Depends, really. I'm in college right now, and I have more use for a notebook, bringing it around and using wireless hotspots. Mine is a decent all-around computer; it does games, plays all types of media, helps me finish those d@mned reasearch papers, and more. I recommend a laptop for those who need to take their work with them.
If you're going to use your computer more for gaming or multimedia, I'd definitely go with a desktop. Desktops are upgradeable (98% of laptops on the market aren't upgradeable), much more flexible, and don't overheat as quickly as laptops.
As for brands, do your reasearch. I have an HP, but its not the most perfect system around. Try to get a good deal, though. And above all, list the things you need, the things you want, then do your reasearch and decide on a computer.
