An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

Intro:

'They're coming in through the door', shouted Captain James Foley,'Get ready'.

James and six other marines with four NMPD officers and seven civilians had barricaded themselves in an old supermarket. James's marines were stationed in New Mombassa when the Covenant ship appeared in the sky above them. They immediately grabbed any weapon they could get their hands on and made their way to their rally point.

That was over an hour ago and all that showed up were the few police officers and the seven civilians. However they were very well armed with several MA5 assault rifles, three M90 shotguns, four SRS99 sniper rifles, one M6 pistol for everyone in the group and they even had a M19 Rocket Launcher.

Now on the outskirts of the city, the Covenant were trying to break in.

The noise from outside the door stopped and one of the civilians walked towards it. A marine pulled him back but it was too late. The door exploded inwards into both the Marine and the Civilian, killing both instantly.

The Covenant followed up with two plasma grenades, each of which landed in the centre of the two groups Captain Foley split his group into. James jumped but was still caught by the blast and flung into a nearby wall.

James barely conscious looked around. He saw two Elites walk into the room, both wielding swords. One picked up a human survivor and ran him through with the sword. The other walked towards James.

Behind the advancing Elite, James could see four Brutes enter the room, one with a hammer. The Brute Chieftain ran up behind the advancing Elite and smashed him with the hammer, sending the now mangled Elite into James.

The force of the impact crushed the Captain against the floor. The last thing he saw before he blacked out was the other Elite fall under a storm of spikes.

SECTION I New Mombassa

Part 1.

James woke to the sound of gunfire and a scream of a now dead Brute. He pushed the Elite off him and grabbed a nearby Pistol in time to shoot the remaining Brute. Two Marines appeared from behind a wall of rubble.

'Who are you?' asked one Marine.

'Captain James Foley', came the reply, 'Who are you?'

'I'm Major Paul Wilson and this is PFC Yuri Zhircov, We were separated from the rest of our group about a mile back. What happened here?'

'The Brutes attacked the Elites, after that I don't know'.

'Alright Foley, we have to keep moving'

The three marines left the building and proceeded up the street. Then the ground shuck. A Scarab appeared further down the street and crushed a building with one of its giant legs. The Marines fired rockets but the hardly even scratched the giant Covenant vehicle.

They did however attract the attention of two Ghosts that were under the Scarab. The three marines reloaded their Rocket Launchers and fired three, than six rockets at the vehicles. The Ghosts exploded in a ball of bright orange and blue fire as the rockets found their targets. Major Wilson then sent Yuri back to the supermarket to get more rockets while he and Captain Foley secured a perimeter around the entrance. When Yuri returned the three again set off.

'So Major, where are we going?' asked James.

'There's another rally point at the ONI building near the city centre', explained Wilson, 'but it's too far to travel on foot so were going to a UNSC vehicle depot that's near here'.

The marines rounded a corner and practically walked into a Covenant patrol made up of several grunts and a Brute. Both sides looked at each other in shock, but the humans were first to respond and opened up on the Brute with their MA5s. The Brute fell under the hail of bullets and the Grunts panicked, one setting off a plasma grenade and killing himself and four other Grunts. The last Grunt curled into a ball and was finished off by Wilson's Assault Rifle. The marines collected some plasma grenades and even a spike grenade before continuing onwards.

After half an hour and two scuffles with the Covenant later, the marines reached the depot. They found one remaining Warthog and jumped in; Wilson at the wheel, Yuri riding shotgun and James on the turret. Wilson brought the Warthog out the exit and drove off towards the highway.

Part 2.

Wilson brought the Warthog out of the tunnel and tore down the road towards the unsuspecting group of Elites. James brought the turret around while Yuri aimed his Rocket. They both opened fire at the same time killing all four Elites. But then a Wraith appeared and opened fire with both its turret and mortar. The marines bailed as the mortar hit and were flung in three different directions.

James and Wilson, who landed on the same side of the road, regrouped behind a broken wall. Yuri however had no cover. He managed to fire two rockets at the tank before the plasma turret ripped him apart. Both rockets were direct hits on the tank but it still managed to turn to face Wilson and James. Wilson threw his plasma grenade and watched as it stuck onto the tank and exploded with the tank.

Wilson ran over to Yuri's burnt body but it was too late.

'Dam, he's dead'.

James surveyed the street. He saw several dead Elites and Brutes littered around the place. That confirmed his thoughts; something had happened in the Covenant and they were now fighting against each other. He looked up at the door at the end of the road and saw Tayari Plaza written on it.

Wilson got up and told Captain Foley to follow him. James complied and they proceeded down the street.

'Hey, wait up a second', shouted James.

'What', shouted the Major in response, however he didn't get a reply and instead followed James's gaze and saw the problem. The Covenant carrier that was present and unmoving above the city for the last two hours was now rapidly accelerating. The air in front of the carrier tore open to form a pulsing blue circle shape. The carrier sped through and disappeared while the rift behind it violently compressed and exploded outwards creating a tidal wave of energy that moved outwards in all directions through the city.

'GET DOWN', Wilson cried before hitting the deck himself and barely avoiding the destroyed Wraith that flew through the space he had previously occupied. James also jumped down as a burnt out car flew through the air near him.

After the energy wave passed both marines got back up and proceeded towards the door marked Tayari Plaza. The door automatically opened up just before they reached it and four marines steeped out.

'Hey guys, do you have any idea about what the hell just happened', asked one of the marines.

Thanks Heres part 3
Part 3.

The group split into two, Wilson and James being the ranking officers each took command of one of the three man groups. The groups moved out of Tayari plaza and through a building marked ASKLON to avoid a large Covenant force in the area outside.

That's when the drop pod came down. Wilson was the first to see the drop pod as it smashed off a building and disappeared under the rooftops. The drop pod also caught the attention of the covenant who stopped what they were doing to look at it. This gave Wilson and the marines a chance to make a run for the door at the end of the street. The marines ran through it and state into a battle raging between Elites and Brutes.

Two marines were forced back through the door due to fire from a sniper tower but the rest kept running and made it around the fight. They ran into an open building but Wilson stopped them going any further.

'There's a battle going on outside between Elites and Brutes, I don't know why but I sure as hell want to', no one could argue with Wilson so the remaining four marines watched the battle from an open window.

They watched while the Brutes and the Elites killed each other. The Brutes outnumbered the Elites by around five to one but the Elites refused to give up and for each one killed they took the lives of three Brutes. The Elites looked like they had a certain victory and would have survived if it wasn't for several shielded Jackals that came running down the street to back up the Brutes.

The Jackals formed an unbreakable wall with their shields and began firing through the gaps. The Elites began to fall and it wasn't long before a number of Jackal snipers guaranteed their fate. As the last Elite dropped dead a squad of Grunts jumped out of a Phantom dropship and took up positions around the sniper tower.

The marines turned around to find that a Jackal had sneaked up behind them. Luckily the Jackal wasn't yet prepared for them and a few well placed shots from one marine's SMG put him down for good. This however alerted toe Brutes outside who almost instantly began running towards the entrance to the building.

The marines began running as the brute entered the building. They were chased down the narrow corridors until inevitably the Brutes caught up. The lead Brute grabbed one of the marines and ripped him apart while the other started firing his spiker. James grabbed his shotgun and fired two rounds into the lead Brutes chest. The second Brute was finished off with assault rifle fire from the third marine.

'Major, we never really introduced ourselves before', mentioned the marine, 'The names Adam Smith.'

Adam put out his hand and Wilson shook it.

Part 4.

'So Major, what's our plan?' asked Adam.

'We're heading for the ONI building near Kizingo Boulevard', Wilson explained, 'Do you have any idea where it is?'

'Directly east, that's where me and my squad were going before the flash'.

James knew that the ONI building was the last rally point in the city but he was still a bit anxious about going near there, especially with all the ONI spooks that would inevitably be around.

The squad proceeded slowly into the next section of the city. They kept noise to a minimum in case one of the sharp eared Jackal snipers on the rooftops heard them. It wasn't long before they saw a Covenant patrol advancing down the street towards them. The patrol was a large one, two Brutes, several Grunts, three shielded Jackals and even a Ghost bringing up the rear.

