how do u get other avatars besides the ones in settings??? i have noticed ppl ahve other ones too so some1 help me out

Well, some of the avatars you see are people Halo 2 icon that they use for multiplayer. If you have Xbox Live you can link your gamertag to your .NET Passport and have that for your avatar here also.

Other people you see are moderators, theme masters and Bungie employees. Us "normals" can't have personalized avatars beside the Halo 2 icon.

It is the very last avatar on the very last page on the lists of avatars. Don't try to use it, I won't let you... Oh wait, I can't do a damn thing about it. :-)

What is it with not letting us use our own avatars? That's total crap! Every message board in the world allows their users to have custom avatars. Even my friend's free website had a message board that allowed custom avatars. There's no excuse! That's how you differentiate yourself from other people online!

I'd also like to say that these forums definitely need a big tune-up in general. The layout and interface of the forums and posting could definitely use some attention. I'm not trying to sound mean. I just think it would be much appreciated by users and would make the forums much more user-friendly.

We can't have custom avatars because idiots would abuse the power of them. I know other websites may allow it, but have you ever seen how many blacklists the mods hand out a day for inappropriate material being posted? It's the same reason why we can't use image tags.

If it was a better idea to use this method, then every message board would do it like this. People just can't be stupid. Our freedom shouldn't be ruined just because a few peole decide to put inappropriate material in their avatars and signatures.

Even besides all that, we can probably all agree that the Bungie.net message boards could use some work.

Our freedom...

Well there's your problem, you think that we actually have freedom here.

I don't agree that. I think they're fine. We don't need any more features and without distractions, people can concentrate more on their posts.

If you think most people won't be stupid, then allow me to say one thing.

Welcome to Bungie.net.

There was never a freedom to ruin.

We don't need custom avatars.

1) It's custom avatars that make the Bungie Staff, Moderators, and Theme Masters unique.

2) Custom avatars would only slow down the site.

3) There's always going to be someone who just has to post an inappropriate picture and ruin the fun for everyone.

We already have four pages of avatars anyways.

Even besides all that, we can probably all agree that the Bungie.net message boards could use some work.

What is wrong with them? I think they are fine.

  • 08.06.2005 4:13 PM PDT

Users who actually contribute to the community are rewarded with things like custom avatars. If we let everyone use their own avatar then how would we reward contributors?

I'm not asking for more "features." I'm asking for simplicity. Ease of use. Bungie.net is a very aesthetically complex place that does not use space well. My suggestions: that menu on the bottom? It needs to go. The site should also be setup for 1024x768 resolutions. Most of you have probably noticed a lot of wasted space to your right. Who the hell uses 800x600 anymore? I'll tell you: no one. Not even people with 15" monitors. They should also take out any unnecessary jpegs and big fancy buttons. Some computers may also experience choppiness when scrolling through pages. That means there's too much crap on screen. Simplifying the site and stream-lining the interface would be a great thing for Bungie.net.

BTW, I wasn't saying that I thought people wouldn't be stupid. I said we should do that despite people being stupid.

I use 800x600 on my laptop at home, it's the only one I can use. You are also contradicting yourself by asking for custom avatars then saying:

Are you saying that the rest of us should have to suffer because of one or two people? That's ridiculous. Bungie.net could also allow users to decide whether they want to enter the site in different resolutions anyway.

That's not a contradiction. Nothing will be added. I just want to be able to use my own avatar. And of course, I don't count avatars as "unnecessary jpegs".

The ability to use your own avatar shouldn't be a reward, it should be a privilege. Those who abuse the privilege should be forced to choose from a selection.

Time is saved by only handing them out to people Bungie.net staff knows they can trust. They don't have to go through and find every person abusing them.

There's little point in having an avatar if it doesn't differentiate you from others. There are a lot of talented people who make really cool avatars and signatures. If every other message board can do it, then certainly Bungie.net can.

Not everyone will have the avatar you choose from the list. Plus, if you have Halo 2 & Xbox Live, you can also use your Live emblem.

And they are more than welcome to submit them to [email]7themes@bungie.com[/email] for possible addition to the selection of public avatars.

Yes, but there are still a lot of people with the same ones and there's little complexity in Live emblems. The real enjoyment anyway, is making one yourself.

The avatar thing is actually my last complaint on my list. The other things I discussed actually bother me more and there would only be beneficial results from the changes.

I'm really not trying to be a big butt. I'm just trying to offer ideas to make the Bungie.net experience a little better.

And they are more than welcome to submit them to 7themes@bungie.com for possible addition to the selection of public avatars.

Although I wouldn't really like the thought of other people using an avatar that I made, I just may like to submit one. What dimensions are used for the avatars?

I've only run into two other people with my avatar, and one of them was impersonating me. Although I have been hoping for more old school avatars, like a drinniol or something. More pictures for Marathon and Myth, to differentiate old people and new.

I think I should do that. But then again, they won't get accepted.
