Hi, I'm a journalist for Official Xbox Magazine in the UK, and I'm currently writing a feature on the final days of old Xbox Live from the point of view of game communities. I have a few questions about Halo 2 that I hope some of you will be able to answer for me, would really appreciate the help and it's a good chance to get your name in print.

1) What have the final few days of Halo 2 been like, any favourite moments so far?

2) Have the servers suddenly got busier than usual because old Xbox Live is being shut down?

3) How often did you play the game in the past?

4) Has anyone gone back to the game after a long time away from it?

Everyone feel free to chip in, the more answers I get, the better the article will be! If you want to email me, my work address is ben.talbot@futurenet.co.uk

They've been great me and my friends have all been getting on.
I just liked going through all the old maps it made you look back on alot of memories.

2.Yes last night there were nearly 12,000 people online there is usually a steady number of 800-1000 on at any given time.

3.Everyday after school for hours with friends.

4.Yes most people stopped for the 360 at one point or another.

1) They've been something to remember why I stopped playing Halo 2; lag, BXR, super hopping. Saw it all in one day. It's crazy.

2) I couldn't tell, Halo 2 was always laggy because of a lot of people.

3) I played it for a while, actually. Before people starting uses glitches or bugs way too frequently.

4) Besides now, I tried to play Legendary Co-op with a friend of mine last December. We both hated it, because Iron was automatically on.

Also, prove you're Ben Talbot.

1) What have the final few days of Halo 2 been like, any favourite moments so far?

In a word: crazy. I have too many favorite moments. There were so many shenanigans, so much fun. It wasn't frustrating to lose. It was very friendly, and one of my favorite moments was when the enemy flag carrier on Headlong was flipping out when one of my teammates was attacking him. He was yelling and babbling incoherently. Everyone within earshot was just laughing and giggling.

2) Have the servers suddenly got busier than usual because old Xbox Live is being shut down?

I played on Tuesday night as well. I couldn't find a match in some playlists. Last night, there was practically no wait. It was like going to Disneyland in January.

3) How often did you play the game in the past?

I arrived at Halo 2 online VERY late. I played offline for years, but hadn't gotten XBL. Before Halo 3 came out, I played Halo 2 online every single night. Homework was second to my Halo 2.

4) Has anyone gone back to the game after a long time away from it?

Oh yeah, I'm sure plenty of people here fit into that boat. You don't know what you have until its about to be taken away from you. I sure took Halo 2 for granted, and I kind of feel guilty about it now.

Halo 3 owns!!

1)
I face-humped a few people with my, as bungie put it unwashed, sweaty cod-piece in memory of H2. The T-Bagging mechanics were like none other and the humiliation factor is just fantastic. Personally, i feel its a great way to honour H2's memory.

Favourite moments, not many that happened on the final day, but i did get get some Mario style kills, i.e. Jump on them and assassinate.

2) Have the servers suddenly got busier than usual because old Xbox Live is being shut down?

6-7k people consistently on the final day, i think its safe to say that yes, it defiantly got busier. Many people hopped on, the older community who played before H3 was released, and the newer community that happened to have this game lying around. It's a great way to say farewell.

3) How often did you play the game in the past?

Unfortunly, not as much as i should have. Due to a problem with my original Xbox that i overlooked (My Ethernet port bit the dust), i didn't get on XBL 'till i got a 360. 1 year before the release of H3, so i did get a good bit of gaming time in on it.

4) Has anyone gone back to the game after a long time away from it?

Yes, me. I haven't played H2 in about half a year or more. Halo 3, Gears of War 1 (not 2), Street Fighter IV and Tekken 6 have been eating my time.

Another thing that kept me off H2 for so long after Halo 3 was released was the severe lack of players on it. Understandable but it's a big reason in why i didn't play it as much as i wanted to.

Here's to Halo 2, the game that introduced many of us to XBL and the joys of T-Bagging faceless voices for the sheer fun of it.

here is my pic of spider pig

1) What have the final few days of Halo 2 been like, any favourite moments so far?

