The silenced SMG is a pretty good all-round weapon, good for Brutes, Grunts, Jackals, Hunters, etc. The pistol, however, is only good for unshielded enemies.

I voted SMG, btw.

well if our trying to get headshots then the automag is definetly better but you cant just kill a brute with an automag unless you use half your amo
i rather keep an automag than a silenced SMG though
so i vote automag

Automag wand the plasma pistol is my prefered combination. Plasma pistol to get rid of the brute's shields then one pop to the head with the automag. Conserves ammo, and there's always more plasma pistols to replace. This is probably what is getting me through Legendary.

good strategy. isn't that called the "noob combo," though?

Yes, and it gives you a double score multiplier as well (because you get two style kill medals). Kind of ironic though, because using it in ODST and Halo 3 matchmaking requires skill.

And I'd rather be conservative too. I actually barely ever use the plasma pistol in multiplayer, only in campaign.

"Thaddaeus was here."

I'd have to go with the Automag.

I love the damn thing too much...

Using the Halo 3 ODST Pistol makes me feel badass. I vote Automag.

Thinking with Portals since '07

Battlefield 3 sucks.

automag is the perfect ODST weapon.

I prefer the automag, but it takes 2 1/2 clips to take down a Brute Captain's shields.

I got to vote automag. there are more grunts and than there are brutes. jackels take to shots once in the side to get their shield cauntlet out of the way and once in the head. The silenced smg is a good all around weapon but it burns through a LOT of ammo in a very SHORT time. There doesnt seem to be enough ammo for it. btw th silenced smg is major recoil.

  • 04.07.2010 9:23 AM PDT

Both. SMG takes out the shields while the Automag finishes off the enemy with a headshot.

Automag, Headshots FTW!!!
Seriously I only use the SMG if there is no other ammo available. I even pick up the spiker over the SMG. At least the Spiker is useful when Tilt is on.

They both have there uses.
I'm hardly going to try Automag a Hunter on Legendary.
And i'm not going to waste all that SMG ammo on a single grunt when one headshot from the Automag will suffice.

So i vote both.

TEH FLUD SUXORS DEY ARNT IN TEH GAEM

The SMG is better for taking out shield Jackals, Drones, Hunters, various shielded enemies, and unshielded Brutes with helmets.

The Pistol is better for taking out Grunts, non-shielded Jackals, and non-shielded Brutes.

The SMG is an all around better weapon, it is decent at draining both shields and health, while the Pistol is good at headshots.

Sorry, I can't hear them over the sounds of Modern Warfare 3 on my Turtle Beaches.

Silenced SMG is good against Hunters and Drones.

Automag is good for everything else - although it needs a Plasma Pistol to help with Brutes.

Overall, I say both - the particular reason I bought ODST in the first place, to use these guns.

Though the automag brings back some of the memory of Halo: CE pistol I'm gonna have to go with the SMG because of the way it take out a whole group of drones, sure I can headshot a drone with the automag or carbine which is very easy by the way if you need help in campaign or firefight but I always go with an automatic, walk up to them and beat the crap out of them 'cause that's how I roll.

bungie has proven that a bunch of monkeys sitting in front of keyboards can randomly type out a masterpiece. the thing is, when you go to play the masterpiece, you cant help but notice all the monkey s**t smeared all over it.

it gets real old having to wait months for someone like mlg to clean off all the monkey poo.

pistol excels against everything except hunters. the smg can only kill drones.

hmmmm....

Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

SMG, unless you have Carbine or any other full auto weapon (AR included), is a must have against drones (and the Carbine is definitely preferable). Automag is useless against them. As for against other enemies, it's useful for taking out brutes shields so you can follow up for the headshot.

It can also be useful against the 2 hunters on the Tayari Plaza level should you choose to fight them on Legendary, although it has minimal effect unless you can stay near the 2 health packs near the doors you enter the area where you battle the hunters from, and then stay on the top level near the edge (the hunters are very stupid here and try to melee you from the other side of the wall and lower down on the street). In fact, anything but headshot weapons is useful against them, SMG, Shotgun, any and all grenades, AR, and the plasma turret from the previous area are all useful weapons and will eventually enable you to kill both those hunters.

Automag, useful against grunts, jackals (including the shielded jackals - one shot to stun them followed by a quick headshot is arguably the most efficient way to kill these, unless you grenade them, but then i'd only use grenades if there was a small group of them), and (provided you can actually hit them) unshielded brutes, however, in my experience, unshielded brutes typically berserk and become difficult to headshot with automag.

My favourite weapons, at least on Legendary difficulty campaign, are the Carbine and the Beam Rifle, as they're both as least moderately common (especially the Carbine) and pretty much always useful. Though, obviously try to avoid engaging hunters unless you have plenty (at least 10) grenades and good aim with the grenades. The carbine is excellent for taking out grunts, brutes (although it takes several shots due to their shields), jackals and drones. Beam Rifle, as always, is best to use against brutes, 2 shots minimum though in my experience, even if I get a headshot 1st shot. Unless of course you're lucky enough to be able to line up 2 or more grunts, then go ahead, but carbine is better against grunts due to the more readily available ammo.

(I voted Automag out of the 2 weapons in the poll)
