An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

Could someone comment, anyone, PLEASE

Part 17.

New Mombassa, 20th October, 2552, 2112 hours.

The Drop Pods had woken up the Covenant. Several Brute ran in from one street while the ODSTs were still trying to get their pods open. Alpha and Bravo squads gave them covering fire and soon six new ODSTs joined the battle. The advancing Brutes fell. All of them had been wielding Spikers which were ineffective against the ballistic armour worn by most of the marines.

Just as soon as the first group fell, two more took their place, this time armed with more dangerous Brute shots. One threw a spike grenade which landed very close to James. He jumped and rolled to avoid the grenade but one of the spikes it shot out lodged itself in his lower leg. James stood and barley avoided a Brutes fist. He fired his assault rifle at the Brute, ripping through its armour at short range and quickly killing it.

He looked around and saw that the marines had been pushed into the centre of the square, around the Pelican. He saw a grenade from a Brute shot hit the ground near one of the ODSTs. Before the ODST could get back up, the Brute killed him with two more grenades from the Brute shot. James shot at thee Brute with his MA5K and quickly killed it.

Only two of the attackers were left alive and they were quickly killed by the marines. James looked around and saw that two of the ODSTs had died, along with a marine. He walked over to the limp body of the marine and saw that it was Sam. A spike was had penetrated his armour and hit his heart. James reached down and took Sam's dog tags from around his neck. He placed them in his bag with the others.

The leader of the ODSTs approached James and after a formal introduction, the ODST sergeant, Ben Dunne told James they had lost two ODST's, George Parker and Fred Fitzgerald. James then told him that they had lost three including the two Bravo lost.

The marines were still outside and a new Covenant group entered from the northern street. There were four Brutes, an engineer and fifteen Grunts. The marines began shooting individual targets but soon found that their bullets had no effect, instead they all shot at the same alien and soon killed two of the Brutes. Just then however a group of Jackals lined the rooftops armed with all sorts of Covenant weapons.

As the first Grunts began to approach, the energy projectiles from the Jackals weapons rained down on the marines, killing several. James began to run towards an open building in the southern corner and was soon followed by the other surviving ODSTs and marines. He made it first and turned around to give covering fire to the rest of the group, only six others made it through the door.

He went in last and barricaded it from the inside. He then looked at the survivors, there were seven including himself: Sarah, Wilson, the Elite Narr, the ODST sergeant, another ODST he didn't recognise and John, the leader of Bravo squad. He then remembered that Adam was still out in the city and tried to contact him. He quickly got his reply:

James is that you over?

'Yeah, where the hell are you?'

I got a bit sidetracked on the way back, I'm now on the east side, over

'How far away?'

Around half a click. The Covenant are swarming all over this place, I'll try to get to you.

'Don't, there are Coven-'

He was cut off by the sound of a huge explosion outside. He dropped the radio and looked outside the window to see two Longswords flying off into the distance.

Any UNSC personnel respond, came a request from over the radio.

'We're here,' replied James.

This is Eagle one, what is your location, over.

'You just bombed it.'

I'm sorry about that, the area was swarming with Covenant.

'No, its fine, you just made our job a lot easier.'

Well anyway, we are here to provide air support for anyone left alive in this city. There are four of us up here, get out of the city tonight if you can.

'We'll try.'

James then re contacted Adam and told him to come to him. He looked back out the window and saw the scale of the damage, two of the buildings had been levelled including the one Bravo was in. Also there was no longer any sign of the battle that had taken place outside. The Pelican and the Drop Pods, they were all gone.

***

Adam looked down the street. He could have sworn he just saw something shimmer in the light from the street lamp above. He was well aware of the fact that the Covenant had developed cloaking devices. He chose not to take the risk of running into an invisible Brute and chose to move quietly, but slowly through the shadows.

He crouched down and crawled to the dark left side of the street. He then put the silencer onto his MA5K and put a short burst in the direction of the possible, invisible Brute. He clearly hit something vital as a Brute appeared out of thin air in front of him. He opened up with his assault rifle and brought the alien to the ground.

He then heard a howl which was quickly followed up by another as two, visible Brutes ran down the street. Adam shot these too and quickly killed them before continuing onwards to the rendezvous point with Alpha squad. After five more minutes he made it and rounded the corner to see seven marines waiting. By that time the sun had set below the buildings and the city had begun to darken.

Part 18.

New Mombassa, 20th October, 2552, 2152hours.

Pilot Michael Green pressed down on the button that let him speak with his wingmen, 'Eagle three, come in over.'

Go ahead Eagle one, Eagle three replied.

'You know the area we just bombed, there's a marine squad down there, I think it's the one the Commander wanted us to help get out of here.'

Understood Eagle one. What do you want me to do about it, over?