These days have been fun, I forgot how much I missed the game. I used to play it all night and all day when I was little, glitching and beating everyone on team snipers. My favourite moment so far was on burial grounds. The other team was about to score so I tried to drive over him in a warthog then he got in the passenger side and tried to beat me down like in halo 3. Realising he couldn't do that I drove him all the way back to the base and we killed him.

2) Have the servers suddenly got busier than usual because old Xbox Live is being shut down?

Yea. I tried to play this game about a month ago and couldn't find anyone. Good thing people came back to relive the days gone by.

3) How often did you play the game in the past?

When it was first released I played it like crazy. I loved Halo: CE and always beat my brother and when I found out xboxlive was included I had to get it to try and play others with an addiction like mine. So lets say I didn't have much of a social life when I was younger.

4) Has anyone gone back to the game after a long time away from it?

I think alot of people have just to relive the memories. It's a shame that the original xboxlive is getting shut down but its all for the better. Bring on new xboxlive features. But more importantly bring on HALO REACH!

(I know this may sound stupid but I have been in the Offical Xbox Magazine for the UK when you reviewed Phantasy Star Online for the original xbox, is it possible you can give me the number for that magazine so I could purchase it? If not thanks anyway good luck!)

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

1. The last couple of days have been amazing, bringing back so many memories from long time ago. The maps Bungie created were truly special, they werent just battlefields, they had spirits and personalities.

2. Yeah, alot of people are playing Halo 2 in recent days and even today to send Halo 2 out with a bang. Nobody wants to miss their last chance of experiencing the game that defined online gaming.

3. I played it alot more in the past, but recently i have played in a couple of years. But thanks to the event Bungie created, i have gotten back in have played nothing else in the past three days. It really brings back memories.

4. Sometimes i would return to play it with friends, but untill these last couple of days, i havent played it majorly, something that after playing it again, i regret.

  • 04.15.2010 9:22 AM PDT

1) It's been fun to get old friends together: last night I managed to get some college friends together. It was a blast.

2) Simply, yes. It was hard to find a game in the past, but it's like was released yesterday.

3) For about a year from release, though not consistently. Until yesterday, I hadn't played it for around a year.

4) Not sure what you mean here, but if you're addressing people directly then I say yes from a personal perspective. A partly grew up playing H2 as a teenager, so I definitely went back.

  • 04.15.2010 9:22 AM PDT

-Life is suffering, now go and enjoy.

1) The final few days have been amazing. Old memories and experiences flooding back into my mind, while adding a few new ones. My favorite moment, of the final days of the Halo 2 regime, would be when i put in the disk and everything from that point on.

2)Yes, the games played in the last 24 hours and the players online in the last 24 hours have increased tenfold.

3)Well with 6000 online games played I played quite frequently even after the Xbox 360 made it's debut.

4)Yes, me and my friends. It's been a while because there are many other great games, such as Halo 3. Halo 2 will always have a special place in our hearts though.

  • 04.15.2010 9:28 AM PDT

1. I was playing for a long time last night, and it was an incredible experience. I've played Halo 2 in the past of course, but this night felt special, probably because it was the last. I had more fun playing that night than I have had playing any game in a long time.

2. Well there were a lot more people playing than usual, but I think the servers handled it well enough. It was nice not having to wait more than five minutes to get into a game for once.

3. I didn't play the game when it was in its prime, and only started after Halo 3. Since then, I've fallen in love with the game. Bungie cites it as being flawed, and sure, it is, but honestly, that's what gives it its magic.

I'll have to make sure to buy next month's OXM from Smith's, it'll be nice to see familiar faces in there.

:)

Rest in peace Halo 2. You gave birth to proper online console gaming, and will always be remembered thus.

  • 04.15.2010 9:31 AM PDT

If you build it, I can destroy it.

1) Are you seriously asking for favorite moments... Halo is one big favorite moment!

2) BTB was extremely laggy for me. I just about could not play it. I stuck to Team Slayer and it was ok, although it had some lagy moments too.

3) When I bought the game I played a lot of LAN parties. When I got a 360 I played until my time card ran out. And now I played my last.

4) Until this year, I had not played the online matchmaking since 2006. Remembering the old controls was the hardest part for me, since I use bumber jump on H3.

It was awesome... but all good things must end, except one.