James watched as Wilson signalled for them to get down. The three marines got down and slowly crawled towards the remains of a Scorpion tank. As the patrol got closer James was praying that they blended in with the dead marines and rubble around them. They finally reached the tank with the patrol just twenty meters away. Even if the patrol didn't finish off the marines the Jackals on the rooftops could snipe them with ease.

The Covenant patrol was now on the other side of the tank. The Brutes had trailed behind and were walking beside the Ghost. As the patrol came towards the end of the tank, the three marines crawled to the tanks rear.

Then the wind changed direction.

The wind blew towards them and the Brutes, dragging their smell with it. The Brutes immediately tensed up and the Brute clearly in command sent the patrol on its way. The Brute then moved towards the marines hiding spot. It was then James noticed Adam was missing, however he had no time to ponder this as the Brute roared due to its finding of the marines hiding place.

The Brute picked James up before they had a chance to fire, blocking Wilson's shot. But then the Brute dropped James as Adam jumped on its back and plunged his knife into its neck. The Brute dropped silently as Adam pulled his knife back out and shacked the blood off it. Adam put out his hand and James took it as Adam pulled him up.

'We have to keep moving, the Covenant will return once they realise their leader hasn't returned', commented Wilson before adding quietly to James, 'watch that man, he's clearly not the average marine if he's able to sneak of and kill a brute like that'.

James just nodded in response.

Part 5.

The marines continued towards the ONI building, Wilson leading, followed closely by James. Adam was trailing by ten meters. They finally rounded a corner to see an Elite on top of a huge vehicle.

Wilson quickly stopped and crouched behind an abandoned car. He quickly motioned to James and Adam to stay back. They quickly retreated around the corner as Wilson peeked over the car roof and looked at the Elite, who fortunately hadn't noticed his potential killers.

Wilson checked his weapons. He was running low of ammunition for his assault rifle with only a clip and a half left including the clip currently in the MA5B. He however had a plentiful supply for his powerful M6 pistol. He considered his options, he could quickly finish off the Elite with his MA5, this however would reduce his ammo almost fully, or he could use his pistol and hope the Elites shields weren't activated.

He chose the latter as the assault rifle might come in useful later. He edged out of his hiding place and aimed the pistol carefully towards the Elites head, the Elite unexpectedly moved as it crouched down to examine something on top of the huge vehicle. Wilson adjusted his aim and quickly fired two shots, the first smashing into the Elites armoured head and the second lodging itself in the alien's brain.

The Sangheli Narr 'Offiken saw his brother fall. After learning of the Prophets lies and the death of many of his family in the Human Covenant war and the Covenant civil war he didn't think he could bear the dishonour of having any more of his kin fall in his presence.

Wilson stood up and moved around the car. He examined the vehicle, which looked like an Elephant troop transport, and realised that it was actually a dump truck.

Narr 'Offiken activated his energy sword and waited for the human to turn its back. The human turned away and he lunged forward grabbing the Human by its throat.

Wilson failed to consider that the alien might not be alone and was momentarily stunned when a sword wielding Elite jumped over the car and grabbed Wilson by the throat. James and Adam rushed around the corner, weapons at the ready but couldn't get a clear shot.

Narr wanted the Human to suffer and when the other two Humans rounded the corner, the young Sangheli major found out how he could make that happen. He would let the new Humans kill one of their own. He powered down his energy sword and replaced it with his Plasma Rifle. He would restore at least some lost honour this day.

Wilson felt the Elite tighten its grip and watched as it replaced its sword with its Plasma Rifle. He knew what James and Adam had to survive but he doubted they would.

James knew that he had to shoot through Wilson to kill the Elite but he couldn't bring himself to doing it. James had never killed another Human even though he grew up during the UNSC's war against the Insurrection. He had even watched as his own father died at his feet due to an Innie bomb but still couldn't bring himself to kill any Human Insurrectionists even thought he had plenty of opportunities. The Covenant were a different matter altogether. They killed any human they could find and for that James joined the UNSC.

Narr aimed at the Human on the right. He began firing but the Human evaded by jumping back behind a car.

James watched as the alien aimed at him and jumped behind a nearby car, barely evading the plasma shots the charred the wall behind where he was just standing. He watched as Adam retreated to cover on the other side of the street.

Sergeant Major Sarah Byrne was an ODST that had dropped directly into Rally Point Alpha outside the New Mombassa ONI building after the Covenant Carrier slipped away from the city. Almost immediately she had been given a mission to capture an Elite, if there were any still surviving in the city. When she asked why, she was given the typical ONI response, 'That's Classified.'

When Narr saw the Humans retreat it confirmed his thoughts about the species, they were weak, scared and undisciplined. He fired two shots from his Plasma Rifle up into the air and bellowed a war cry.

Sarah was alerted to the presence of an elite before she saw it. She watched as two plasma shots were fired into the air and heard an Elite roar. She then saw two Humans taking cover in different locations and finally she saw the Elite with its hand around a Humans neck. She readied her silenced SRS99 and prepared to fire at the alien.

Wilson began struggling, hoping to weaken the Elites grip so he could get a gasp of air. He managed to get a small gasp before the Elite tightened its grip again. He heard a thump from near him and was surprised when the Elite dropped him. He landed on his knees and turned around to see the Elite lying face up on the ground behind him with a gaping hole in its shoulder.

Narr felt the Human struggle and tightened his grip. He looked around for his prey and was surprised when he felt a jolt of pain in his shoulder as he was knocked backwards. The pain in his shoulder was replaced with a numbness as the Elite blacked out.

Part 6.

James pulled Wilson up as the ODST, who shot the Elite, walked down the street towards them. Wilson stood up and looked at the Elite that nearly killed him. He saw that the Elites arm had almost been separated from its body at the shoulder. He noticed the Elite's chest move and pulled out his pistol to finish off the Elite. Wilson aimed the barrel of his gun towards the Elites brain and was about to pull the trigger when a bullet smashed into his gun, rendering it useless and breaking his wrist. He cried out in pain and saw that it was the ODST who took the shot.

James saw the ODST draw her sniper rifle, aim and shoot in the one motion. He quickly turned and saw that the bullet was aimed at Wilson. James pulled out his MA5 and aimed it at the ODST's head. Quickly looking around, James saw that Adam had done likewise.

'What the Hell did you do that for?' James shouted at the ODST while keeping his weapon aimed at her.

'He was going to kill the Elite', Sarah shouted back.

'So, that Elite would kill any of us if it got the chance, why would you want it alive?'

'ONI sent me on a mission to capture a living Elite, if I didn't shoot him I'd have to find another Elite'.

'That still doesn't make for shooting Wilson,' said James as he lowered his weapon and went to help Wilson.

Sarah made Adam help her lift the unconscious Elite and put it on a portable stretcher while James tended to Wilson's broken wrists. Wilson would be fine but wouldn't be able to hold a weapon for some time.

The group set off for Rally Point Alpha, Adam and James carrying the stretcher while Sarah scouted ahead. Wilson stayed with Adam and James as he couldn't hold a weapon. Wilson was instead burdened with the Elites weapons which were put in his bag.

After a twenty minute walk without any interferences from the Covenant the group made it to the entrance to Kizingo Boulevard and the ONI building beyond. Several marines were on top of a raised platform. They all had assault rifles but had a mixture of rocket launchers and sniper rifles as secondary weapons.

The marines got to the huge door that separated them from the rally point just as they heard the trademark screech of a Banshee. From over the top of a building came two Banshees and a Phantom. The marines on the platform opened up at the same time and the crack of sniper rifles could be heard. A rocket impacted on one of the Banshees and it burst into a ball of blue fire. The other banshee however managed to fire with its fuel rod cannon and the shot came down on the platform, killing two marines and severely burning another.

The Phantom managed to drop several Brutes and Jackals before taking off again. At that moment a F99 Wombat drone flew over head and fired a missile at the Phantom, hitting an engine. The Phantom swerved in the air and suddenly accelerated, crashing into a building.

The Jackals began advancing towards the platform with their shields overlapping to form an unbreakable wall. The Brutes activated their jetpacks and split into two groups, one flying up to attack the platform and the other attacking Wilson's group.