'You and Eagle four are to keep searching the city, see if there's anyone else in this mess. Over.'

Understood.

Michael finished by saying, 'Eagle two, you're with me.'

The Longsword's radar started to beep as four contacts appeared four kilometres away. He quickly checked the visual radar and saw that they were all Banshees. Michael quickly selected the closest two and got missile locks for them. He pushed forward on the throttle and sped up the fighter to its maximum safe speed.

After only twenty seconds he had travelled the distance between them and fired his missiles at the first two Banshees which rolled into the air but to no avail as the missiles found their targets, destroying them instantly. The other two Banshees turned around and fired their plasma cannons, however Michael quickly rolled and avoided the shots.

By then Eagle two had arrived and opened up with his sixty calibre heavy cannon, ripping one Banshee apart. Eagle one followed suit and destroyed the last Banshee. Two links were uploaded to Eagle one and twos radar. They read Alpha squad and Bravo squad. They were moving slowly away from the site Eagle one had bombed, clearly on foot.

'Looks like we're on escort duty again,' commented Eagle one to Eagle two as he turned his Longsword around and headed towards Alpha and Bravo squads position.

***

Two Longsword fighters will escort you as far as Mabuka station, after that they'll have to fuel up and won't be available again for a few hours. Good luck.

Commander White had contacted the marines shortly after Adams arrival. He had explained the situation: several more Covenant ships were inbound to Earth and would likely attack New Mombassa as there were still Covenant troops on the ground.
Most of the civilian population had been successfully and only around a hundred UNSC and NMPD personnel remained. Those few remaining were either on missions or trying to get out of the city.

It was seven kilometres to Mabuka station but luckily there was an untouched supply and vehicle depot very near their position and after a short five minute walk they arrived there. Adam put in the access code he got from Commander White and the doors slowly opened outwards.

Everyone in the group was disappointed by what they saw. The only weapons were silenced SMGs and pistols, not to mention that the only vehicles there were two Mongooses. Everyone took either an SMG or a pistol. James swapped his out of ammo MA5K for an SMG and gave the one remaining clip to Adam.

'Everyone listen up,' shouted Adam, 'there's only two Mongooses' and since there's eight of us it looks like half of us will be walking.'

'I will walk, human,' said Narr gruffly.

'Alright, James I want you to walk too with Sarah and Steven. Everyone else mount up.'

Wilson got into the drivers seat of one Mongoose while Adam got on the back. Ben, the ODST sergeant drove the other while John mounted the back. They drove out slowly, Wilson's Mongoose first, as they went down the street and turned the corner.

James waited until they were out of sight and began to move out of the supply depot. Moments after he moved, a plasma bolt passed through the air he had previously occupied, missing him by millimetres. James jumped back just as a second plasma bolt again nearly hit him. James, who knew that Beam rifles needed to recharge if fired in rapid succession, looked for his would-be killer and quickly found it on a rooftop.

Just as he spotted the Jackal, a huge army of Grunts turned the street corner below the Jackal. The spotted James and they all shot at the same time, filling the air with enough plasma to disintegrate an Elephant troop transporter. James quickly dived back into the supple depot and saw that his squad had already taken cover, backs against the wall.

The plasma poured in and destroyed the wall it hit, the metal shelves that previously held weapons lay as a puddle on the floor, mixed with melted concrete from the wall. However the amount of plasma coming in soon began to die down. James looked out for a brief second and saw why, most of the Grunts had been killed by friendly fire. James told his squad this and Sarah agreed to try to kill the Jackal on the rooftop.

James, Narr and Steven ran out of the supply depot and began firing at the Grunts. Sarah followed them and quickly disposed of the Jackal. The battle was over quickly and the marines reloaded their weapons. The door of the supply depot closed behind them and they couldn't reopen it as none of them knew the code.

Suddenly a Banshee flew down between the buildings and fired its fuel rod gun at the marines below who scattered across the road. The bolt impacted and splashed plasma across the road however none of this harmed the marines who fired back as the Banshee flew upwards again. They needn't have bothered however as a Longsword flew over, destroying the Banshee.

Need any help? asked Eagle over the radio.

***

The Mongooses made it one kilometre without any incidents, however now they had a huge problem. Two Hunters faced them, Fuel rods charging. The marines quickly dismounted as the Hunters fired and reduced the Mongooses to ash.

The marines took cover at either side of the road behind UNSC barricades and lobbed grenades over the tops of them. However the Hunters were unaffected and began recharging their fuel rod cannons. Unexpectedly a missile flew out of the sky and landed between the Hunters, killing both instantly.

'Thanks,' said Adam into the radio.

Anytime. replied Eagle one.

SECTION IV: Road To Mabuka Station

Part 19.

