is it possible for updating firmware to lower your throughput of a dsl modem/gateway? I just updated mine, and my throughput seems 5-10 Kbps slower than before i updated, according to pcpitstop.com (but on their forums, many people complain of getting lower speed results on the test lately, so i'm not sure if ,my speed has really been affected at all). These two light that normally blink simultaneously when there's network activity now blink differently (timing of the blink slightly dfferent, brightness of one light dimmer when blinking than before). I have Qwest DSL, ActionTec GT-701-WG DSL gateway. It might just be in my head, but it seems like i have to lead my shots a tiny bit more than before.

Its possible. You could try looking at the settings, see if theres something tha will help.

i looked at the settings, and i see two new settings that weren't there before the update:

IP QoS Management: from the looks of it, it seems to be a way to give certain connections (a source IP and a Destination IP) a higher bandwidth priority than others. I currently have that disabled.

Telnet Timeout Settings: I don't know what the hell this is. I have it on default, which is 30 minutes. I'm thinking i should have this disabled, but i don't really know.

On halo, my pings don't appear to be better or worse than before i updated.

i just reset my firmware to the factory defaults. the bandwidth hasn't changed with the firmware update. My IP address is different now; my external has changed and my internal can't go back to 192.168.0.2 via DHCP. I'm gonna call qwest and find out what the hell is going on..

I believe the timeout setting is the max time it will allow a connection to be active. It will restart the connection after that.

the setting disappeared after i reset the default firmware, so i don't have to worry about it. It sucks that DHCP is giving me 192.168.0.99 instead of 192.168.0.2. i had to manually set my IP to .99 to do the reset, so i think that has something to do with it. I had to redo my port forwarding and all of the other settings that were lost.

My advice, don't upgrade internet firmware unless there's a problem.
