Just wanted to know where you all got your Avatars from? On top of that, explain your reason for choosing it. And, if it was taken from a bigger picture, could you possibly provide a link to the picture?
Mine is from Marathon 2: Durandal. In the battle against the Phfor, the Pfhor create a series of Simulacra, and pack them with explosives. They look just like regular BOBs, but will say bizarre things ("Frog blast the vent core!"), will not fire at the enemies, and will run up to you and explode on contact.
The original painting, available here, was painted by Craig Mullins, who did all the chapter screens for Marathon 2 and Infinity, as well as a lot of concept and advertisement work for Marathon (not to mention stuff for Oni, the Myth series, and the Halo series). The painting is the chapter screen for the appropriately named "Simulacrum."
Originally, when I had chosen BOB as my avatar, I had in place of the white "Moderator" text "SimulaMod." Right before submitting it, though, I realized most no one around here would get it, so I changed it back to Moderator.
PS, I and many others thought it would be a cool idea to give trusted members their own, personal avatar as a thank you from Bungie (somebody who has continually contributed positively to the site, forums etc).
What does everyone think?
Not going to happen, sorry. Giving everyone unique avatars creates security and abuse issues. Giving "special members" custom avatars is playing favorites and could easily become a popularity game. As you can tell by the way we do things such as ban the use of the word "noob," we try not to seperate users into groups, and we try not to give older users some elite presence over newer users.
As such, custom avatars go only to Bungie staff and the moderators. The moderators only get custom avatars because it makes it clear that we are, in fact, moderators. This is a necessary seperation from regular users so regular users know who to turn to when they have a problem or a question (or money, we'll gladly take money).
So it goes.
