Before Halo 2, I had a lot of hobbies. I was a huge player of Magic: The Gathering (Mirrodin block FTW). I played D&D every Thursday. I was also a drug abusing Junior High Schooler when it came out. I loved Halo 1 and was very eagerly anticipating the sequel.
Then it came.
I had no idea just how much of my life Halo 2 would take over. I quit all of those prior things just to play it, I loved it so. And play it I did.
I was still playing it regularly when I graduated High School. When I started college, I was prepared to kind of sit in the back of the class and keep to myself. Then I made friends playing Halo 2 in the lounge. We played it constantly. After class every day, Halo 2. Every Saturday, Halo 2 at someone's house. We played, and we played, and we played.
We waited in line for Halo 3 with all of our recently acquired 360's waiting at home. When we got it though, something changed. We didn't play it nearly as much. We moved on to other games and such. It just wasn't the same. Now, while we are all still great friends, we just don't play as much together anymore (mostly because we're all over 21 now and really just get drunk together).
Even looking back, I don't consider 2 the best in the series (I'd even say it's probably the one I'd rank the lowest in terms of quality). I even prefer 3's MP. But 2 was a turning point for me. I loved it so, and I will always have those memories.
Between Halo 2 and SC: CT, I'm getting all teary-eyed just thinking about the true end of an era. It's about time I picked those up on PC then, huh.
RIP XB1 Live, especially Halo 2.
