If I recall, one of Microsoft's justifications for the $50 a year fee was that we could 'play our old games online forever'. Now that the capability has been stripped from us, should we still be paying for Live, especially when free alternatives exist?

Ride The Pony

read the fine print, you can still play your old games, just not on live

  • 04.16.2010 9:03 AM PDT

That's the point.

  • 04.16.2010 9:05 AM PDT

They are not taking away our ability to play xbox 1 games on the 360 altogether only the ability to connect to xbox live with those games. Doing this allows them to do things they have been unable to achieve a true v2 of xbox live as they no longer have to support the legacy of games released 5+ years ago. I for one welcome this change and look forward to the options and possibilities that this opens up. I think in comparison to the other consoles services that xbox live stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of all that is offered for your 4 bucks and change a month fee.

Tank beats everything!!!

Yes but it should be cheaper

  • 04.16.2010 9:09 AM PDT

you do have a point, their whole thing was that we are paying for them to keep our servers active forever. Unlike the playstation network that shutsdown old game servers and reuses them for newer games. But they only shut down the xbox originals you can still play your 360 games forever. When live came out you had to pay 50 bucks and there werent even that many games for it there was like 2 games worth playing on live, now there are hundreds. If anything they should be charging more then 50 to keep them active

I am still yet to hear any benefits of doing this, surely Live is a worse place without Halo 2? More than a hundred friends really? They traded Original Xbox Live for that? Unbelievable

Surely Microsoft could have just rolled out some update to the original xbox live infrastructure back in 2005 to solve this "problem" , yet it seems laziness got the better of them

here is a benefiet for anyone that doesnt know. Xbox originals only supported 100 friends on the friends list limiting it for the new xbox titles.

I'm talking about the ability to play said games online.

i dont know why people are getting so angry at this issue anyway. Everyone is acting all high and mighty like they actually still played the xbox original games over live. it was out of sight out of mind. im about 50% sure that if it wasnt announced publicly noone would even know until someone posted something about it on twitter>> then it got picked up by a game site>> then it was on Fox>> then world news>> then Iraq threatens to bomb every one because it shows the muslim prophet truth<< then halo 2 is no more

  • 04.16.2010 9:15 AM PDT

if anything halo 2 died a while ago and the last 2 days of playing was all a happy memory. Everyone should be happy they even cancled it. Cancling it was the only thing that made everyone realize the consequences of leaving a game. It also gave everyone a chance to relive all the good times. So just be happy it went out with a bang instead of a dwindle like it had done when halo 3 came out

  • 04.16.2010 9:18 AM PDT

I like Call of Duty and Gears of War, AND Halo. Why must everyone else like only one or the other?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I know I would go back and play Xbox1 games online. Every once in a while I would go and load up Halo2 or Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and play online. Now if I want to do that I'll have to go through the hassle of XBC, instead of just loading up the game and signing into Live. And for what? We better get something more than just a bigger friends list, because I know I never had a problem with the 100 friends limit.

  • 04.16.2010 9:28 AM PDT

If you only played Xbox 1 games on Live, you personally should stop paying for it, but I don't think dropping Xbox 1 support should affect the price of Xbox Live.

The whole point of losing support for Xbox Original games is to give MS the freedom they need to improve LIVE for the 360

Personally I won't believe that until such freedoms are listed and explained, for example the 100 friends list cap, surely that could have just been fixed with an update?

Obviously I don't know the details about it personally, but MS better make it worthwhile! I'm not losing Halo 2 for nothing!

Yes, just because Xbox 1 support is gone, that doesn't mean they still cannot charge for the service... LMFAO...

The contract is still active, as the Xbox live is the same now as it was then, You still have to pay to use it, that will never change, and you are ignorant to believe other wise. It is only $50 a year, get over it.

No it couldn't they explained why awhile back.

The reason is because the 100 capped friend list was hard coded into all the xbox 1 games. Therefor no update would be able to increase this limit unless the Xbox 1 service was terminated.

  • 04.16.2010 9:59 AM PDT

why did they hard code it like that in the first place

and WHO CARES

Halo 2. > More than 100 friends

but

All Original Xbox Games > More than 100000 friends.

With all the Xbox 1 games off of XBL, they can now update and improve everything. The old games were holding XBL back from upgrading our friends list and adding new features to the core. If anything, with the improvements that are sure to come from this very soon, I believe we should be paying a little more for XBL.

Chances are that there was something in the original live service code that prevented the use of Natal or some yet undisclosed new "feature". There is no way M$ would do this just to benefit the community (more friends). They don't give a damn about that. Unless there will be significant profit for them, it would have stayed exactly as it was.

LIVE is a service that I am willing to pay for, that's basically all I can say to all of the "Xbox LIVE should be free" posts.

I seriously doubt thats why we have the fee. Only an extremely small portion of players played original xbox games over live, that definitely isn't the soul purpose for charging for live.

Millions of players have shown they don't mind paying the fee. Microsoft isn't going to stop charging just because they took down the servers for original xbox games.

Think of it like updating your computer. When you instal a new OS, sometimes old applications and games will not work right, or at all.

They are upgrading their service. Instead of doing it and having you cry about how your old games don't work, they decided to shut it down first, then upgrade.

[sarcasm]They are horrible people.[/sarcasm]

we pay the fee so they do not shut down our out dated games and turn their servers into new game servers. for example you can still play Perfect Dark Zero over xbox live and thats one of the 360 launch titles. Where as if you wanted to play a PS3 launch title over PSN its been long gone
