Quick warning to any of you guys who are using a VGA connection for your 360! If you do not have the updated maps the downloader won't launch in VGA mode! Don't forget the ones on the map pack disc no longer work online!

Is there any way to leave 'VGA mode'?

Not if you are using a VGA cable no. You have to use either an SD or HDTV mode either via HDMI, Component, SCART etc. Which basically means you need to hook it up to a TV, unless you have a converter for your monitor of some kind!

Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;
Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom
Remember us - if at all - not as lost

yeah i had this problem 3 months back, as already said hook it up to a tv and download the updates, thats all there is to it

So you can't just drop the res right down?

I was trying to download the maps, but wasn't getting video till I dropped the resolution right down.

I have my 360 hooked up to my screen via a HDMI -> DVI cable, and the 360 registers it as a DVI connection. The 360's resolution was on 1680x1420 (22" res), and the downloader didn't like it. I dropped the res to 640x480 and it actually showed video, which the other hadn't.

My sister has the same sort of set up, just a dif, slightly smaller screen, and her 360 registers it as HDMI, and gives her the HD quality options (480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p). She likes it on 480 (though it works ALOT better on 720) and it worked fine for her.

Pretty much, have you tried dropping the resolution right down?

Sometimes changing the resolution on your console can make it work. A lot of people seem to forget, there was no such thing as 1080 resolution when Halo 2 came out. If I remember right it says on the back of the game case that it is 480 HD resolution.

Changing the display seems to not work all the time, but its the easiest thing to try before ripping into your whole setup that you use to play games. Don't forget you may also need to hit the switch on the cable itself after you make the change on your console.

Switching down to 640X480 did nothing for me. The error message says 'software not compatible with VGA mode' so I guess this only applies to VGA cable, not HDMI > DVI etc.

I've had no troubles with my VGA connection. Downloaded the maps the other day on my 360

The problem I am having (and op too probably) is that Halo 2 online features do not support VGA due to them being locked to 50hz. That was done becuase back when Halo 2 was launched, not everyone had a 60hz TV thus there was an incompatibility so Bungie just restricted all online parts to 50hz.

With the VGA cables, you cannot change the refresh rate. So if your screen is 50 or 100hz you would probably be able to play it without a problem.

Just had a look at this guide: http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=975066
Apparently it's a PAL only problem so you NTSC guys in the US needn't worry anyway.

Yea, I wasn't sure if NTSC regions had different refresh rtes.

But Halo 2's online is locked to pal-50 and VGA doesn't allow change. So if your screen is 50 or 100hz you should be able to play. If not, go find your old cables and that old 15inch CRT lol