Sarah opened fire with her sniper rifle and two Brutes fell out of the air. She then swapped to her M90 shotgun and shot a Brute that landed in front of her. James and Adam dropped the Elite and began firing at the Brutes that landed in front of them. The Brutes died quickly but the marines on the platform weren't so lucky. Already four of them had died and three more had serious injuries. Sarah fired her sniper rifle and the attacking Brutes quickly fell. The Jackals however were a much more serious problem and Sarah couldn't get any of her shots to hit. But then another F99 flew overhead and launched a missile into the crowd of Jackals, killing them all.

The door behind James opened as two men walked out.

Part 7.

'Sergeant Major, I see you found us an Elite. Good work', said one of the men.

'Thank you commander,' replied the ODST, 'one of these men has a broken wrist, I would suggest getting him medical treatment immediately.'

'Of course,' said the commander who then turned to Adam and said, 'Lieutenant, how did your mission go?'

James had been wondering who Adam was but now he was sure he was ONI.

'Me and my squad only came across one of the engineers before the flash. That's when we ran into these two marines,' said Adam pointing at James and Wilson. The commander motioned for them to walk with him as he walked towards the huge ONI building. Adam recalled the events from after he came across James and Wilson.

James saw that the Elite was being moved inside the building by four other marines. As James looked around he saw that the rally point was full of marines and ODSTs who were erecting huge barriers and other jobs. James also saw several Pelican dropships and two scorpion tanks.

The commander called a medic over and sent Wilson off with him. James looked at the ODST that was walking beside him and realised that he knew nothing about her. He didn't even know her name. He then thought about Wilson and Adam and found that he knew practically nothing about them either.

The marines were led under the building through a tunnel. The commander brought them to a Warthog and told them to get in. Adam got in the side seat while James and the ODST got into the rear. The commander drove the Warthog out of the tunnel and across a bridge leading to the ONI building at the other side. When they reached the ONI building, the commander parked the Warthog and told the marines to follow him into the building. He led them into an elevator at the bottom of the building and brought them to the third floor. He told them to wait in a room outside a small office and told them that he would speak to them individually, starting with Adam.

James sat down on a chair at one side of the room and saw the ODST sit down on the opposite side of the room. James saw her take off her helmet and reveal her grey eyes and short brown hair. After around two minutes Adam came out. Sergeant Major Sarah Byrne come in please came a voice from over the intercom. James saw the ODST stand up and walk into the interview room. Now James knew at least something about her.

After another short wait the ODST came out and told James to go in. James got up and walked into the office.

'Take a seat marine', said the commander, pointing at a chair on the James's side of the desk. When he saw James sit down he continued, 'I'm Commander Ronald White and I am in charge of the defence of New Mombassa. Now marine, tell me a bit about yourself starting with your name.'

James told him his name and mentioned that he had grown up on Reach during the time of the insurrection.

'Now Captain, Lieutenant Smith lost his squad as you know. He is forming a new squad of the best soldiers he can find and he wants to know if you'll be part of it. It will be dangerous but he's sure you're up to the challenge. What do you say marine?'

James thought about it for a while. He didn't consider himself to be an exceptional soldier, not to mention he didn't trust ONI. He however agreed as he knew Adam was a great marine.

'Good Captain. Your part of Alpha squad now.'

Commander White sent James out to Adam and Sarah and told them to go to the armoury and meet the rest of their squad.

Part 8.

James arrived at ONI's armoury. The first section he was brought through was nothing special, just rows and rows of standard issue UNSC weapons and gear. However Adam brought James beyond that section into a smaller but more noticeable room. James saw a type of assault rifle he had never seen before marked MA5K. It was a hugely cut down version of the standard issue MA5. James also saw several BR55s.

One side of the room was full of weapon parts, silencers, scopes, even motion trackers. In the centre of the room there were several open crates of different types of bullets, armour piercing and shredder rounds being only two. James then noticed two other marines in the room. Adam brought him and Sarah over to them.

'ONI is being kind and is giving us a simple mission to get used to each other,' said the Lieutenant to the four marines, 'We have to help some very important people that have been pinned down near ASKLON's HQ in the city. They're about two clicks west. Everyone understand?'

He waited and continued once everyone had acknowledged him before continuing, 'Good. Now everyone except Sarah here is to bring MA5Ks. Get a silencer for it over on the left side of this room.'

'Sarah, you're our sniper. Get an S2 AM, light and sound suppressed. From now on you're to be known as 'Scope'. If anyone calls you anything else while out on a mission I will personally cut out their tongue.'

Adam then turned to one of the other marines, 'This is Vladimir Gorbacheve. He's our explosives expert. For this mission we hopefully won't need any but just to be on the safe side I want you to bring two cans of C-12. You're to be called 'Ukranian'. Same goes for him, if anyone calls him anything but Ukranian, I will cut their tongues out.'

Adam faced the other marine, 'Erik, you're our scout. To keep things simple we will just call you scout. Same goes for him as for the other two.'

Adam finally turned towards James. 'And finally we have James Foley. He's second in command so if anything happens to my, or if I'm just not around, James is in charge. He is to be called 'Survivor' from now on.'

'Everyone get your weapons, you can take any secondary you want. Remember to take at least six clips of ammo for each gun you have. You have five minutes.'

James immediately went to one of the racks of weapons and picked up his MA5K. He then got his silencer. He decided to bring three clips of armour piercing rounds as well as three clips of normal rounds and two clips of shredder rounds. He then went over too a row full of side arms. James then noticed some DMRs out of the corner of his eye. Even though they were old weapons, James found them very useful fighting the Covenant at the start of the war. James took four spare clips for the weapon and waited for Adams return.

Adam looked at James's DMR when he returned but didn't say anything. 'Any questions?' he asked.

'Sir, what do we called you?' asked the marine called Erik.

'Assassin,' came the reply, 'Welcome to Alpha squad marines, now lets go.'

The marines followed the Lieutenant out of the ONI building and to a waiting Pelican near the entrance.

'I hope none of you get sick flying,' commented Assassin.

SECTION II: Alpha Squad.

Part 9.

//> 3/10/2058 0224hours, Delta Force Team Two base, on the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Corporal John Owen was woken abruptly. He opened his eyes and saw Captain Dunne kneeling beside him. Captain Dunne was in command of Delta Force team two for this mission.

'Corporal could I have a word with you please,' said the Captain who then added, 'In private.' John got up and followed the Captain to the command tent. Looking around he saw the four sentries who had drawn lookout for the early morning shift.

Delta Force had been deployed to Afghanistan three days earlier and were to make their way up the mountains and into Tajikistan. Heavily armed terrorists had ambushed a Russian convey carrying four Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles and had brought them into Tajikistan where they could launch the missiles anywhere in the world. This was nine days ago giving the terrorists plenty of time to prepare the missiles for launch. This mission was a joint operation between Delta Force, the British SAS and the Russian Spetznaz.

The two soldiers entered the command tent.

'Corporal, your to listen carefully and don't say anything. I'm putting you into Bravo team for the mission tomorrow. The reason I'm moving you is because I trust you. Earlier today it was confirmed that there is a traitor in this team, that's how these terrorists we're after are putting up such a strong resistance. They know where we are all the time. I'm putting everyone I trust into Bravo and Gamma teams tomorrow. Do you understand Corporal?'

'Sir, yes sir!' replied John.

'That's good,' continued the Captain, 'I'm putting you in charge of Bravo team for the rest of this mission. Now there's something else I need to tell you. The Russian missiles these terrorists stole are prototypes. They are potentially the most effective nukes ever made. The Russians didn't tell us much but what they did tell us is this, the missiles have a range of twenty thousand kilometres and a fly at seven thousand kilometres per hour. This means they can hit any city in the world and they're too fast to shoot down. If we fail tomorrow, the whole world will be at their mercy.'

***

John checked his HK416 and saw that it was fully loaded. They were just after another battle with the terrorists however due to the superior training of Delta Force they had emerged from each battle taking little or no losses. Their luck would eventually turn as they now had lost four men in the six skirmishes.

John turned to his seven remaining squad mates and told them it was time to move on again. Before they left he went to the latest KIA and retrieved his dog tags from around his neck. He then followed the rest of his squad down the mountain path. Gamma team was leading the way, followed by Bravo team and finally, the untrusted Alpha team.

