Send a little touch to the mods on this one people; they’re the ones who stickied it.

Thanks for the praise MorphKing, but this is a Tactics thread, not a troubleshooter. If you have a question about tactics or a tip you want others to see so they can try; post it here. You might try posting your question in the forums. If I see it there, I’ll give you some suggestions.

I’m a little cooked on my tips, but I’ve got one that most people seem to get a kick out of when I do it in game:

Practice falling in areas that have a slanting cliff. Sometimes, you can crouch land (hit ctrl as you hit the ground) from a height that would kill you if you just jumped from it and survive if you just slide down the hill at the right angle. An example of this would be at teles in Infinity. Either side, if you slide down the hill and crouch land at the right time, you’ll skid out instead of going splat. I’ve even used this out in the middle when I was getting the beat down by a banshee. It’s a great getaway because most pilots see you fall and move on to other targets (leaving you to live and fight another day).

Also works on Hang Em High if you land at the edge of the trench and “slide” down or if you hit those little cubes at just the right angle.

NOTE: this is an advanced trick expecting you to have fairly fine tuned control over MC; expect to die often when you first start out doing it. But, if you’re in a game of team slayer and an opponent is charging at you with a Fuel rod, what do you have to lose? The least that could happen is you “die” without giving him the kill, right?

As for the size…guys. Come on. I gave you every weapon, vehicle, and map in the multiplayer game. Like I said at the top, don’t try to read all of it, just the stuff you’re having trouble with, okay?

There seems to be a lot of complaints about camping tanks. Here's a few ways to deal with them:

On tank busting: When a tank is turned around with his turret pointed backward and he moves to avoid a nade (by either pressing “W” or “S”), the first thing that happens is that the tank begins to turn in the direction his view is pointed. this means that for a half a second or so, the tank is moving...but stationary (thanks to the Scorpion's zero turning radius). If you throw your nade well, you'll end up with a near miss at least and knock out most (if not all) of his shields. Finish off with pistols, sniper or heavies. Your preference.

If he’s too far away to hurl and shoot (which usually means he’s out in the open and snipable from somewhere) have your team constantly chuck nades at him long range, like an artillery barrage. That’ll dislodge him from his cozy spot quick, even if it’s nothing more than a series of near misses. A good tank driver knows to avoid nades. They kill.

Note: you do not need to be in a game with unlimited nades for this to work. nades fire in a straight line with your targeting recticle. the higher you look, the farther they go. You can do this from long range with practice and not be"'wasting" your nades.

Another easy kill on a tank: the fuel rod gun has an arcing shot if you remember. A tank using a hill for cover is often easy prey for one of these bad boys. Just let the rods natural arc whip the shot over the hill...and onto the driver's head.

Also: Camp busting, imho, is the main reason camo is in the multiplayer game. Grab the goody of your choice before going invis and blow him to smithereens.

More later.

Target lock (i.e. zoning out on the rest of your environment and focusing only on what you see in your target reticule) is an epidemic among most snipers (and just about any type of camper out there today). Fastest way to take them out? From behind of course.

If you can sneak in and get behind their “killzone”, you almost guarantee a kill.

If they’re just too well placed to do this (Danger Canyon camped at the OS), or they’re covered from the rear by something else (Sidewinder; rkt hog camping downstairs while sniper guards teleporter upstairs), you may have to fall back on a bit of camping yourself. Camp his rearm spawn (the place the sniper rifle respawns closest to the sniper) or use a sniper rifle yourself to take him on from long range. If no sniper rifle is available, the pistol still offers some defense at scoped ranges.

As always, heavy weapons kill anything quickly. Nades are a great way to dislodge a sniper from a cushy camping spot. Just be careful. Most snipers today learn to become proficient with nades so they can fight boom with boom.

A lot of this is contingent on getting in close to a sniper. That’s the real secret. The sniper rifle is not as effective at close range as, say, the shotgun. Close Quarters Combat (CQC) with a sniper rifle is like trying to cut a tree down with a scalpel. Wrong tool for the wrong job; it can be done, but you’re better off using the axe. That’s why most snipers keep a good close quarters fighting weapon handy just in case (pistol, shotgun, flamethrower, etc).

