1427 Hours, December 19, 2525(Military Calendar)/ Just outside the Titan Colony Municipal Airfield
Simmons didn’t even stop to greet Omni as they passed the tower the sniper had occupied. He and privates McKay and James just fell into pace behind Simmons and the rest. Building to building wasn’t going to get them off this planet fast enough. They were going to sprint the last lap.
“Captain, we’ve just been hit. One of their Dropships I guess. I’ve lost two men and one of the Pelican’s is hit. They say we need ten more minutes. If they get into the open field I don’t think we can take that many. All the other companies have already evacuated. We’re all that’s left. Poor Sanchez and Todd…” Lieutenant Han had never been in combat before and until now had never lost a soldier. She was a good leader but she needed to know when was the right time to mourn.
“Roger that Lieutenant. We’re going to hold them here. Send everyone up but the last Pelican. That means you too. Get your men out of here as soon as the last civilians are gone. That’s an order.” Simmons ended the transmission abruptly and stopped running. “Halt. Lieutenant Han says she needs ten minutes, so we’ve got to buy it for her. We can’t let the Covenant get to the airfield so we’ll fight them here. Puller, O’Donnell, take four and set up across the street. Fiurah and Dominique with me in here.”
Simmons looked back the way he had come and saw it was the perfect place for an ambush. Or at least as perfect as he was going to find. He turned around and saw he was at the hotel, only three hundred yards from the nearest Pelican. As Simmons entered the hotel lobby he grabbed a large oaken table and put it up against the window. Dominique and Fiurah were struggling with a similar table near the other window and they just stared at their commanding officer. After they had set up, Simmons sat behind his table and just listened. He could here the running mob, but he could hear a more distinct sound. Someone was breathing heavily. Nearby.
A glance told Simmons it wasn’t Dominique or Fiurah, so he listened harder. It was coming from the back of the lobby. Simmons motioned for them to pay attention and he went to investigate. He primed his weapon quietly and walked around a pillar as if to relieve himself. Then he sprung out and jumped clear across the lobby to where he had heard the noise. He turned on his flashlight and blinded the victim expecting an alien freak. Instead he was pointing his rifle at a crying woman with a baby.
He put his rifle down and for the second time today his chin dropped. The woman got up and started hitting him furiously, yelling. Puzzled, Simmons realized that with his drop helmet and full uniform he must look like an alien to this woman. He removed his helmet and tried to calm her down. “Ma’am, we’re the Marines. We’re here to protect you.”
“Thank God,” she cried. “I thought everyone had left.” She fell into Simmons’ arms and nearly passed out. Her baby was asleep in her arms.
“Ma’am, what’s your name? What are you doing here?” Simmons knew he didn’t have much time but he was curious.
“I’m Kate,” she said. She was very attractive, no older than Simmons. “I’d been waiting in line all day to get evacuated when that purple thing came and started shooting. There was nowhere to hide out on the runway, so I ran in here. I thought everyone had left without us.” She was very near falling into shock, so Simmons half carried her over to the front of the lobby.
“It’s too dangerous for you to go out there now, but as soon as possible, we’ll get you aboard a ship. Oh, I’m Captain Simmons, that’s Sergeant Dominique. Now you stay with Corpsman Fiurah here and we’ll do our best to help you.” Fiurah started chatting with her and she relaxed. Simmons was surprised that the poor woman had had the strength to hit him. She was clearly exhausted and frightened, but she had a certain determination in her eyes.
Suddenly, Omni’s rifle rang out from across the street. Rapidly. Mainly because he didn’t have to aim. Within a few minutes the first Covenant could be seen running like dogs. The wave of enemies filled the entire street. When one would be hit the rest just trampled him and kept running. They didn’t return fire on Omni so Simmons ordered his men to open fire. The Marines fired for all they were worth, but the enemy just kept coming. Kate even placed her baby on the floor and stood looking at the slaughter and the stampede.
No matter how many they hit, the rest kept coming. Simmons estimated they had killed a hundred before they stopped. Then they all blindly fired the same weapon Simmons was shown on the Spartan’s video. It was a hundred miniature green suns flying every which way. Kate just stared at the incoming fire while the Marines sought cover. Dominique noticed she was still standing and he jumped to push her down. He succeeded in saving her, but at a cost.