After twenty minutes without a battle, John began to worry. He was wondering why he had not seen any signs of the enemy, especially after the scuffles that took place almost every five minutes back up the mountain. Five minutes later, Johns scout appeared running up the mountain path. He was out of breath by the time he reached John.

'Corporal, sir,' the soldier said before taking a breath, 'Gamma squad, they're all dead.'

'Are you sure,' replied John.

'Yeah, they're round fifty metres into that forest. Looks like they were ambushed.'

John alerted the rest of his squad and then attempted to reach Captain Dunne on the radio however all he heard was static. They continued on carefully, watching for signs of ambushers. When they reached the ambush site John ordered his squad to set up a parameter while he collected the dog tags from the dead soldiers. The soldiers then set out again.

They exited the forest and found themselves looking at a long fence. John saw four auto turrets as well as at least twenty well armed terrorists. A huge building in the centre where the missiles would be launched from was their target. Several fenced off areas within the compound contained the ICBMs, all ready to launch. There were also two dogs with every group of soldiers.

John took out a device that would set off an EMP that would disrupt all cameras and auto turrets in a two hundred metre area. He activated the device and threw it into the compound and then he and his team proceeded to cut open the fence. They stormed the complex and quickly neutralized the guards with bursts from their silenced HK416 assault rifles. They burst into the building and killed anyone they saw. After a few minutes fighting they located the control room. They burst threw the door and killed everyone inside.

'Corporal, the SAS have sent a message,' shouted the communications officer from across the room.

'Play it.'

To all Delta Force personnel inside the complex, evacuate now. The Russians are going to cluster bomb the complex. Evacuate now.

John and his squad ran outside the room and downstairs towards the exit. Just as they were about to reach the door out, Captain Dunne and his squad ran in through their exit. Alpha team aimed their weapons at Bravo team and opened fire, killing most of Bravo team. John was one of the few survivors. He saw Captain Dunne walk over to him and look down at him.

'We would have succeeded if those Russians didn't change their plan at the last minute,' said the Captain before the bombs fell, ripping through the complex.

>>Admiral, after reviewing the Delta Force incident in 2058 I have found the main causes of the event. Delta Force was not a secrete. People knew of its existence which resulted in its eventual downfall. The terrorist group involved in the incident was able to infiltrate Delta Force.

This must not happen again. I therefore propose we set up four small squads, Alpha, Bravo, Gamma and Delta. Once you become a member of one of these squads you cannot leave. These squads must be kept secrete from the public at all costs. We must learn from the past and I believe that this may be a solution to our problems on Mars and Jupiter's moons.

Part 10.

\\> New Mombassa, October 20th 2552, 1723hours.

The Pelican rose into the air. Adam sent James to the co-pilot seat so James could hopefully learn something about flying. Looking out the window, James could see the raging battle taking place all over the city. From up where James was it didn't look like a single street was untouched by the fighting. Thick, black pillars of smoke rose up into the air from various sites around the city. As the Pelican flew overhead, James could see a line of Scorpion tanks, rolling down a street towards the Covenant. The pilot swerved the pelican around a building and James saw that a Phantom had crashed into one of the upper floors.

The pilot let James take over the Pelicans controls. James tried to fly in a straight line but it was noticeably bumpier and swayed from side to side. James relinquished control of the Pelican back to the pilot and went to join the rest of Alpha squad.

'Five minutes', said the pilot over the intercom. With that Adam ordered his group to check their weapons. James took out his spare clips and checked that all the bullets were in them correctly. He found that they were all perfect except for one clip that had a crack down one side. He emptied the DMR clip and carefully put away the ten bullets.

'Sixty seconds', shouted the Pilot over the intercom. The Pelican kept moving forward but after around forty seconds it stopped abruptly. James felt his stomach lurch as the Pelican stopped and began to lower down into the city. The Pelican again stopped and the door at the end slowly opened.

'Go, go, go', shouted the Lieutenant once the doors opened fully. Alpha Squad ran out of the Pelican and jumped the small drop between the pelican and the ground. Here, outside the modern city centre, the road was mainly made up of dust, sand and earth. The houses weren't in much better shape either, being just bare rectangles made from brick. The houses were also flat roofed. It was hard to believe that this was what people lived in so close to the ONI building and ASKLON's HQ. When the Pelican again took off again, it caused a whirlwind of dust and sand to rise in the street which died down as quickly as it started.

'Scout, Scope, move up ahead of us. Stick to the rooftops,' Commanded Assassin.

Sarah and Erik ran towards a row of houses and by using a car that was parked adjacent to the house, they were able to climb onto the top of the houses. They both crouched down and Scope took out her sniper rifle. James followed their eyes and saw three figures on a rooftop around half a mile away. Just as quickly as James spotted them, they disappeared as three silent shots flew through the air hitting each of the three figures in the head.

Scout turned around and immediately lay down flat, pulling Scope with him. They were both out of view from the road. James turned around to see why and saw seven Ghosts racing up the road towards them. Ukranian had already pulled out his C-12 and was spraying it across the road. Assassin pulled James inside a house as Ukranian emptied his first can. Ukranian then pulled the top off his second can and poured all of it in one lump in the centre of the road.

He finished just as the Ghosts began to open fire, Russian ran towards Survivor and Assassin but was hit as a plasma bolt hit him on the arm and singed through his armour. He slowed and another plasma bolt hit him in the chest, again burning through his ballistic armour. Ukranian fell as the Ghosts swarmed up around Assassin's and Survivor's house. James saw Russian pull a grenade from his belt and pull the pin. The Ghosts then opened fire at the house. James pulled back from the window as the Ghosts forced him and Assassin back further into the house.

Ukranian's grenade exploded causing the C-12 to go off with it, incinerating all of the Ghosts and destroying sections of the nearby houses. Survivor and Assassin were pushed back with the force of the blast and smashed into a wall at the back of the house. James blacked out for the second time that day.

***

James woke to find Adam shacking him. Adam was shouting something but James could only hear bells ringing in his ears.

'Can you hear me?' shouted Adam and this time James could.

'Yeah,' responded James, 'How long-'

'Around five minutes, now get up, we have to finish this mission.'

Adam helped James up and they both went outside. James saw that all that survived of the house was the back wall he was flung against. As he stepped over the debris he saw how lucky he and Adam were that the roof hadn't collapsed on them. However the building Sarah and Erik were on had vanished. All that was left of it were the piles of rubble scattered around. James and Adam looked through the debris for a while but after failing to find any sign of Sarah or Erik, they gave up and decided that they must have survived.

Adam tried to reach Scope and Scout over the radio but it had been badly damaged during the explosion. After another few minutes searching, Adam and James continued towards the target building.

***

Sarah jumped just as the grenade detonated. She was still caught by the blast and was sent flying across the lines of houses. Sarah smashed down on the roof of a different row of houses nearly ten meters away. She tasted blood in her mouth and spat a giant red blob of blood onto the roof. She checked that nothing was broken but then noticed that she had lost the SMG she had taken as a sidearm back at the ONI building. After reloading her S2 AM sniper rifle and removing the damaged silencer, Sarah looked around for her squad mates.

Sarah found Erik thrown even further away than she had been. He was conscious but had a gaping hole in his armour. Inside that hole was a mess of flesh and metal. Sarah took her can of biofoam and filled Erik's wound using almost half the can. Erik grunted with pain but sighed with relief as the pain was replaced with numbness. Erik then attempted to stand and finding that he could walk, he and Sarah decided to continue on towards the ASKLON building in the hope that they would find James, Adam and Vladimir.

An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

Part 11.

\\>New Mombassa, October 20th, 2552, 1806hours.

'Dam Covenant are crawling all over that place, how could anyone survive.'

'I don't know Survivor but we still have to get in there and find those people.'

'Who are these people anyway?'

'ASKLON's owners. ONI sent several groups to help them. As far as I know, they're all still pinned down inside.'

Assassin and Survivor had arrived at ASKLON's headquarters several minutes earlier. They had ascended three levels up the building to get a good vantage point of the target building, a nine story apartment fifty meters away. The room they were now in was littered with bodies, both Human and Covenant. Assassin replaced his radio with one from a dead marine.

'Commander White come in, over,' Assassin called into the microphone, 'Commander, please respond.'

This is Commander White, go ahead over.

