Expect wimpy updates for a while, I'm behind in my writing.
Simmons had made an extensive study into the logistics of his Company as soon as he received command. There was only one active ODST battalion in the whole UNSC, and here was Simmons commanding one of its six Companies. Charlie Company had been commanded by a Captain Ackerson a while ago, but he had left suddenly and they had been floating around lately. With Simmons in command they were getting back in shape. There were four platoons, the 89th, 90th, and 91st were standard ODST rifle platoons and the 92nd was the first ODST weapons platoon. Simmons kept direct command of the 89th, Puller headed the 90th, and while there was a Lieutenant in the 91st, he had quickly realized that Dominique knew more than he could ever hope to. O’Donnell was the Sergeant in the weapons platoon, and he got to write the Chapter in the Marine Handbook labeled ‘ODST Weapons Platoon.’ He took the job seriously, stopping at seemingly random intervals to write down notes in his little book.
The role of company commander weighed Simmons down considerably in the time department. He couldn’t find the time to report to battalion HQ, train his men, and live a life at the same time. But, he thought, I never had much of a social life anyway. Battalion Commander was a Lieutenant Colonel Cole. He had spearheaded the ODST movement a few years ago, and would tell anyone who would stand still about it. Simmons had been foolish enough to stand still the first day and got the whole story.
Cole believed he was the descendent of LTC Robert Cole of the ancient 101st Airborne. Fact was that he and his brother, Admiral Cole, were in fact related to the obscure hero, on their mother’s side. He said the idea for modern day paratroopers came to him in a dream and he started his crusade the next day. He needed a proposal to submit to the R&D people, but he didn’t know where to turn. Then Doctor Catherine Halsey busted into his office one day and slapped the whole shebang right on his desk. He got the program under way in no time and here we are. After the tale, Cole looked long and hard at Simmons.
“You know what, you’re that kid Halsey made me accept. Here I am with just twenty four platoons in all and in walks Halsey like the day she gave me the proposal, not so much as a knock. ‘I want this kid to command a platoon’ she says. ‘We’ll call it even’ she says. Well, I couldn’t say no, but I was skeptical. I’ve been working on this thing for three years, training guys, and I have to give up a command to a kid who’s never so much as heard of the ODST’s before. And now look at ya! Best platoon in the battalion and Company Commander in less than a year. Let me tell you personally. You earned this promotion. It wasn’t some gift from above. You’ve done good work thus far kid, keep it up.”