Also, many of snipers now tend to relocate after firing, to prevent another sniper from camping them in retaliation (this has the side effect of holding off target lock for a longer period of time). If faced with one of these snipers you may be in trouble. Learn their habits and try to get them while they’re relocating. Often times, if you hit before they’re ready, you fluster them into a mistake and an easy kill.

If the sniper’s killzone is wide (like the Danger Canyon example) you might try to get a teammate to run interference for you. He stays out at long range and dodges around like a loon, holding the snipers tightly scoped attention while you sneak in through the blind spot. Better still, have that teammate set up shop on one corner of the snipers killzone and you take the opposite side. Get him in a crossfire and the poor sniper won’t have anywhere to run to or hide.

As with any tactic you want to defeat, try doing it yourself first before you take someone else on. Find out what kills you when you snipe and where. Then you’ll know how to fight someone whose using that tactic against you next time.

A good tactic to use when "Dancing with Hogs" Is to use a combination of a plasma pistol and a shotgun. Plasma pistol the hog to take out the drivers sheilds and then dance around the hog booming away with the shotgun or pistol from medium to close range. This will easily kill a foe who has no gunner and is going for splatter kills. This works great in free for all slayer because there are tons of plasma pistols laying around.

just some random -blam!- i realized

1) congratulations on your guide being stickied

2) if shields and health are at their defaults, you can take out a banshee with 4 sniper rifle shots and just a bit less than one full clip of pistol shots (it only works if all of your shots actually hit the banhsee).

3) there is a hidden overshield in icefields where you would normally ignore, but pass by it more than you think. don't ask me for the answer; i'm making this a challenge/test for you to find it on your own.

hey i'm not sure if this is in there but a tip....
When using a pistol at a mid range distance, take ur time shoting. Me, i wait 1 sec. between each shot. Its alot more accurate, a little dodging need to be put in the tactic though. But with alittle practice u'll be yelled at for cheating in no time at all.(And by the way, being yelled at for cheating cause of this tactic is a good thing, it means ur getting better) Good luck to u all. O_o and thanks for all the other great tips

This is a semi-bump since we’ve been getting so many players into the Maw recently…and I played Halo for a week and started noticing some serious lack of teamwork in game. If you see someone truly sucking, point them in this direction.

But this wouldn’t be a tactics thread if I didn’t add something new so…

HOW TO DEFEAT THE AIMBOT O’NATURAL

EDIT: text removed by poster due to misinformation. After speaking with the creator of the first aimbot, it IS a real aimbot. It locks onto the target, even if they can't see it. So. Avoid hills as a defense, as they will jump up to pop you in the head, and you can't retaliate because the hill obstructs YOUR view. The player doesn't even have to "see" you. He just has to see his target sight turn red.

Best way to fight them is face to face. This removes more of the aimbots usefullness. they still have lockon, but the bigger the MC on your screen, the more even the playing field. lag rules still apply. Fi they are 258 ping and you are 101, your three head shots will hit "before" there's do.

A big point for team games: most of these hackers do not work and play well with others. Also, they seem to avoid vehicles (the ones I’ve suspected). I think the added ping of another player in the warthog messes with their aim. But the point is, they like to camp out a cushy spot to hit you while you can’t hit him (typically, you can spot an auto-lead if he's hyper accurate at long ranges...and tends to stay at long ranges). In bigger maps, this is to your advantage. Learn where he sleeps…and either avoid it, ram heavy weps down his throat or snipe him silly. No pistol can fight the sniper for range--no matter how accuratly fired--and no MC can stand up to two other determined MC’s with heavy weapons or close range shotguns hopping out of a moving hog...just to mess up his day.

All for now. Play fair, good gaming and…Good luck.

These are really nice tactics, but about the part about you killing snipers with a tank? Grenades and snipers are the best way to kill a tank...(maybe a ghost doing 360's around a tank while firing too..)
This helped me a little, about the part about pulling out a shotty and unloading your pistol.....you don't know how much that helped me...
It'll take a while but the ghost will always kill a sniper that's not hiding! They always miss, heh.

nice suggestion, but a cautionary tale:

My first few days in halo PC Multiplayer were a series of transitions. Aside from learning to shoot all over again, i had to learn to fight vehicles all over again. On Xbox, the ghost is murder to a tank. The 360 trick described above works perfectly, as the tank turret turns slower than it does in Halo PC, even with scroll speed turned all the way up. Your ghost can actually "outrun" a turning tank turret indefinatly in Halo Xbox. But in Halo PC, this has changed. The tank turns considerably faster, and its turret too.