'This is Alpha one, we have one KIA and two MIAs. We need reinforcements NOW.'

Calm down, Alpha one. Where are you, over.

'I'm in the ASKLON building, third floor. Target building is hot, at least fifty infantry and two tanks. I don't even know if the VIPs are still alive.'

Understood. VIPs are alive but are taking losses. Now we have our own problems here, Covenant forces are attempting to swarm the building. I'll try to send out what I can but I'm not making any promises that you'll get any help, over.

'Come on Survivor, we have to hurry if were going to get them,' commented Adam, who stood up and readied his MA5K.

They made their way to the stairs and ran down them. They both stopped at the exit and Adam stuck his head out to see if there were any Covenant lurking around the street. The quality of the roads had noticeably improved as they neared the city centre again. The two marines again stopped as they neared the target building.

'James, listen carefully. I want you to get onto that building and shoot the Covenant from long range while I try to sneak around them. If I get in, I'll make sure that whoever the hell is inside comes out and shoots these Covenant in the backs,' said Adam who then added, 'Try not to die.'

With that Adam ran off down the street. James ran to the building Adam had pointed out. James got into the house and quickly ran upstairs jumping over a damaged step. At the top of the stairs, James stopped to consider what could have damaged the broken step. He almost instantly got his answer as he heard a growl of a Brute from somewhere above him. James instinctively crouched down and proceeded slowly and quietly outside the house onto the second floor balcony.

On the balcony James saw a ladder leading up onto the roof and started crawling towards it. Suddenly James felt his hand touch something slippery and wet. James looked down to see his hand on what looked like a person's leg bone. He looked around the rest of the balcony and saw more remains of humans scattered around. He looked down at the bone again and to his horror found bite marks into the bone.

James now filled with rage, got up and started climbing the ladder. He got to top and pulled himself onto the roof to find two Brutes fighting over a child's body. He pulled his MA5K from his back and started shooting. The Brutes were surprised and they were both dead before they could react. James walked over to the body of the child and found several bites had been taken out of it too. He pushed the Brutes and the Child off the roof, into the street below.

***

Adam ran through a building opposite the target building. He was closely followed by four Brutes. Adam had run into the Brute squad just after leaving James. He had occasionally stopped to fire quick bursts back into the advancing Brutes but this hadn't much effect.

Adam ran up a flight of stairs while trying to get a grenade off of his belt. He succeeded and primed the grenade, which he immediately dropped. Adam ran forward and dived for cover as the grenade detonated, killing two of the four Brutes and reducing the other two Brute's shields to nothing. Adam pulled his M6D pistol from its holster and shot both Brutes twice to the head.

Adam reloaded his weapon and walked to a nearby window facing Alpha squad's target. He looked through a window opposite his and saw a marine staring back. Adam opened his window and the marine did likewise.

'Who are you', asked the marine.

'Lieutenant Adam Smith,' replied Assassin, 'Who are you'.

'Private Brian McKnight,' answered the marine who then added, 'We need help in here. The Covenant has taken control of the bottom floor and they put some kind of bomb down there.'

The marine sounded frantic and Adam knew that if the Covenant put a bomb in the building, it wouldn't be long before they used it. Adam looked around the room and saw two long pieces of wood propped against the wall at the far side of the room. They looked like they would fit across the gap to the other building.

'Hang on marine,' said Adam, 'I got an idea and it just might work.'

***

Erik's condition started to deteriorate a few minutes earlier, he had started coughing up blood and now he couldn't stand without help. Sarah used the last of the biofoam but this time it had no effect. If Erik wasn't treated soon, he would almost certainly die. Sarah looked around and saw an overturned Mongoose. After some effort Sarah was able to lift it back upright and after making sure it worked properly she helped Erik over onto the back of the vehicle.

Then starting the engine, she slowly drove the Mongoose up the road towards the ASKLON building.

Subject: [story] Escaping New Mombassa (part ten is up)

An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

Part 12.

New Mombassa, 20th October 2552, 1826hours.

James aimed at a Jackal that had lingered behind the rest of the Covenant forces that were moving towards the target building. James wanted to kill as many Covenant as he could before the alarm was raised and picking off stragglers was the most effective way to accomplish that. He steadied his designated marksmans rifle once his scopes red dot appeared over the unsuspecting Jackals head. James waited a second, then fired killing the Jackal.

James searched for another target and saw a group of five Grunts, sleeping in a dark dusty alley. James pondered how the Grunts were safe from any trouble while in their lonely street and he even considered sparing their lives, but James knew they would kill him if they got half a chance. Besides they weren't totally safe, just almost safe.

James aimed his rifle at each individual Grunts head. He fired from his silenced DMR and made short work of the sleeping Grunts. James looked back towards the target building and saw the two Wraith tanks move up the road, away from the building. James also spotted most of the infantry strolling after the two tanks.

The remainder of the Covenant forces was minute compared with what it consisted of before. Two Hunters, one Brute and several Grunts were all that remained. James evaluated his foes.

The Brute was clearly in charge but wasn't the biggest treat. That was the presence of the two Hunters which would be almost impossible to kill with his current weaponry, unless of course he got a lucky shot at their exposed backs. James considered his options, if he killed the Brute, the Grunts would more than likely scatter and end up being more of a danger to themselves than to James. James then considered trying to kill the Hunters but after a minute thinking he realised that if he was lucky he would only kill one before the other reacted.

James chose to kill the Brute. He reloaded his DMR and put all the bullets from his damaged clip into the one he just replaced. James looked down the sights of his gun and waited for a clear shot but before he got one, a new enemy he had never seen before literally drifted in front of the Brute.

James studied the new arrival, it resembled a floating squid with a mechanical back. James then noticed that a light on the creatures back was flashing with a blue light. He put such thoughts aside however as he had a mission to complete. He adjusted his aim back to the Brute's head and fired three shots into it. The first two overloaded the aliens shield and caused the shields to fail, allowing the third shot to lodge in the creature's brain.

The Brute fell and as James expected, the Grunts scattered. However the new, squid like alien did something completely unexpected. It started to rise into the air, tentacles flailing. The mechanical part of the alien was now flashing red and appeared to be dragging it the alien upwards.

James however had a different, more serious problem to worry about. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the Hunters charging their weapons and he barely had enough time to jump out of the way before the first shot flew through the air he had perversely inhabited and exploded on the wall behind him.

Suddenly, a bright blue flash filled the air and when James peered over the edge of the building, he saw that the squid alien had just exploded. James saw several chunks of metal from the explosion flying in several directions. One flew straight towards the Hunters, bounced off the ground between them and detonated in a ball of light-blue fire that engulfed both hunters. As the fire receded, James saw that both Hunters had died and now all that remained of them were their eel like forms floating in a puddle on the ground.

James searched for the remaining Grunts and found them all huddled up in the same alley he had killed the others. James again took aim, but instead of wasting ammo on each individual Grunt, James instead shot a plasma grenade, which detonated and killed all the Grunts.

James then began climbing back down the ladder and into the building itself. Once he reached the bottom floor, a huge explosion from outside, shook the ground causing James to fall and several pictures hanging on the wall to fall and smash on the ground. He got up and staggered outside to see that the target building had collapsed in on itself.

***

Adam pulled the last man across the makeshift bridge and led the group of seven soldiers and the two owners of ASKLON to the ground floor of the building. He stuck his head outside the door and was surprised to see what appeared to be the entire Covenant force moving up the adjacent street. He waited until he was sure the last of the Covenant forces left and then led his new group into a building across the road.

He looked back at the rest of the men. He saw the private he had first talked too through the windows. Even though he sounded frightened at first, the private was able to carry out Adam's orders flawlessly and Adam had to admit that if he didn't, getting the VIPs out of the building would have been a much harder task. From the way Adam heard ASKLON's owners talking, they wouldn't have opened the window to Adam at all for fear of him being a Brute in Human skin. Private Brian McKnight, Adam remembered. He quickly wrote down the name on the back of his hand to make sure he would remember it later. Now that he had a vacancy in Alpha squad from Vladimir's death, he was willing to get any good marine as a replacement.

