Subject: SMG starts were a bad idea?

I noticed in the tips today while waiting for a match to start that Bungie said something like SMG starts were a bad idea. Really? Was it that bad? The SMG is a really versatile weapon and starting with it at least gives you options at the beginning of a match. You can either swap it out for a power weapon or dual wield it with another weapon. It's a way better solution than the Assault Rifle starts in Halo 3. The only option you have with that is to just get rid of it as soon as possible. Also, SMG starts are better than Battle Rifle starts, because those matches just turn into a one weapon match and that just becomes boring.

I think that SMG starts and dual wielding is what brought Halo into the main stream and enabled it to sell millions of copies. Halo 1 was dominated by the overpowered Pistol and really only appealed to hardcore gamers. SMG starts are the main reason why I played H2 way more than H3. Now, with the rumor that Halo Reach won't even have the SMG at all, I'll probably play it even less. I'll probably just play the campaign and that's it. Oh, well. Halo 2 was fun while it lasted.

Reachhhhhhhh

Thats why I hated AR starts. With AR starts, people would only dual wield if they REALLY, REALLY wanted to. With SMG starts, everyone dual wielded making it a more fun game. I also agree with Jason that BR starts is boring because it turns into a one weapon match.

I think that Bungie is just trying to be funny. :)

But, I do recall that during a Podcast they said that duel-wielding took away from the core gameplay triangle. The triangle was Shooting, beating, and throwing grenades. Duel-wielding took away beat downs and grenade throwing. That might be one reason why they said it wasn't a good idea.

No, SMG starts were a bad idea and they are not kidding. They even said it back in the first MP Vidoc for Halo 3. SMG starts made the game stale and since everyone just duel wielded, no one used melee or threw grenades.

If you are terrible at the game I can see how you would think SMG starts were a good idea though...

I don't think that dual wielding took away from the core game play at all. There is plenty of melees and nades in every game that I play. I think that dual wielding adds to the variety of game play so that nading and meleeing isn't the only thing that people are doing. Plus, it's not like you can't melee or grenade at all while dual wielding. You can just pick up your secondary weapon after meleeing and if you want to throw a nade, all you have to do is hit Y to drop your secondary. Also, if they thought that it detracted from the game so much, why did they take so long to do BR starts? Remember back when the game was first released and there was this huge demand for BR starts, but Bungie resisted it for the longest time.

SMG starts are fine up until after the initial power weapon push. Once one team wins the initial push and has almost all the BRs on the map you spawn with a bullet hose (of which I am named) and end up getting spawn wrecked. Its the same issue I have with AR starts in H3, but worse. Because you have the illusion that picking up another SMG will balance it out.

SMG starts were a bad idea.
