Rifle, as they're both as least moderately common (especially the Carbine) and pretty much always useful. Though, obviously try to avoid engaging hunters unless you have plenty (at least 10) grenades and good aim with the grenades. The carbine is excellent for taking out grunts, brutes (although it takes several shots due to their shields), jackals and drones. Beam Rifle, as always, is best to use against brutes, 2 shots minimum though in my experience, even if I get a headshot 1st shot. Unless of course you're lucky enough to be able to line up 2 or more grunts, then go ahead, but carbine is better against grunts due to the more readily available ammo.
(I voted Automag out of the 2 weapons in the poll)