  • 04.15.2010 9:36 AM PDT

1) The final days have been great! I forgot how much fun this game really was.

2)The servers have definitely gotten busier now that Halo 2 is going offline.

3) When the game first came out, I played almost everyday or about 3 years.

4) I started playing it again yesterday after not playing it much at all when I bought my XBOX 360 on launch day.

My Cast: http://www.justin.tv/girlsandgaming

1)It's been nice thinking about the good old times but once you got back in there, I made some new friends. Something most games lack now thanks to the party system on the 360. It has really divided us.

2)I can find a game quicker, as long as it's on on team doubles. Something that was a struggle the last few weeks.

3) A really lot. I thought i played Halo 3 a lot but my stats say I've played over 6k Halo 2 game.

4)I do it often. Thank you for taking my back up game away from me! Pfft!

ODST General since Halo 2
Xbox Live status - Repaired

1) The past couple of days have been kind of mixed. I have run into lag, glitching, and trash talking. But I have also had a chance to play with a Bungie employee, played with big community members such as Dropship Dude (sort of), and just had a fun time chatting with the community in general.

2)I haven't been around in a long time, I got matched against the same people a lot, in fact I ran into a couple people I actually knew in Matchmaking.

3)I only had just over 1,000 games in Halo 2 due to how late I got Xbox Live. But I enjoyed almost all of them.

4)Yeah its been a long while since I played Halo 2, I actually had ti find a copy to borrow for yesterday.

  • 04.15.2010 9:46 AM PDT

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

1) Lets see, I played Halo 2 twice in the last week. On Sunday, and again yesterday. And I am REALLY going to miss having it there. The maps were like a blast from the past in a very good way, Terminal, Turf, Sanctuary. I am really going to miss them all.

2) Game search times were extremely fast yesterday most of all. Especially in Big Team Battle, where games almost came up instantly.

3) I never got xbox live until January 2008, so I missed out on alot of Halo 2's online glory days. But I still played it almost every day for two years offline with family, or at LAN parties.

4) I definitely haven't played Halo 2 in a long time. And I am definitely replaying Campaign again.

  • 04.15.2010 9:46 AM PDT

1) The final few days were awesome, I met over 25 new friends on xbl hopefully who will play halo 3 and halo reach beta with me in the time to come.

2) it hasnt been hard to find a single game or custom match since the last 2 days towards the shutdown.

3) I started playing this game 2005 - and stopped around 2007 and then switched back now and then and I am playing this game non stop in its final days.

4) Just gotten back into it as sadly its about to go away from xbox live forever...

Edit: 7100 + games played.

1)The Final days have been great! Only thing that I loved was the updated did you know? sections and remember all the old maps and such.

2)I did notice a lot more people on halo 2 this past week and most in a awesome cheery mood

3) I have a few thousand games (3729) of h2 under my belt and since halo 3 came out, I occasionally played a few games halo 2 ever six months or so.

4) I played it a lot more recently and still noticed some things that it does not have still not been done to this day.

Pretty interesting, I forgot how much different Halo 2 is than Halo 3, or any other more recent shooters for that matter. Graphics seem incredibly dated now, it's kind of funny to remind myself that those graphics were the absolute best at one point.

2) Have the servers suddenly got busier than usual because old Xbox Live is being shut down?

Yeah, certainly.

3) How often did you play the game in the past?

Up until Halo 3 came out, basically every day for at least an hour. I think everyone played that game.

4) Has anyone gone back to the game after a long time away from it?

Oh yeah, I haven't touched the game in two and a half years (since halo 3 came out, basically). I spent so much of my life playing Halo 2, though, I had to say goodbye to it. Halo is one of the reasons I decided to get an Xbox360.

Oh, and as for replying to Mr Monobrow:

1. Yep, favourite moment being the aforementioned Warthog fun with XtremeSpartan1.

2. Can't really say, I only came back when I knew the servers would be shutting down soon.

3. Not too often, if I'm honest. It was the first game I played on Xbox Live, and I had a hell of a lot of fun with it back then, but when its shinier brother, 3, came around, I kinda dropped it instantly.

4. Yep, me :P
