Some may know that you can access the information stored on your HDD for an Original Xbox or 360 and extract the maps, along with other files. Now that the servers that host the Halo 2 maps are going offline, will Bungie make available the maps on their site? If not, could some legal download method be put in place for people to obtain the maps and place them on their harddrives, for LAN parties and the like?

PS, placing these files onto a memory card formatted for the Xbox would allow them to be moved onto a HDD via the Xbox's own file manager. The maps have little to no encryption that would block transfer and duplication of the files, unlike 360 files, which are heavily encrypted and keyed to the specific Xbox and user. In short, placing the files on the Bungie.net site for free download could be a useful and meaningful effort to keep the game alive, and to not let the content die with Xbox Live.

Well you could always buy the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack disc from Amazon.com if you want the maps after Halo 2 itself is offline.

I don't understand why they can't put them onto these 360 servers.

Have they said?

Then you'll just need to find a way to get Tombstone and Desolation, as they aren't included in that disc.

That disk is lacking in two of the maps, the remake of Derelict and of Hang em High. These maps were released after the disk was and are only available from XBL.

Beat me to it.

I have yet to see anything about Bungie releasing the maps on their site or the marketplace after the shut down. Your best bet is to just download them before they are gone.

As far as the map disc goes, people have been having trouble with it recently. It seems like the game will not update past version 1.1 if you use the disc or copy the maps from it to your hard drive. If you want to play on live you need to have the game updated to version 1.5. That update came out after the last two maps were released.

I guess what it all comes down to is that your best bet is to download them before they are gone.

Thanks for the heads up, I was just looking down the road to problems in the future that could be solved now.
In any case, what is Bungie's stance on transferring the maps, as they are copyrighted information, but will be "going out of print" soon so to speak?

I honestly have no idea. I have yet to see them say anything about it yet.

This is the average H2 Fanboy.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

I'm just going to say it is in a grey area. You need to mod your xbox original or you need to use unathorized hdd attachments on 360 to put on the maps.
Also, there is a port of tombstone to h2v, and the same person is working on a desolation port.
