i don't know. it might not be that simple. if another race just comes to the rescue that might not make for a verry good plot. chief wouldn't get to kick some booty.

In my opinion, the Prophets are using the other Covenant species. They must have some great mental power in order to get the Elites to create a treaty with them. I mean, If the Elites are so high and mighty, why would they need a treaty with some shrivled old aliens? Also, I think that the Hunters are the personal bodyguards for the Prophets. I know that in First Strike it said that the Elites were, but i remain unconvinced. Finally, the Forerunner obviously have some kind of connection with the Humans. How else do you explain the Forerunner writing on Reach?

I believe the prophets understand the tenacity of Elites and consider them the ultimate defense mechanism since they are simple minded but tactically brutal. Hunters may be intelligent but they are not as agile and quick witted as an Elite, it's like a 3 toed sloth vs. a jaguar.

you think that these Covenant believe that they get re-incarnated after they die?
For example if there was some sort of heroic grunt (not likely ;-)) that died they believe he will be re-incarnated as either a Jackal or Elite or something...
But if there was a coward in the ranks, when they die, they get put down to a Grunt or maybe a Covenant hell.
Upon reading that Covenant Primer thingo that Frankie put up, I realized that the Covenant were a lot like the Buddhist/Hindu religion (some one might have already said that) with their castes and such: Prophets & Elites > Hunter, Brutes and the like...
So that's where the re-incarnation idea came from...
Tell me what you think.

PLay on Legendary for a while, which is as close to a real war as you'll get in the game, and you'll find plenty of courageous Grunts.

All of the covenant love these forerunners as gods and thats what binds them together all of them have special traits that the other one needs. Prophets are the political and logistical part of them, elites are the basic warrior strong they form the leaders of the covenant army strong, agile, fast and they luv killing in battle so that works for the prophets who dont like pesky aliens getting in the way of foreunner artefacts. Hunters are their for a strange reason i have a feeling they dont devote their entire lives to the forerunners like the others do and then u have ur basic fanatical foot soldiers (grunts and jackles) who make up the majority of the covenant population and theres no better soldier than a fanaticle one.

i dont think that the grunts are fanatical, even on legendary they lose their heads quickly if you really frighten them. The grunts are more likely forced combatants, in a war of numbers.

It says they are temple guards, not Prophet guards. Read the Operation First Strike part more carefully. I specifies this is Chapter 33 on page 310.

" Also be advised, Chief, that there are ceremonial guards in this temple-a race we have not encountered before. Roughly translated from Covenant dialects, they are called ' Brutes.' "

That is on pg 310. This is on pg 339.

" Come closer, Tartarus, and report. " A ripple of shock passed through the Imperial Elite Protectors. They had never seen such a creature allowed so close to the Holy Ones. " Protectors, " the Prophet commanded. " Leave us. " Together the three hundred honor guards straightened, bowed, and filled out of the chamber.

But I doubt the Covenant would be foolish enough to send in one of their precious Prophets to a station that is about to jump to a comabt zone. Even if the first wave would kill off every thing.

there was already at least one prophet on board the truth and reconciliation, even with the flood (as told in the book), which the marines captured. now, this huge battlegroup may have been sent from the covenant homeworld, which means it could have been sent before the discovery of the flood. remember that halo was an extremely religious place for them, so the whole battlegroup could have been sent to assist in purgeing it from the 'infidels', or just to help retreive 'relics'... the point is, i doubt they knew they were sending it into combat, and 'gaurdian of the luminous key' , who was the 'visiting dignitary' sounds to me like a title a prophet would take.

Buddhist/Hindu religion (some one might have already said that) with their castes and such:

well, the caste system is extremely similair, and upon doing some research i discovered that the top caste in india was the preists, not the rulers/warriors, they were only second, which supports my theory about the political relationship between prophets and elites... the elites are the ones who are officially the rulers, as well as the highly skilled warriors, but the prophets hold power over religion, so the elites would naturally do as the prophets will.

Has anyone thought that even if the MC somehow does get all Cov off Earth and Mars(which we undoubtedly colonized by now) Earth will be unlivable? All the plasma that was rained down and all the fires and mayhem and chaos will render the Earths atmosphere extremily hostile? So I guess in a way we already lost Earth. Oh and sorry for going off topic I wont do it again so dont flame me. I just tought that this post was a sticky I could get that message out. Again, I am truly sorry.

I think this news will silence those that believe Forerunner and Humans are the same. Frankie did say utterly vanished race. And another tid bit of interesting information I think is necessary to express is the fact that Covenant freaking hate Humans guts and kill them for pleasure. Why would they kill a "godlike" species? Just something I thought I might say, if no one else was going to...

I know this was in a previous thread I have made, but I think it's relevant to this thread's discussion.
Here are my ideas on why the Covenant are attacking humans and what the Prophets aren't telling the elites.

In light of Frankie's article about the covenant and the posts afterwards, I have been struck with an idea.
Prophet ceremony and purpose is not generally known to the Covenant population, most of whom simply trust in their wisdom to further the goals and territory of the Covenant.

So the nature of Prophets is more or less unknown to the other Covenant castes. I believe it also said in one of the books that the Prophets live on a world where the Forerunner had lived before they abandoned it for unknown reasons. Now here is where I make a few assumptions. Lets say, for the sake of argument, that humans are or are at least related to the Forerunner. The Prophets obviously know a lot about the forerunner and are in control of the Covenant because of their understanding of and the mysticism of the long-departed Forerunner. Now, the Covenant run into a human ship and blow it up, why? The Covenant have been studying humanity (and vice versa) for a little while before contact was made according to FS. If the Prophets realized that humans are or atleast are the only/closest relatives of the Forerunner, then they'd a pretty good reason for eliminating them.

First of all, if all Covenant castes knew that the humans, with their inferior technology and mannerisms were direct decendants or were forerunners, then their faith in these 'godlike' beings would be shaken to the breaking point. The millenia of semi-worship of Forerunner and pursuit of their level of greatness would seem to be completely wasted if they all ended up as some lowly imperial race with sub-par technology. Plus, if the humans are Forerunner and are the result of some kind of self-induced apocalypse, then trying to attain their level of greatness through the Prophets guidance would be folly because it would only lead to their own destruction. The Prophets are ultimately dependent upon the other races to keep themselved defended, and without those races loyalty, they are vulnerable to the same kind of extinction they pose to humans.

Now, the Prophets realize this before any of the other Covenant (or they assassinate anyone else who knew the truth. Remember in Halo:The Flood when Zammamme goes through all the security checks because of recent assassinations?) and the concequences of the rest of the Covenant knowing the truth. They decide to protect their position as the head of the Covenant and maintain the enigmatic nature of their Forerunner idols by destroying any and all evidence that they may be these newfound humans. That would explain why they go to such great lengths to destroy every single human and their buidings on every single planet they inhabit while maintaining their phoney motive of pursuing forerunner relics and killing the infidels who have set up camp on top of them.

Frankie's Covenant info hints that there will be Civil War among the Covenant races (the evidence is so great it screams at us). The elites aren't keen on the idea of protecting and listening to the Prophets in the first place because they'd much rather just kill than wait for a purpose, so how loyal would they be when they realized that Prophet dogma and religion was all a lie?

Oh yeah just to point something out. First contact was made at Harvest. It was more or less the entire planet that got first contact, not a ship, from a plasma bolt before any real crap happened. Still I'm guessing some radio transmissions were recieved/ intercepted by the Covenant before they glassed us. But it probably was next to nothing considering them.