They continued through the building and out onto a street on the other side. Adam again checked there was no Covenant. When he was satisfied he led the group up the street. He got them all to line up against the wall on the left side of the street and got them to proceed with their backs to the wall. He peered around a corner at the end of the street. He saw a Mongoose, with two soldiers on it, tearing towards him leaving clouds of dust in their wake. As the Mongoose slowed he recognised the driver as Sarah and he finally recognised the pale Erik behind her.

Adam ran towards them as the Mongoose stopped and seeing Erik's condition, ordered the marines to set up a perimeter. Adam helped Sarah take Erik off the back of the Mongoose and move him over into cover at the side of the street.

'What happened him', asked Adam while filling Erik's wound with biofoam.

'I'm not sure,' came the reply, 'I found him like this after we were flung off the top of the building. Where's James and Vladimir?'

'Vladimir's dead,' replied Adam trying to take any emotion out of his voice. 'I'll call for a med evac.'

'Commander White, come in over.'

Adam, I'm inbound in a Pelican. Get to the helipad on top of the building beside ASKLON's. ETA twenty minutes.

'Commander, you don't understand, Commander?'

The comm line had been jammed by something so Adam had little choice but to take his squad to the rendezvous point. He made use of the two ASKLON owners by making them carry Erik on a stretcher as they set off again.

An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

Part 13.

New Mombassa, 20th October 2552, 1912hours.

James looked as his city map. He saw that there was an ONI supply depot near his current location. James checked his ammo. He had only seven rounds left for his DMR and twenty five for his MA5K. James set off for the supply depot.

After only a few minutes, James had arrived to see two marines inside were pinned down by several Jackals who had constructed a wall out of their shields. James aimed his MA5K and quickly emptied his clip into the aliens, killing most of them. James's diversion gave one of the marines a chance to lob a grenade into the Jackals which finished off the survivors.

'Thanks soldier,' said one of the marines, 'I'm Ryan Cole and this is Sam Kingston.'

'James Foley,' replied James, 'Is there any ammo or weapons here?'

'See for yourself,' said Sam in a heavily German accent.

James walked into the supply depot to find it almost completely empty of weapons. All he found was an SMG and fifty rounds of ammunition for it. Then James noticed the glowing symbols on the other side of the supply depot. There was a Y shape with three smaller symbols fitting into the three spaces made by the Y.

'What is that,' asked James.

'Don't know,' replied Ryan, 'it was there when we got here. What now?'

'What do you mean?'

'What do we do?'

'We move out, I have to find the rest of my squad. We'll start looking at the ASKLON building.'

The marines walked out of the supply depot and proceeded up the empty street, towards the ASKLON building. The marines came out onto another street, littered with abandoned cars. None of the cars would be of use however as the road blocks were up and no cars could possible leave the street. Most of the cars were burnt out and unusable anyway.

The marines were now beside the ASKLON building when a window on the building opposite opened and Adam stuck his head out.

'James, were in this building,' shouted down Adam, 'Were going to the top floor, I'll see you there.'

James led the two marines that were with him into the building and they began their long gruelling climb to the top.

***

Adam led his group towards the building Commander White specified. Every time the group neared a junction on the street, Adam and Brian would check that there were no Covenant on the other street and keep watch as the others ran behind them. They were lucky and never even saw a trace of the Covenant before they reached the building.

The ground floor of the building was a mess. Furniture laid scattered about, most of it broken. The remains of a glass table were in the centre of the room where two legs were still attached to a chunk of the table itself. The rest of the glass table was scattered around the room like everything else, most of the glass however was just small shards. Several newspapers lay about, torn in places but still legible.

Adam picked up one of the newspapers and read the headline,
The UNSC, the men and women winning the war
Adam threw the paper down again, winning the war, if only that was true. The UNSC was getting hammered and humanity was on the brink of extinction, how could they possible be winning the war?

Adam led his group out of the wrecked lobby and up a stairs. After a few minutes they made it to the fifth floor. Adam told his group they could take a five minute break as the VIPs were complaining about being tired. Adam sat down next to a window and looked out to see James and two other marines walking up the street. Adam quickly fumbled with the leaver to open the window and finally prised it open.

'James, were in this building, were going to the top floor, I'll see you there.'

James told his group that their break was over and they had to move out again. After putting down complaints from ASKLON's owners they all agreed to continue up the stairs. Eventually the group made it to the top floor. Adam and Brian were the first two up the stairs as usual. They went over to the door out onto the roof and slowly opened it.

Outside, the roof was littered with bodies both Human and Covenant. Adam then noticed that most of the Covenant bodies were Elites. Adam and Brian carefully advanced outside and found that there was no Covenant present. Adam went back in and gave the all clear signal to proceed.

Adam went back outside to see two Pelican dropships en route around half a click away. The entire group was now ready at the helipad. Adam went through the dead bodies and was able to recover several weapons, two Plasma rifles, three Spikers and even an energy sword. The Pelicans arrived as he finished collecting the weapons. Commander White stepped out and looked at the seriously injured Erik.

'Get him into Pelican Bravo 352,' ordered the Commander, 'VIPs are to go with him along with three marines.'

Erik was placed in the Pelican by the VIPs and three marines climbed in after them. Commander White, Adam, Brian, Sarah and four other marines watched as the first Pelican flew away. Suddenly the door behind them burst open and James ran out followed by two marines.

'James, glad you could make it,' commented Commander White, 'were getting the hell out of this city, most-' a huge explosion in the distance cut him off before he could finish. The marines looked for its source and quickly saw that it was the ONI building.

'What the hell was that?' shouted Adam who turned to look at the Commander.

'We had to,' replied the Commander, 'If the Covenant got their hands on some of the information we have there, the war would be over.'

Adam was about to respond but another Pelican appeared from behind a building being chased by four Banshees. One of the Banshees fired its heavy cannon and the projectile collided with the Pelican, sending it hurtling down into the city.

Were hit, were hit. Can't control it.... Dam were going down

The transmission ended and the marines could see a plume of dust from the crash site entering the air.

'Lieutenant, I want you to take your squad and get to the crash site,' ordered Commander White, 'Search for survivors, if there are any I want you to leave the city, get out into the desert, you know where our base is south of Voi.'

'Take these two too compensate for your lost squad members,' said the Commander, pointing at Sam and Ryan.

'Commander, can I take him too?' asked Adam, pointing at Brian.

'If you want,' replied the Commander, 'there are weapons in the Pelican if you need them.'

Adam and James stepped into the Pelican and retrieved ammo for their weapons. Sarah followed suit and soon all the marines had what they wanted. Just before James got out of the Pelican he noticed a Spartan Laser lying on a seat.

'Can I take this too?' James asked the Commander who just shrugged.

An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

SECTION III: Pelican Down

Part 14.

Alpha Squad moved stealthily through the abandoned streets of New Mombassa. The time they had encountered the Covenant, they opened fire quickly and efficiently, cutting the enemy to shreds before they could get a shot away. Alpha Squad never even stopped running before they had finished off the patrol.

James was starting to regret bring the Spartan Laser. It was a big and bulky weapon and it was also very heavy. James now knew why it was called a Spartan laser. The marines stopped suddenly at a junction as the lieutenant held up his hand, motioning them to stop. James quickly went up to the front of the group.

'What's wrong,' he asked quietly.

'Look for yourself,' replied Adam who then added, 'but don't fire.'

James stuck his head around the corner to see several 'squids' and a few Grunts. The Grunts were dragging dead Elites into another street and the squids appeared to be drawing symbols on the wall. James noticed that the symbols looked very similar to the one he saw back in the supply depot but these symbols didn't have anything in the Y shape. The symbols were just plain Ys.

Adam had taken a camera out of his bag and started recording this strange Covenant behaviour. James remembered that earlier in the day he had seen Jackals and Brutes massacring Elites. He then remembered that the Grunts present at the massacre were cowering in a corner, like they didn't want to fight the Elites.

Time slipped by as Adam documented the Grunts. Almost five minutes passed before Adam called James up to him.

'James, I want you to proceed to the crash site without me,' he said, 'take everyone except Brian. We'll catch up later.'

James didn't say anything. He went to each person, tapped them on the shoulder and motioned for them to follow him. They complied and James backtracked the way they came and exited off a different street to get to the crash site. James checked his map. They were still roughly two clicks away from the crash site. The marines continued on.

