I seriously doubt thats why we have the fee. Only an extremely small portion of players played original xbox games over live, that definitely isn't the soul purpose for charging for live.

Millions of players have shown they don't mind paying the fee. Microsoft isn't going to stop charging just because they took down the servers for original xbox games.

we pay the fee so they do not shut down our out dated games and turn their servers into new game servers. for example you can still play Perfect Dark Zero over xbox live and thats one of the 360 launch titles. Where as if you wanted to play a PS3 launch title over PSN its been long gone

This.

DOES THIS MEAN HALO 3 IS MADE BY BUNGIE?!?

There's some excellent points here. Microsoft, I'm sure, has something in the contract about shutting off current generation games. I, for one, am surprised that they shut down the original servers so late. There was such a minute portion playing them, even for Halo 2. A great deal of people are acting holier than thou, but they had maybe played one game of Halo 2 in the last year.

Compare the average of about 2000 a day for Halo 2 (pre-shutdown bonanza) to the 400,000 simultaneous players that Halo 3 and Modern Warfare 2 pull in. That means they're running servers, losing power, money, etc. for a game that they haven't seen much revenue from in years. I'm really sad that we lost a ton of fun online games, but it had to be done eventually. Functionality is more important to me than games I can play with a workaround.

Except for the fact they weren't loosing money on those servers, because that's what we've been paying $50 a year for. The whole reason live had a subscription fee in the first place was so that it kept all the older game's live servers up.

WRONG. you pay the fee so they can maintain all servers, and have the money to update them, and do whatever they wish to the LIVE service. Try reading the TOU, and all that other fine print for a change. They have every right to turn off the old servers, and continue to improve the current generation of games, and services. You pay the fee, to play on Xbox Live, not to stop old games from becoming what they have been for some time, obsolete. Yea, sure I miss Halo 2, but its demise was inevitable.

In the end, like Bungie says, "You have no rights Play Nice" Microsoft can charge what they want for the XBL service, and that, will never change.

I'm just curious on how turning off access to XB1 games would allow for new updates. When you play the old games, you can't access the dashboard, so couldn't you keep that as an old system and make improvements to the Xbox 360 system? Programming wise, couldn't that just be an if statement to determine whether you're playing an XB1 game or XB360 game? If it is a 360 issue, isn't that just another if statement where there are only 3 possibilities? XB1 game played on XB360, XB360 game played on XB360, XB1 game played on XB1?

E4web

Here's what I think. Please tell me what you think.

The Gateway checks if you're an old XBox/emulator client and redirects you to the old XBox LIVE servers which have been set aside for original games. If you're a 360 client, you get all the new fancy stuff that they said they will deliver.

Come to think of it, the 360 could just be patched to talk to new servers, whilst the old XBox LIVE is left in place for the old clients. The old clients would still think they were talking to XBox LIVE in both cases, so what's stopping a suggestion like this from coming to fruition? Surely they considered something like this?

They shouldn't, but they will do so anyway.

I am still yet to hear any benefits of doing this, surely Live is a worse place without Halo 2? More than a hundred friends really? They traded Original Xbox Live for that? Unbelievable

Surely Microsoft could have just rolled out some update to the original xbox live infrastructure back in 2005 to solve this "problem" , yet it seems laziness got the better of them

It's not the infrastructure, it's the games. On Xbox 360 the console OS pulls your data from the Xbox Live master servers, so they can update it all they like and no game is affected.

On Xbox 1, the game its self is hard coded to pull up your Xbox Live data. These games are designed to only pull 100 friends. If you had more, the game would crash. To fix this, every single Xbox 1 game with XBL support would need to have been patched and hard coded to receive the information.

No developer would justify patching an old game that only a dozen people (not including Halo 2 here) play anymore.

Lies, I still play the first Resistance game online.

Yes, because the service is much more than just playing old titles on it. And if you think you're paying to keep support for games on the previous console I don't think you really know what you are paying for.

  • 04.16.2010 12:39 PM PDT

Would it not be possible for Microsoft to run a Ye Olde Xbox LIVE service parallel, but not equal to, our current one? Switch the old Xbox games over to a different, smaller service? Isolate them on an older version, and upgrade the current one?

EDIT: Like Ghost Unknown said.

A Halo 2 Glitch Master, "retired" since i couldn't find anything good in Halo 3, hoping for a come back. I'm a huge Marathon fan too. If you want to verse me, please message me through my Bungie.net profile.
My weapon of choice is the warthog (Driving); I'm one of the best drivers out there, so if i get my hand on a vehicle, you're going to wish i hadn't XD

April 20th I became one of the final 30 people to play Halo 2 online. Unfortunately I was kicked by Microsoft that day.

quite frankley i want a reduction in price...halo 2 is the majority of what I play

Why not have a feature where people who want to play Original Xbox titles remain with 100 friends, and those who don't can have more?

  • 04.16.2010 12:57 PM PDT

Yes, because they still provide a quality service for online gaming.

Halo 2 for Life!

I think not, but they will anyways.
