Defensive mentality got me in a lot of trouble in that firefight. After much trial and error I found agressive attack to work far better.
Dropship #1: Frag the closest grunts and Overcharge/M6D combo the elites. Make certain you kill the last enemy when you are as close to the next dropships touchdown point. You need to be up close to Dropship#2. I manage to hide next to a tall tree right next to the doors that open to let out the two elites(grunts jackals on far side). I throw a pair of stickies. That's almost always enough. I throw a single frag under the departing dropship and then pistol the survivors. I note where needlers are and pick one up on my way to dropship #3. I don't get too close to it but throwing a pair of stickies when the doors begin to open times their blast perfectly when the elites jump out. If they aren't killed outright the needler chews them up. I then pistol the grunts and make certain the last one I kill gets me as close to the touchdown of #4 as possible. I actually climb up the main structure and grab more ammo(health if needed) and wait there for #4's doors to open. I drop two stickies when the doors on the left open and clean up the survivors with needler or PP/M6D combo and then pistol the grunts that stream towards the right of the structure. I actually move down the ramp and time it so I kill the last one as close to #5's touchdown as possible. Here it gets tricky.
I try to frag the grunts on the left side and toss a pair of stickes to injure or kill the elites. Needler doesn't work all that well because of the crown of the hill. From here you need to spam whatever frags you have left for #6.
It's a pretty far throw, and easy for timing to stack up against you here. The upside is they want to charge your marines on the main structure and you can do some damage before they turn on you.
Key strategy are these:
Kill the last enemy from each dropship as close to your next touchdown as possible.
Throw stickies when doors begin to open.
Plasma Pistol Combo works well, but needler rapes in open ground.
The key is mobility. Never stand still. Note where keys weapons drop and don't backtrack or veer from your next touchdown in order to grab them.
If your timing is right you will pack the Pelican with survivors and have a gunner and passenger with optimal health for the next leg of your mission.

I could barely finish it on Heroic...
I'm not gonna lie to you guys, I'm a serious Halo series fan, from an active forums member, to the book series reader, to the game worshipper. But it took me forrrrreevvvvverrr to beat the second level (Halo) on Legendary when you have to hold out camp on top of that first Forerunner structure as the Spirit dropships keep coming in. I ran out of ammo every time in my pistol and the Elites were sooo strong. And all your worthless marines would be dead after like two dropships. I just beat that level last year (I started playing the game like 10 years ago when I was 8). I had every other level beat on Legendary though for the longest time. It was only in the past 4 years though that I actually became really good at the Halo games. In my early years it was sort of just a pastime playing the game I wasn't hooked on the Halo world yet. Now Legendary is easy. Every once in a while I have trouble with the last wave of Flood in the Library but that's all. I sold my disc copy too and didn't download the xbox original till like '08 I think.