After twenty minutes, James and Alpha Squad were only a few hundred meters from the crash site. James could here a whirring noise coming from the adjacent street. He looked ahead and could see the Pelican, nose lodged into the ground. Several Covenant were swarmed around the back of the Pelican, firing inwards, however James was surprised when someone inside returned fire from an assault rifle which was followed up by plasma fire coming out of the Pelican.

James could hear the whirring noise again and recognised it as a Wraith. For the first time since getting the Spartan Laser, he was happy he had it. He told his squad to follow as he ran through a building and came out on the street on the other side. The problem was much more serious that James had imagined. There were two Wraiths, at the rear of a huge army of Covenant.

James immediately readied the Spartan laser and he saw his squad mates do similar with their weapons. He turned off the laser pointer, with this many Covenant packed into such a small street, it would be impossible to miss. He charged the laser and shot at the closest Wraith. The shot hit the huge tank in the motor at the back and the Wraith exploded. The rest of his squad opened up just after him. James lowered the laser as it overheated and waited for it to cool.

The second Wraith turned and James heard the crack of a sniper rifle and saw the gunner in the tank lose his head. The Wraith however was able to fire its mortar and Alpha Squad scrambled into cover as the giant ball of plasma neared. James jumped behind an abandoned car as the plasma hit the ground behind him, however even though he had evaded the initial explosion, some of the plasma splashed across his back, eating through his ballistic armour and blistering his skin.

James tried to ignore the pain and raised the now cooled Spartan Laser. He charged it fully and fired as the first of the Covenant infantry scrambled over the wreckage of the first Wraith. As the Laser impacted, the second Wraith met the same faith as the first. Weapons were fired again as the Covenant were cut down.

Two Hornets flew overhead, two men hanging onto their sides. They opened up with their cannons and cut down several Covenant and gave Alpha Squad a chance to make a run back through the building and down to the crash site.

***

Wilson was brought to a Pelican shortly after his wrists were attended to. He looked down from the ONI building and saw that the Covenant was starting to overwhelm the human defenders. He was led to a Pelican on the roof of the ONI building. Inside he saw several marines and an Elite, more than likely the one he had helped capture. The Elite had been strapped to the side of the Pelican and an assault rifle was levelled at its head.

Wilson stepped into the Pelican and found that he could move his wrists already, even though it was still painful. He sat down on the opposite side of the Elite and looked at it. The Elite's shoulder was still a terrible mess, however it looked like someone had filled it with biofoam.

Wilson felt a jolt as the Pelican lifted up off the ground and began flying away slowly. A man was standing up at the turret. Wilson again looked at the Elite who snapped its jaws at him. Wilson looked away again.

Suddenly a Banshee came out from behind a building. The gunner fired at it but the Banshee rolled to one side and fired its plasma cannons. Most of the plasma missed but two shots impacted on the wing of the Pelican, burning through a small portion of the armour plating. The gunner fired again and got a few hits on the Banshee, however at their speeds, the bullets just glanced off it.

Suddenly two F99 UAVs passed the pelican, going towards the Banshee, one fired a missile which hit the Banshee, blowing it into pieces. However the one Banshee was soon replaced by four whom simultaneously opened up with their plasma cannons. One of the plasma bolts hit the Pelican's gunner in the face, killing him instantly, however the body fell forward and out of the Pelican, dragging the turret with it.

The pilot then closed the hatch at the back, blocking any further plasma hitting the marines. Wilson felt the Pelican lurch as something hit the Pelicans engine. He heard the pilot's voice on the intercom:

Were hit, were hit. Can't control it.... Dam were going down.

The Pelican lurched violently downwards, Wilson grabbed onto a railing and held on for his life. The Pelican hit the ground and he bashed his head off the roof, losing consciousness.

Wilson work to see the Elite standing in the entrance to the Pelican. He was firing a Plasma Rifle. Wilson looked around and saw that only two marines in the Pelican, one was dead. The other marine however was regaining consciousnesses. Wilson felt something pick him up and turned his head to see it was the Elite. It was holding him from the back.

'You will help,' it said shoving an assault rifle into Wilson's arms and dropping him again.

Wilson looked back at the other marine, who nodded and reached forward for a pistol that was close to him. Wilson crawled forward and shot at the Covenant that were trying to overrun the Pelican. Wilson began wondering why the Elite would want him to help but he quickly put those thoughts aside as a fresh wave of Covenant approached. He was glad to have the Elite as a possible ally.

The squid like aliens and the Grunts finally left. Adam had been documenting them for twenty minutes now as the squids, also known as Engineers, had drawn their Y shape symbols. Adam walked down the streets still documenting what the aliens had done.

He rounded the corner and saw what had been done: The Grunts had dragged the dead Elites into a short dead-end street and the Engineers had covered the walls with their strange plain Y shape symbols. However there was one exception. One of the Y shapes had a circle in the top of it. The circle represented a sad face, but Adam had seen the face before. It was the sad face of New Mombassa's AI, the Superintendent.

Adam recorded all of the symbols, especially the Superintendent. He then turned off his camera and proceeded towards the crash site with Brain in tow.

An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

Part 15.

New Mombassa, 20th October 2552, 2024hours.

Alpha squad ran up the wrecked street towards the crash site. The two Hornets had landed and the four men on their sides had dismounted. As quickly as they landed the Hornets had taken off again and ripped through an advancing crowd of Covenant with their fifty calibre cannons, scattering those they didn't kill. Several bullets impacted on Grunt's methane tanks, igniting them and causing them to detonate.

James looked back at the new marines and was surprised to see their weapons trained in on a target inside the crashed Pelican. James tried running faster but his blistered back wasn't up to it. He felt a warmness as blood trickled out of the wound. Sarah overtook him and stopped him. She filled the wound with biofoam. It hurt but James was used to the feeling and put up with it until the numbness set in.

James again looked towards the crashed Pelican. He saw something inside throw out a Plasma Rifle and an Elite stepped out. At this everyone in Alpha Squad stopped. The Elite had just done something unheard of and had given itself up. Two men aimed their rifles at the Elite's head while the other two climbed into the Pelican. They came back out shortly after carrying a man each.

Alpha Squad again began running over the rubble in the street, towards the crash site. After another minute running, they arrived at the crash site. James, who was in command of Alpha Squad until Adam returned, ran towards the man who appeared to be the leader of this group. He looked at the two survivors of the crash and was surprised to see Wilson was one of them.

'Who are you?' asked the other groups leader.

'James Foley, Alpha Squad,' replied James, 'Who are you?'

'John Ford, Bravo Squad, its good to have you lot around.'

A plasma bolt landed between the two men, singing the air. They both looked up to see several Jackals on a roof top. James heard four cracks from a sniper rifle and saw three Jackals fall, causing the rest to scatter.

'Create a perimeter around the crash site,' shouted John, 'Alpha, take the east buildings, Bravo take the north.'

'We'll take the Elite and the Survivors,' shouted James, grabbing the Elite's arm and shoving his assault rifle into its back. He walked it over to East building and let Ryan and Sam in first to check that there were no Covenant about. He walked the Elite in next and Sarah was last with Wilson and the other survivor.

'James, let the Elite go,' said Wilson once they were all inside, 'It could have killed me but it didn't. I think it's on our side now.'

'I can speak for myself, human,' growled the Elite, 'I will fight with you humans, my kind has been betrayed by the San 'Shyuum and the Jiralhanae-'

'Who?' cut in Sarah.

'Your kind calls them Prophets and Brutes. They have betrayed us and we will do what we must to survive, even if that means allying ourselves with you humans.'

James got up and handed the Elite an assault rifle.

'I will not use your weapons human. I would rather fight with my hands.'

'Well, Elite at least tell us your name,' said Wilson.

'Narr 'Offiken.'

Ryan, who had disappeared outside, now came back in holding a Plasma Rifle.

'Will this do you,' he asked handing the weapon to Narr.

Adam and Brian continued through the city. They were just fifty meters from the crash site but they couldn't advance as there were Covenant forces approaching the crash site from every direction. Now they were hiding in a building adjacent the crash site. Adam was trying to talk to radio James but wasn't having any luck.

'Any UNSC personal please respond,' said James into the microphone. He was getting desperate now.

Who is this, over replied a voice from the radio.

'This is Lieutenant Smith, who are you, over.'