New Mombassa, 20th October, 2552, 2234hours.

This is Eagle three over.

'Go ahead Eagle three, over,' replied Michael.

I spotted a closed drop pod in the Tayari Plaza area, possible survivor. Can you send your squad to investigate.

'Negative on that request, it's too risky.'

Understood.

The Longsword turned automatically as earlier Michael had put it onto autopilot. He checked his fuel levels, two hours left, enough hopefully to do some more damage to the Covenant. Michael then sorted through the multiple image feeds from the F-99 Wombat drones still patrolling the city. The ONI building was still falling apart, several Covenant dropships were searching for survivors.

Michael got a lock for them and sent the new waypoint to Eagle twos radar map. They both accelerated to pay a visit to the Covenant invaders. Michael took manual control and quickly rolled his fighter just to get a feel for the controls. The shot over the city, much faster than any bullet.

Suddenly the warning sound screeched through the cockpit of Michael's Longsword. After a quick check he found that it was the same in Eagle twos Longsword. Michael's radar flashed and a tiny window appeared on his heads up display built into his helmet. Four guided plasma missiles had been launched at them, two per Longsword.

Michael launched his flares any was happy to see one plasma missile streak of towards a flare. His wingman however wasn't as lucky as both plasma missiles continued on course. The plasma missile closed on Michael's Longsword. He waited until it was just ten meters away and rolled to the left, watching the missile fly past. He fired his 110mm rotary guns at the missile, destroying it before it could turn.

Eagle two did similar and as the first missile past, he destroyed it. The second missile however clipped the Longswords tail, melting the top of it. After that the Longsword wouldn't fly as well and kept swerving around.

'Eagle two, your tail has melted. Return to base, over,' commanded Eagle one.

Its nothing serious Eagle one. I'm f-,' he was cut off as the Longsword did a sudden dive to the left. Eagle two compensated and was soon flying relatively straight again.

'Return to base, [i]now
,' ordered Michael again and this time Eagle two complied without complaint.

James led his group through one of the cities many heavy doors. The other side was totally different to what any of them had anticipated however. Several hundred Covenant filled a small plaza on the other side. James looked up to the rooftops and saw several Jackal snipers patrolling the perimeter.

James motioned for the group to move back quietly, however they were stopped as a Covenant patrol behind them began to move towards them. They hadn't been seen so they quickly hid in a small gap between the door and a building. The patrol walked through the door. James watched them as they continued on, counting each one of them. In all there were two Brutes and five Grunts, a small patrol but still a threat.

The door however did not remain closed. It shut after the patrol walked past. James quickly went over to it to try and figure out why. Then he noticed it. On the little screen the emoticon of the cities AI, the superintendent, was gone. It was replaced with one word: OFFLINE.

Now with now way back, the squad had to move through the plaza and get out the still open door on the other side. He looked around. The best way to get out would be to neutralise the Jackals patrolling the perimeter. If they could do that they would be able to sneak around the Covenant.

James told his squad the plan and only got one response, from Narr who said, 'I will get my revenge.'

Sarah readied her sniper rifle. She only had three shots left but she would have to make them count. James got out his DMR which he had considerably more ammo for, with four fill clips. He took the silencer off his MA5K and hoped it would fit onto his DMR. Luckily it did.

He heard a faint whiz of a bullet and looked to see that in Sarah's first shot she had managed to kill not one but two Jackals. James aimed his weapon and killed a stationary Jackal and quickly spun around to kill another. Sarah used up her last two bullets and managed to kill another three Jackals. James kept firing however and eventually had killed twelve Jackals, making a total of seventeen.

After scanning the rooftops again the squad found that there were no more Jackals. They got down and began to crawl towards across the path at the side of the plaza. After a few minutes they made it across. Three Brutes stood guard at the exit however and it would be almost impossible to get away with killing these.

However they didn't have to as an F-99 Wombat came flying out of the air and into the crowd of Covenant in the centre, killing many and igniting methane tanks, which in turn caused even more deaths. In the confusion, James's group of marines were able to get safely out.

***

Adam and his group of marines neared a small fence topped with barbed wire. On the other side they could see the railway tracks extending off in all directions. Wilson quickly cut open a small hole in the bottom of the fence and the marines crawled through.

They walked up the tracks, eyes peeled and they eventually reached a small stop with just a raised platform. Three trains were on the tracks here, two on the right, one on the left. The left train was full of corpses and plasma burnes, clearly the Covenant had attacked here. The four marines took a break here, inside one of the right trains.

After five minutes they were about to set off again when four Ghosts appeared on the track a mile back, coming towards the marines. The marines waited for the Ghosts to near, and then they quickly killed the unsuspecting drivers.

'Well, well, it looks like we won't be walking out after all,' said Adam.

