As he jogged the blood pumped in Simmons’ ears. He could hear the Covenant closing in behind him. He felt their presence even though they were kilometers away. He knew even his augmented senses couldn’t really hear them unless there were hundreds of them stampeding this way. He didn’t even know what his enemy looked like and here he was already running scared. The idea to stop and fight bounced around his head. He could die a hero and hold back the entire group until Marines were off the surface. He could be the first colonial cross recipient of the war. As these delusions of grandeur delighted Simmons, Puller pulled along side him.
“Boss, what’s the plan after we get Omni?” Puller’s voice drove Simmons from his dream world and he almost tripped over his own feet.
“Wha…Oh. We go back to building to building from there. It shouldn’t be far. That tower’s on the edge of the city.” Simmons laughed at himself for thinking about facing the Covenant on his own. They wouldn’t even have bothered to shoot him. They would have just trampled him. He was going to need his men to get out of this alive.
“Captain, this is Lieutenant Han.” The sound of engines provided a backdrop for the lieutenant’s transmission.
“Yes?”
“What’s your status sir? I’ve got only a few civilians left to send up and then we’ve got to go.” Lieutenant Han had clearly had a rough go of it so far.
“We’ll be on the tarmac in twenty minutes. The Covenant will be there in thirty.”
“Jesus, are you serious sir?”
“Yes Lieutenant. There on are tails right now. Tell those pilots to be ready to roll.” Tardiness from the flyboys was the last thing Simmons needed right now.
“Will do sir. Hurry.”
“Omni, give me one last report on the Covenant and then get down to the ground floor and wait for us.”
“There’s at least three hundred of ‘em just running down the same street you’re on now. They’re at extreme range but I’m glad to report they are susceptible to bullets.”
“Save your ammo. We might need it later. So you’re saying there’s none anywhere but on this street?”
“As far as I can see. We’ve checked everywhere but we can’t see any. We’ll see you in a minute.” Omni turned off his mike and hit his acknowledgement button and Simmons went right on running.