Sergeant Ford of Bravo Squad, over.

'Sergeant, I'm stuck in a building fifty meters from the crashed Pelican. I can't move, there's Covenant crawling all over the street outside.'

What direction are you from the crash site?

'I'm south of the crash site, over.'

Understood, the Covenant are setting up Plasma Cannons on the top of your building. From what I can see here there are only Grunts, over.

'I suppose you want me to take them out.'

That would be a great help.

Adam motioned for Brian to follow him. They both made their way up to the roof. Finally they made it to the entrance out onto the roof and found that the door had been smashed through. probable some dumb Brute that didn't know how to use a door thought Adam.

They quietly walked out to see several Grunts setting up Plasma cannons. Adam quickly killed one with his knife before Brian shot the rest. They attached a grenade to each cannon and primed them to detonate. Adam quickly ran down the stairs before the grenades detonated, destroying the turrets.

UNSC Dieing breath, in orbit over New Mombassa, 2032hours.

The siren sounded, signalling the ODST's to get ready for a drop. Lance Corporal Steven Walcott grabbed his preferred weapons, a M7 SMG and an M90a shotgun. He then made his way to the briefing room to join the rest of his squad. Squad leader Sergeant Ben Dunne was already present as were three other ODST's, George Parker, Jason Keyes and Fred Fitzgerald. They were just waiting on the last member of the squad Linda Johnson, who stumbled in through the door a short time later.

'Now that you're all finally here,' said the sergeant, looking at Linda, 'We have a new mission. There's a Pelican down in the city and ONI wants us to get down there and secure a perimeter. Don't ask why, they didn't tell me. There are already two squads of marines down there and they have a partial perimeter secured. Our mission is to get into the pelican and find a large black box marked S.I.'

'Any questions?' he asked, 'Good now get to your drop pods and strap in well. We drop in five minutes.'

An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

Part 16.

New Mombassa, 20th October, 2552, 2052hours.

The conversation with the Elite, Narr was abruptly stopped when a covenant grenade flew through the door, landing at the end of the room. Everyone in the room jumped down, except Narr who bellowed a war cry as he readied his Plasma Rifle. The grenade detonated, hurtling debris around the room, and shattering two nearby picture frames.

The marines got back up, weapons ready, to see two unarmoured Brutes rush into the room wielding Maulers. Narr fired his Plasma rifle, easily burning through the first Brute however the second Brute had gotten close enough to Narr to fire its Mauler. The shot however deflected of Narr's armoured chest and Sam was able to gun down the Brute with his Assault Rifle.

'Get back outside,' ordered James, 'kill any Covies that try to get in.'

With that the marines ran outside. Several shielded Jackals tried advancing, but they were cut down from Bravo squad's fire from across the crash site. No more help could be gotten from Bravo squad however as the Covenant forces split and attacked each building. Alpha squad made use of the cover provided by three large pillars that were at the front of the building.

A wave of Grunts rushed forward and fired at Alpha squad. Alpha squad returned fire and quickly cut down the forward Grunts. The next group of Grunts threw down their weapons and drew plasma grenades, activating them and running at Alpha Squads position. Narr along with Ryan and Sam quickly killed them before they could get to their position.

Two Hunters entered from the other side of the square along with several Brutes. These new arrivals were not an immediate concern for James however as they were attacked by a fresh wave of Jackals and Grunts.

This time the Jackals formed a turtle shape with their shields, overlapping them to deflect incoming projectile fire. The Grunts fired wildly from the sides of the turtle. The tactics were very successful until an over passing Pelican dropship's gunner opened fire with the turret, breaking the formation with the force of the fifty calibre bullets. Once the formation broke, Alpha squad took the opportunity to fire on the Covenant, quickly finishing them off.

James saw that the Covenant had stopped attacking their position and had instead begun attacking Bravo squad. The small squad of four men was in trouble as one of them was hit directly by one of the Hunters cannons. Another recklessly charged the Hunter and ended up impaled on its spiky armoured back. James turned to look for Sarah to tell her to shoot at the Hunters, however he found that she was already on it and saw her quickly empty a clip of ammo into the back of one Hunter. It fell and the second Hunter turned, giving Bravo's two survivors a chance to kill it.

'Ryan, Sam, I want both of you to run across and link up with Bravo squad,' said James, 'everyone else, give them cover running across.'

With that Ryan and Sam began running towards Bravo squad and the battle raging around them. Sarah reloaded her S2AM sniper rifle and after three cracks of the rifle, three Brutes were dead. Plasma rained down from a rooftop as Jackal snipers fired both Carbines and Beam rifles at the two marines, however a burst in their direction from Wilson's assault rifle silenced them, for some permanently.

Sam and Ryan made it past the crashed Pelican in the centre of the square and began shooting at the Brutes and Grunts advancing towards Bravo. Between sniper fire from Sarah and Bravo squad's assault rifle fire, combined with their own they made short work of the Covenant forces. James saw Bravo squad pull back into the safety of their building and James quickly withdrew Alpha squad back inside too.

'We should move out,' said Narr, 'The Covenant will return.'

'Yeah, but we don't have any transport,' replied James, 'We'd never make it out of the city alive.'

The Elite was about to say something but was stopped when the ground shuck. James looked outside and saw that an ODST drop pod had smashed through one of the pillars. The hatch popped off and an ODST stumbled out. James quickly ran to him and helped him up as several other drop pods smashed into the square, on impacting on the Pelican itself.

Adam looked over the buildings to see the sun starting to dip below the buildings. Brian staggered out of the building behind him and also looked at the sun.

'It'll be dark soon,' said Adam, 'we had better get back to Alpha squad soon.'

They set out towards the crash site. The marines turned a corner and found a Brute chieftain, with a huge hammer, along with several other lesser ranked Brutes looking right at them. The Brutes roared in unison and the Chieftain charged swinging the hammer.

Adam heard a whirring noise and soon found its source as four of the Brutes dropped from the sky in front of them. Adam fired his MA5K at them and saw that Brian did similar. Two Brutes died but the other two fired at the marines. Adam, seeing an open door, dragged Brian towards it but was too late as a spike punctured Brian's neck. He dropped to the ground, dead.

Adam felt a pang of guilt for Brian's death but quickly forgot as the Brutes turned their fire to him. He jumped through the door of the house as a spike impacted with his leg, however it deflected off his ballistic armour. From the ground Adam kicked the door shut. He then got up and ran to the back of the room, to a second door. There, he readied himself and aimed his rifle at the door.

The door flew inwards violently as the Chieftain hit it with its hammer, three Brutes including the Chieftain swarmed inwards and James started firing, and downing one Brute before he ran threw the door, kicking it closed like he did the last time. This time however he did not stop in the room and ran through an exit to the street outside.

He looked around and saw a sniper tower further down the street. Its occupants appeared to have been killed earlier in the day. Adam then saw that the other side of the street was littered with bodies, both Human and Covenant. He heard the door inside explode open. He quickly pulled a grenade from his belt, pulled the pin, dropped the grenade and ran down towards the sniper tower. A Brute stepped outside just as the grenade detonated, killing the alien.

The Chieftain however wasn't far behind and Adam ran into a cafe full of dead bodies, he jumped behind the counter and crouched down. The Chieftain entered just seconds later and overturned a table. It didn't see Adam though and when it turned its back on the counter, Adam jumped over and stuck his combat knife through its neck. After making sure it was dead, Adam set off for the crash site.

Steven felt the drop pod lurch as he was dropped over New Mombassa. He opened the video link with Sergeant Dunne and then started to concentrate on the flight controls. Steven, like many other ODSTs, preferred to fly the drop pod manually. He gripped the controls and corrected his course to bring him safely down into the square.

After falling nearly two kilometres he deployed the drop pods chute and felt another, stronger lurch as it slowed him down. However from somewhere deep in the city, an anti-air Wraith fired at the drop pods. He activated his thrusters to evade the attack but he still lost his chute as it took a direct hit.

He quickly accelerated ahead of the rest of the squad as he went into freefall. He quickly hit the emergency chute button and a second chute was deployed and soon after the pod smashed into the ground. He quickly hit the four eject buttons and the hatch was launched off. He waited a few moments and staggered out as a marine appeared from a building he had landed in.