Michael's heads up display pinged, indicating he had received a message. He was just about to read it when the heads up pinged again, this time it was an incoming transmission from Eagle two.

This is Eagle two, Have Banshees tail I can't shake them.

Michael responded by accelerating his Longsword and flying towards Eagle twos position. It was a quick flight and Michael soon picked up twelve Banshees around Eagle twos position. He checked his armament and saw that he only had two AGSM-10 missiles remaining. He armed both of them and got locks on two Banshees. Michael fired and a second later saw the Banshees burst into bright blue flame.

Four of the others turned to face him and fired their plasma cannons at him. He saw the other six firing plasma bolts at Eagle two and saw most of the projectiles hit. Most of the back of Eagle two's Longsword had been melted by the plasma, including one engine. The fact the Longsword was still flying amassed Eagle one.

Michael swerved to avoid the incoming plasma however he still took some minor hits, nothing serious so far. Michael fired back with both his 110mm Rotary guns and 120mm Ventral guns, quickly destroying two Banshees. They were replaced by four however as two Banshees were left to destroy the already crippled Eagle two.

Michael quickly rolled to avoid an incoming bolt from a fuel rod gun and again opened up both cannons and destroyed another Banshee. Eagle two however lost a wing and began to swerve down into the city below however the Longsword was still flying on it one remaining engine.

Michael again rolled to avoid an incoming Banshee however as he did that a different Banshee pulled up behind him and hit the Longsword with plasma, destroying one of the four engines. Michael quickly fired again, ripping apart two unfortunate Banshees.

Eagle two swerved down again, clipping the top of a building and flipping over to smash into a second. The Longsword exploded and no signs of any survivors could be seen. The remaining five Banshees began to attack Eagle one.

Michael saw three Banshees manoeuvre behind him while the other two came from the front. They fired their plasma cannons at the same time the Longsword opened up with its cannons. The plasma however wasn't very accurate and most shots missed, however some lucky shots hit the Longswords, right wing flaps, rendering them useless.

The Longswords bullets however ripped through the incoming Banshees, killing the pilots and sending the Banshees hurtling into the city. The other three Banshees knew they didn't stand a chance against the Longsword and flew off in different directions. Michael however chassed one down and quickly destroyed it.

Michael began to fly back towards the city and Alpha and Bravo squads. Just a few seconds into his journey his heads up displays radar pinged as it picked up a huge blob of contacts a mile away. He looked in the direction and saw a Covenant Cruiser stick its nose through the clouds, along with twenty or so Seraph fighters.

'We have a problem Eagle three. I want you to rendezvous at this location as soon as you can, over,' said Michael while marking a spot on the city map, far away from the Cruiser.

Understood Eagle one. Heading to coordinates now.

***

As James, Narr, Sarah and Steven made it through the heavy door that separated the plaza from the rest of the city, a building back in the plaza began to crumple on its foundations and collapse. The small block of what were apartments came crashing down in the plaza, crushing the surviving plazas. How the building fell astonished James as there were no prior explosions that could have damaged the building.

James's attention was soon brought to different matters as a large swarm of Drones swept over the rooftops towards the plaza. Some however noticed the Marines and the Elite and dived down on an intercept course for them. James opened fire with his SMG, cutting several Drones out of the air and he was soon joined by Narr's Plasma rifle and Steven's and Sarah's SMGs.

Around twenty Drones fell before James had to reload. He was quick about it but when he began firing again, there were twice the amount of Drones. James shouted for his group to run and they were followed by plasma bolts and homing pink needles. James saw Steven, who began to trail behind, turn while running and put a quick burst into the fast approaching swarm. Needles flew towards him, most glancing off his ballistic armour but two pierced through, exploding inside him, cooking his skin.

Steven however paid no attention and kept firing, soon however he was surrounded by Drones. James turned around and fired into the swarm and saw several Drones fall to the ground, some dead, some with their wings full of lead. Narr and Sarah soon followed James's lead and fired into the fray killing even more Drones. Soon the swarm flew off and regrouped in the air, leaving their dead littering the streets around the body of Steven.

Steven was lying on the ground and James feared the worst, however he rolled over and pushed himself up, like nothing had ever happened. The left sholder of his armour was shattered as was his helmet. Steven's face looked terrible, severally bruised and swollen along the right side. The Drones, instead of shooting him had tried to beat him to death. A needle shard still remained, lodged in his foot.

James ran to him and helped get Stevens arm around his shoulder. James helped Steven walk into a nearby building and place him on a couch in the lobby. Just then, a message was picked up by James's radio. James played it however didn't have time to ponder the message as an upstairs window smashed and several Drones flew down the stairs, firing plasma bolts at their four enemies below.