As mentioned in the guides, most people use shees to fight tanks now, and vice versa. Aside from being slightly faster than the nimble ghost, they have a much wider range of movement. An erratic flyer can get right over the top of a tank, above the axis of his shot, and stay there. Turning his nose straight down, the shee pilot can then tear into the tank with a will close or long range, only moving as the tank pulls backwards to bring him back into firing position.

That trick, coupled with the Fuel rod to knock out a tank's shields, is the most used method for hitting a tank unawares. I say unawares because you have to get into that cozy down the throat shot position. A good tanker is always moving these days, to avoid the sniper scenerio also described above. Most will spot you now, making it a race between the shee to get safely overhead and the tank to get a sweet spot kill.

There are times, though, when a shee is not available. But this doesn't leave you without options. Heavy weps are your best friends against a tank. the Fuel rod can typically kill in three shots; the rocket in one. If you miss the sweet spot and the tank is still moving, swap to pistols. His shields and health are already down so its better to finish him now and risk dying in the process than jump skulk around waiting for the rocket to reload, the fuel rod to cool off, etc, while the tank recharges his shields, gets his wits about him, or just plain gets mad enough to storm you and take his chances.

While not as proficient as I'd like to be (everyone has a weakness) the Rocket hog can serve as a decent tank buster as well. You need to get closer to the tank than most sane drivers want to...then again; tank busting in an overgrown jeep is not a job for sane people, now is it?

The ghost has passed to the bottom rung of the tactics laddar for me. While still capable of killing a tank, she doesn't have the non-shielded firepower to finish the job quickly. But the 360 trick can still work (sort of) as well as other things. Instead of circling the tank forever (or trying to) close as close as you can with the tank and unload right in his face. the tank has a wide skirt (the area around it upon which it cannot hit anything) so a vehicle close enough and small enough--and nimble enough--might avoid the fire from it's turret. For the 360 trick, hit him just long enough for his shields to fall--and dismount. With luck and timing, the tank driver will continue tracking your ghost, giving you the extra time to bring your pistol to bear for a fast no shield kill. Or, lol, if you have a fuel rod, you've just made yourself a poor man's Banshee.

A recnet thread discussion about "attacking" got me thinking about this. Props to those who suggested some of these tips; you know who you are.

Mouse sensitivity is a big factor in your aim. If your mouse is set at ten, you turn quickly, meaning you can manuever better, probably dodge well, and drive with fine tuned precision. This also aides when being pummeled from behind by plasma weapons.

But that doesn't help when you whip out a gun. A fast mouse usually means sloppy shooting, missed shots, and wasted ammo. To combat this, you need to tailor your mouse speed to your own ability. If you can shoot well at ten, thats great. But most of us will find lowering the sensitivity on our mouse keeps us from overreacting in combat. When you panic, you tend to jerk your mouse toward where the shots are coming from. If you then pull the trigger, you miss more often than you hit.

Mouse sensitivity is pure user preference and should be tailored to your combat style. If you like to fly and drive, go for a slightly higher setting(8 to 10). If you vary your weapons a lot, try anywhere from 5 to 7. If you're a precision shooter, relying mostly on pistols and sniper, its been suggested that you can go as low as 2.

A lot of people try to "train" themselves to use a higher mouse sensitivity. My reply: horse apples!! Forcing yourself to use a higher (or lower!) mouse sensitivity than you feel comfortable with for your play style makes about as much sense as forcing yourself to write with your right hand when you are a natural lefty. The more comfortable you feel in this game, the better you will perform.

The key point is this: if you're missing a lot and its not due to lag or leading, try adjusting your mouse sensitivity rating. Chances are that just a little casual fiddling will grant phenomenal returns on in game performance.

Play Fair and Good Gaming
