Hey guys, I haven't tried any of these yet (a bit busy), but I've looked into them a few years ago and they look like they work pretty well.
Xbox Live Alternatives
Basically what they do is trick your Xbox to think that you are on a local area network with the other people you want to play with, and instead of choosing Xbox Live in Halo 2, you choose System Link. So it's not the Xbox Live network, but that's not doing anybody any good anymore, is it?
I've tried the Xlink Kai before...had trouble getting it to work, but that was like in 2006. Probably simpler now.
Just thought someone might find this helpful, or something.
EDIT:
XBConnect really loves Halo 2. This is their homepage (well, it's a link from their site)