James and Narr were quickest to act, killing most of the wave, however just as the first retreated, a second wave burst in through the downstairs glass walls. Sarah was ready and killed most of them before James and Narr finished them off.

The Drones flew away for the final time but were replaced with a bigger threat as two Shadow troop transports pulled up outside and five Brutes dismounted each.

James helped Steven up again and walked with him to a door at the end of the room while Narr and Sarah covered them with their weapons, killing a Brute each. These Brutes however were smarter then the normal reckless members of their species. They took cover behind a wall and fired up over it.

James and Steven reached the door that Sarah quickly opened and the three of them walked through, followed by Narr who blocked the door from the other side. They continued onwards until they found an exit on the opposite side of the building which the briskly exited. On the other side they found a welcome surprise as a Warthog and a Mongoose welcomed them.

Steven insisted he could drive and James let him hobble over to the Mongoose where he mounted the driver seat. Sarah got onto the back of the small vehicle. With the Warthog, James took the driver seat while Narr, who couldn't fit anywhere else, took the fifty calibre turret on the back.

***

The four Ghosts began to near another station just as a group of Covenant Choppers began to approach from the distant east where there was nothing but open desert. The fast approaching Choppers had been spotted several minutes ago by Wilson, due to the huge dust trial they left behind. Now though the Choppers were dangerously near.

Adam and the rest of the squad knew that the Ghosts didn't stand a chance against the more powerful Choppers. They increased the speed of their Ghosts and soon reached the station, which was significantly larger then the last for one reason, this one had an actual building.

The marines dismounted and quickly entered the building, just as the Choppers arrived. Strangely and very annoyingly the Choppers opened fire on the Ghosts, destroying all four. Adam quickly counted and saw that there were eleven Choppers in total. However seven drivers dismounted and the Brutes approached the building containing the four marines.

The Brutes stormed in, in the usual Brute fashion, however as Adam had predicted the move the marines inside were ready and all it took to kill the Brutes were two well placed grenades and nine rounds of ammunition. However what the marines didn't expect was a Chopper flying through the entrance. Adam who was taken completely by surprise could only watch as the other three marines attempted to kill the driver. Their initial attempts failed.

Finally Adam regained the use of his body and grasped his fallen MA5K from the floor and shoot at the driver. A very lucky hit killed the driver. The next problem were the three Choppers outside and there was only one way out of the train station and that was the way they came in which all three Choppers were watching.

Luckily Adam never had to find a solution as two Longswords flew overhead and bombed the three choppers, destroying them. Adam ran outside just as they disappeared over the city. Adam looked into the sky and stopped breathing for a moment as a Covenant Cruiser descended over the dark city from the clouds.

Subject: [story] Escaping New Mombassa (part twenty one is up)

An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

Part 21.

New Mombassa, 20th October, 2552, 2315hours.

Eagle one arrived at the rendezvous point to find Eagle three and four already present, circling above the city before. Michael checked his radar again and saw that several Seraphs were en route to his location.

'Eagle three, Seraphs inbound, I count eight on my radar,' said Eagle one.

Understood Eagle one, I see them. Two thousand meters and closing.

Michael's Longsword reached Eagle three and fours location. He spun the interceptor around and accelerated towards the incoming Seraphs, followed by the other two Longswords. The inside of his cockpit lit up red, signalling that the Seraphs had gotten missile locks for him. He saw two streaks fly through the air ahead of the Seraphs and assumed that these were the missiles.

The streaks closed in on him but a quick movement to the side saw them miss the Longsword. Eagle one saw a Seraph accelerate ahead of all the others. He fired his cannons and saw the bullets rip through the vehicle, killing the pilot. The Seraph dived down into the city and smashed against the roof of a building, lodging itself there.

Michael checked his radar and saw that both Eagle three and four had gotten a kill each. However in the brief second Michael spent looking at his radar, a Seraph had locked a missile onto his Longsword and fired. Eagle one tried to evade but was too slow and the missile impacted on his left wing, destroying both engines and leaving him with just the one right engine.

The Longsword staggered down and after a quick check of the Longsword's hull display, Michaels worst fears were confirmed. The wing was being held onto the rest of the craft by literally just a few bolts, also the Longswords last reserves of fuel were stored there. Suddenly a Seraph flew upwards in front of Michaels falling Longsword. It was only meters away and Michael could see the glistening bluish purple hull of the enemy fighter.

Without thinking Michael grasped the triggers and pulled as hard as he could. The force of the bullets however was too strong for the one remaining engine and the Longsword's nose was forced straight up into the air. It stayed like that for a few moments but then the Longsword fell downwards and flipped to point nose down.

The force of all this caused Michael to black out for a few moments but by the time he could see again, he had covered a huge distance to the city below. Michael saw that he was above the edge of the city, very close to the desert.

