The two crashed to the floor, and when the woman rose to her hands and knees she noticed Dominique had taken a round to the chest. She rushed over to him and screamed. Fiurah dashed over and tore away Dominique’s shirt. Simmons ordered a returning volley and glanced back. Dominique was bleeding profusely and most of his chest was burnt and cracked. Fiurah was swearing nonstop as he worked to save his friend but everyone in the room knew it was no use. Kate held his head up in her lap in thanks and Simmons handed his rifle to Fiurah and stooped low.
“Toughen up sergeant. The medics on board ship will have that fixed up in no time.” Even as Simmons spoke he heard his voice start to give out.
“I’m so sorry. I’m sorry…” Kate patted Dominique’s head and cried.
“Sir. It’s been an honor serving with you…” Dominique coughed loudly and groaned.
“Stow that talk soldier.” Now Simmons was rapidly losing control of his voice.
“No sir. I want you to say you’ll look after my men and see this woman to safety sir.”
“You know I will Marine.”
“It’s been a pleasure knowing you sir. I know that you’re gonna be a hero in this war sir. I’m just sorry I won’t be here to see it and congratulate you.”
“You’re a fabulous Marine Dominique. You can pull through this.”
“You know that’s not true sir.”
“Thank you so much Sergeant Dominique.” Kate realized what Dominique had done and she could barely utter her goodbye before she began crying again.
“Please don’t go Dominique.”
“I’m sorry sir.” And with that he laid back, closed his eyes and sighed. Fiurah dropped the rifle and began trying to resuscitate, but Dominique was gone.
Simmons then gave a cry like a wounded bear and it was at that point that the Marines really noticed he was more then human. He grabbed his rifle and ran into the open. The Covenant troops were fifty yards down the street and Simmons began sprinting towards them, firing as he went. Twenty of them hit the ground before Simmons was within ten yards. The Marines just sat and watched as their superior did what no good soldier does. Dominique’s death had broken Simmons and now he was just an animal. When his rifle ran out of ammo he slung it and pulled out his pistol and began firing it off. Twelve more bodies hit the ground. All this happened in the span of twenty seconds. There were still a hundred of the Covenant in the street, but this yelling creature that killed like a machine was more than they were disciplined for. They turned and ran as a group, many yelling and dropping their weapons.
Simmons chased them a whole block until he realized he had stopped shooting and they were still dropping. Soon of the hundred he had assaulted, none remained. Then the Spartans stepped out of the shadows and Simmons realized where he was and what he had done. “That was not a sound strategy Captain.” Fred’s voice was a welcome sound and helped return Simmons to reality.
“You’re right. One of my men was hit and I lost it. It was foolish of me. Are there any more? Are my men okay?” Simmons had just killed thirty enemy soldiers on his own, but now he was just tired.
“The colony is secured but there are more Dropships inbound. We need to move Captain.” John was wearing the Mjolnir armor, as were Fred and the rest of the Spartans.
“Roger that. Back this way.”
The Marines had begun their march to the Pelicans when they caught site of the Spartans. They were speechless, and the Spartans returned the favor. They checked with Simmons and went to their own drop ship. They were airborne before Simmons had a chance to speak with Puller.
“He’s dead Captain. Fiurah says there was nothing we could do.” Puller hung his head and mumbled sadly.
“I know. Get the men aboard the Pelican and put Sergeant Dominique on the cabin floor. We’re not leaving him here. Where’s the civilian?” Simmons played the emotionless commander for his men but inside he was ready to break down.
“She’s already aboard sir.”
“Good, let’s hurry up. The Spartans said there were more Covenant inbound.”
Simmons sat in the front of the drop ship leaning against the divider to the cabin. Kate and her baby sat next to him. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to be trouble.” She was very sad for Dominique, and so was Simmons.
“That’s okay ma’am. It’s not your fault. The Sergeant was glad to know he died saving another.”
“Did you know him well?”
“Yes. He was my company sergeant. He was my friend.”
“I’m very sorry.” After Simmons went back to staring into space, Kate began to doze and soon she was asleep on Simmons’ shoulder. He looked down at her expecting to hate her for her stupid action, but he knew she hadn’t done it on purpose. And Dominique had been happy to know she was safe. No, he thought. He didn’t hate this woman. And with her on his shoulder, he fell asleep too.