Pull up Eagle one, now, shouted Eagle three across the radio.

Michael tried pulling up, however as he did so the left wing came loose and ignited in the air. He spun around and was soon only three hundred meters from the city below, seconds away from crashing. Then Michael had an idea, he fired the Longswords cannons and was satisfied to see the nose rise from its collision course with the ground and face the desert.

The Longsword shot away from the city, over the deserted railway line and the abandoned houses, towards the desert. The Longsword began to drop again and the bottom of the interceptor impacted with a sand dune, sending a huge cloud of dust and sand into the air.

Michael turned the engine off completely and saw the speed begin to reduce from its current three hundred kilometres per hour. Michael then saw the large beige coloured carrier lower towards the ground several kilometres in front of him. It was hard to see in the darkness but Michael predicted that several Covenant dropships were leaving the carrier.

He tried to carefully turn the Longsword around and succeeded turning it almost completely around. Within a minute the Longsword had dropped to seventy kilometres per hour and Michael decided to try to land the Longsword. He let the interceptor lower itself to the ground, however there was one thing Michael didn't account for. As the nose of the Longsword lowered down and touched the sand, sand was thrown up onto the glass, blocking Michael's vision of the outside world. He now had to let the Longsword land itself.

He felt the whole craft spin around as the rest of the Longsword touched the ground. Suddenly the Longsword hit something and Michael was thrown across the cockpit. He hit his head and tasted blood in his mouth but dismissed these as minor injuries. He had suffered much worse before.

Michael checked his radar but saw no sign of Eagle three or four or any sign of the Seraphs. He climbed into the back compartment of the downed interceptor and opened the hatch on the roof. As he did so sand flowed into the Longsword and forced Michael back. After a few seconds the flow of sand stopped and Michael glimpsed the sun shining in.

Michael climbed out on the Longsword to find the right side completely engulfed in sand up to the centre. He climbed onto a sand dune and looked up into the air to see only one Longsword fighting twelve Seraphs. A missile hit the front of the Longsword, propelling it sideways into a second missile which detonated, along with the interceptor on impact.

Seeing this drained Michael of a lot of the confidence he had started out with on this mission, it also made him feel guilty for trying to land the Longsword instead of trying to get back into the fight. Maybe if he had stayed in the fight Eagle three and four would be alive right now. He tried to put his guilt aside, telling himself that he never would have been able to get up into the fight but he failed and instead went back into the Longsword to retrieve his MA5B standard issue assault rifle.

James guided the Warthog up the road, swerving in and out of the abandoned cars. A purple stroke flashed through the air in front of the vehicle, causing James to brake and Narr to fire the turret towards the rooftop, the source of the shot. James accelerated again but was forced to stop as one of New Mombassa's automatic roadblocks popped out of the ground in front of him.

Driving was not James's speciality, and this was clear from all skid marks on the road leading all the way back to where they found the vehicles. Once again James saw Steven's Mongoose tear pass and fit almost perfectly through the gap in the road blocks. James reversed and drove around the roadblock which then dropped back into the ground.

James was startled by a sudden burst of gun fire as Narr started firing the turret. Seconds after plasma bolts flew towards the Warthog, most flying safely by but some hitting their target.

'Ghost,' shouted Narr.

James put his foot down on the accelerator and brought the Warthog up the street, after the Mongoose. However he relaxed a bit once he heard the Ghost exploding, obviously destroyed by Narr who stopped firing the turret.

James caught up with the Mongoose on the road beside the desert. The sand was dark since the sun had gone down, but after shining the Warthogs powerful headlights towards it, the sand lit up almost blindingly.

James noticed something in the sky and looked up to see several Seraph fighters flying around and firing missiles. James guessed they were fighting Longswords, as they would be invisible in this dark light, unlike the Seraphs which almost glowed. James watched for a moment as one of the Seraphs was hit by something, and exploded.

'Hurry Human, I want to be out of this city soon,' said Narr in his gruff, alien voice.

'I'm working on it,' replied James, clearly annoyed by Narr's comment. He accelerated the Warthog again and soon caught up with Stephen's Mongoose. The ODST looked tired and his injuries didn't help him but almost everyone was injured. He'd just have to battle on.

The Warthog went up in front, followed by the Mongoose. They continued onwards up the street, weaving in and out of abandoned and burnt out cars. Eventually however they arrived at a train station to find a train sprawled out across the road, blocking any advance in a car. They couldn't go back as there had been no turn off points for two kilometres. The group dismounted their vehicles and continued on foot towards Mabuka station.

Adam, Wilson, Ben and John continued up the railway on foot. The Ghosts were too badly damaged to use and the Choppers had been wiped from all existence. Adam checked his map, still three kilometres to Mabuka station, and hopefully their way out of this city.

Adam watched the battle raging above him, the Longswords were almost invisible in the black sky but the Seraphs were easily seen, Adam hoped that the Seraphs visibility was enough for the seriously outnumbered Longswords to win. He didn't like the idea of another rescue mission especially with the Covenant Carrier looming.

Adam remembered back to what got him into this mess and Alpha squad. Eleven years ago Adam and a large group of around one hundred marines were assigned to protect an ONI official. The mission had been a disaster, several Banshees attacked the marines, who were all just out of training. Most of the marines died however Adam and two other marines had managed to pull the ONI officer with them, into a large, nearby forest where they evaded Brute patrols and stumbled upon Alpha squad, who immediately recruited them to replace dead squad mates.

Adam remembered this and realised that this was what he was doing himself to the other marines, replacing dead squad members. Alpha squad started out with some of the best marines but when they died, Alpha squad just took in any marine they found on their mission. He wondered if it was the same for Bravo, Gamma and Delta squads.

Suddenly the ODST sergeant, Ben stopped in front of Adam, staring ahead. Adam followed his gaze and after his eyes fully adjusted to the darkness, found what the ODST was looking at. Several new dropships had entered the city and were dropping a mixture of Covenant soldiers, Wraith tanks and Ghosts. Adam swore under his breath, how would they get past that? He told the marines to get into cover, and he soon followed them to think of a plan.

An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

Part 22.

New Mombassa, 20th October 2552, 2358.

Michael climbed back out of the Longsword, through the square hatch located in the centre of the top of the interceptor. He had his MA5B with him along with three spare clips of ammunition. After a quick look around Michael decided to leave the area before the Covenant arrived, searching for survivors.

While he was inside the Longsword he had quickly checked the still working map of the city on the control panel and found that the Longsword had crashed two kilometres from the cities edge, four kilometres from Mabuka station and the group of marines he had been escorting. His helmet's heads up display however was damaged and Michael could get nothing from it. Michael didn't need a map of this part of the city anyway. He had grown up here. He had left the helmet in the Longsword.

He looked around again, the sky was filling with clouds from the west, blocking the already scant star light. There was no light from the city either, no one to turn on lights in their apartments that night. Everyone had left the city, almost everyone anyway. Almost.

Michael remembered what the now abandoned city once was. It was the most important city in Africa in the last century, a huge sea port that brought prosperity and wealth to what was once known as Kenya. But now it was abandoned, lifeless and destroyed except for the Covenant invaders and the few hundred or so marines still remaining in the city.

Michael heard a noise in the distance coming from behind him. The dark shape of a Phantom appeared only a few hundred metres away, searchlight shining from its nose. The pilot jumped off the top of the Longsword and landed flat on his face in the sand below. He quickly scrambled up and hid below the Longsword's remaining wing which was raised only around twenty centimetres from the sand below. It took a small bit of digging through the sand for Michael to get under enough not to be seen.

The Phantom dropship lowered until it was just hovering off the ground. Michael saw it only ten metres in front of him however the Phantom couldn't see him in his hiding place under the wing of the Longsword. Several Brutes jumped out followed by Jackals. The Brutes were hard to see once they were away from the Phantom, however the Jackals shields glowed in the darkness, giving their location away nearly as much as the Seraphs.

Everything went quite for a few seconds but a sudden thump noise from inside the Longsword was quickly followed up by a load growl. Michael aimed his MA5B at a Jackal standing in front of Michael with its back turned. He was just about to fire when a Brute appeared in front of the Jackal, startling both the Jackal and Michael. It made a series of grunts and growls at the still stunned Jackal and shortly after the Phantom reappeared.

Michael watched as the Brutes re-entered the dropship and counted each. One less Brute got back on the Phantom then got off. Michael thought about this, maybe he counted wrong. It took him a few minutes but he convinced himself that he must have counted wrong. He was about to move out of his hiding spot when he heard a crunch and saw a large footprint etched into the ground. There was still one Brute.

A second footprint was made in the ground a few inches from the first and Michael pointed the barrel of his Assault rifle between them. He waited a few seconds, confirming he was on target, before firing. The first bullet clanged of something, followed by a Brute appearing from invisibility. More of the bullets hit the Brute while a few flew wide.

Michael had emptied his clip however the Brute remained upright, only startled. It turned looking for its attacker while Michael fumbled with a clip trying to shove it into its slot in the assault rifle. He finally managed and was happy to see that the Brute was still clueless as to the whereabouts of its attacker. He opened fire again, however the first few shots flew wide, he adjusted his aim and saw the Brute fall to the sand.

After waiting a few moments to guarantee the Brute was dead, Michael crawled out from under the destroyed Longsword interceptor and quickly ran to the Brutes body. He checked the dead alien for anything that might be useful and was about to give up when he saw a Mauler lying on the ground a metre from the Brute. The weapon resembled a shotgun without the barrel and Michael knew it was a deadly weapon at close range.

He quickly picked up the Mauler and stored it on his belt. Looking around, he saw another Phantom coming towards the crash site, or was it the same one coming back for the Brute? Michael didn't plan on staying around to find out and he quickly turned to run towards the city.

The marines, and Narr, approached the train that sprawled across the road in front of them. They moved cautiously as both Steven and James had seen the glowing green shield of a Jackal from somewhere behind the train. Sarah and Steven hung back, they would provide covering fire if anything went wrong.

Narr slowly advanced forward, once he reached the train he quietly slipped through a door and out to the other side. James did the same on the other side. He slipped out the other side of the train and was shocked by what he saw. Two Jackals were eating the remains of a human. James raised his assault rifle and killed both Jackals with quick bursts to the head.

James had seen Covenant eating humans before but he never grew accustomed to the sight. He signalled for the other marines to come over as and watched the darkness behind them for any signs of hostile movement.

The sound of a jet engine could faintly be heard in the distance but as Steven and Sarah neared, the sound grew louder. James looked around, searching for the sounds source and quickly found it, a Longsword interceptor was hurtling downwards in their direction. James was surprised the interceptor was still flying as one of its wings was in flames.

Suddenly, the burning wing came loose and fell from the Longsword, spinning through the air. It had enough forward momentum left however to make it as far as the marines, who scattered and jumped to the ground so they wouldn't be hit by the giant object. It flew over the marines heads and smashed through the second floor of a three block apartment, causing the third floor to collapse down.

James pushed himself back upwards and saw the Longsword manage a turn and head back out into the desert. Its altitude didn't stop decreasing however and it disappeared over the horizon. A few seconds later a plume of sand and smoke entered the air.

'Is everyone all right?' asked James who got the normal nod of the head response from everyone, 'good. Now we have to check the crash site of the Longsword for survivors, its '

'Why should we do that, we should be concentrating on getting the hell out of this city before more Covenant show up,' interjected Steven.

'We owe it to the pilot to see if he is alive. He's been watching us all night, making sure every one of us got out alive. How would you feel if you were left to be killed or eaten by the Covenant? We are going out into that desert to search for survivors.'

'Give me one reason I should go with you,' said Steven.

'You can hardly walk with that foot. Without us you wouldn't get one hundred metres,' replied James, 'will you come?'

'No.'

'I'll ask you one more time, will you ,' he was cut off by Narr.

'If you were under my command Human, I would have killed you,' then turning to James, Narr said, 'Why do you try? Clearly he doesn't want to go with you.'

'Nobody gets left behind,' said James who added, 'since you don't want to come I won't force you. Just remember, we're not coming back for you.'

With that James turned his back on Steven and was happy to see that Sarah and Narr were following. They had walked only ten metres away before Steven ran after them and shouted, 'wait, I'll go.'

Adam ducked behind another wall. The four marines had split up and agreed that to get through they would have to proceed alone while there were so many Covenant around. He peered out from his hiding spot to see an empty area. He ran through, over the gravel and debris just as a Phantom flew overhead, searchlight blearing.

Adam jumped down, attempting to appear dead with all of the bodies around him. The Phantom passed, not noticing anything unusual. Adam again got up and ran as quickly as possible over the gravely ground.

He stopped a short time later as a Brute patrol advanced around a corner in front of him. He immediately dived for cover into an alley way, filled with dead civilians and marine personnel. Just to be safe Adam aimed his assault rifle down the alley, in case one of Brutes managed to smell him. He laid down on the ground, behind a pile of tyres, still with his assault rifle aimed. After a few tense minuets, the Brutes finally passed, ignoring him.

An assassin will always carry on, even after death.

Wilson ran forward and ducked into a side street, just as several spikes flew through the air he previously occupied. He quickly pulled a grenade off of his belt and fumbled with the pin. After a few moments he finally pulled it out, dropped the grenade and ran, just as the first Brute came around the corner. Wilson heard a satisfactory explosion followed by screams and howls from the Brutes.

Wilson didn't stop however and ran through an opened door into a large skyscraper. Wilson saw this building earlier in the day. He Yuri and the rest of their squad had came through the building from a bridge located on the seventh floor leading into a second building.

Wilson remembered this well, they had been ambushed on the sixth floor by a group of Elites, only Yuri and Wilson had survived. Wilson pushed his memories aside, he had a job to do, he had to get out of the city alive. He ran up a flight of stairs and arrived in the second floor, where he continued running as fast as he could.
