“Sir, its Bailey. Admiral Cole has the signal now. We are relieved to the airfield. But uh, well…” Bailey was clearly holding something back.
“What is it Lieutenant?” Now was not the time for secrets.
“Things did not sound good upstairs sir. I reckon we need to hurry.”
“Fiurah! Where’s that route? We need to go now!” The sooner they left the system the better for all involved.
“Too late boss.” Omni’s voice was stone cold, and it sank straight to the pit of Simmons’ stomach. “I’m counting twenty, no, twenty two Dropships on the far side of the city. Grid…” Simmons heard McKay and Omni arguing about the coordinates, “…14.”
“That’s the grain field. They could land that whole force at once.” Fiurah had brought the map and outlined the route.
“Ok, Bailey take the Warthogs and go now. Puller and Dominique on me. Whoever can’t fit into the Hogs will meet me in the residential building in two minutes.” As soon as Simmons finished his sentence a purple, U-shaped aircraft appeared and began firing a plasma weapon on the Warthogs. The entire platoon opened fire immediately accompanied by the Warthogs. Except for the one that got hit. The plasma washed over it and it exploded in seconds. Luckily Puller and Fiurah had been called away or they would have fried. With the amassed fire of the platoons and the Warthogs Simmons was surprised the Covenant ship stayed aloft. It took O’Donnell and his rockets to put the thing down. This was a close call but with no fatalities, the platoons were still ready to move.
As Simmons watched vehicle after vehicle drive to the airfield, the number of men around him dwindled. Since the Warthogs were considered the safer option, the ranking officers volunteered to hump it. Simmons, Puller, Dominique, O’Donnell, and Fiurah were accompanied by only four other men. Speed was their weapon, and they were going to need it if Covenant forces were on the ground.
“Okay, it’s not far to the airfield, and Omni’s position is on the way, so we’ll meet up with him and get out of here. I don’t want to get hit with another one of those gun ships, so we’ll go building to building. Let’s go.” These were Simmons’ best men. If they could stay moving they wouldn’t have any problems. “Dominique, take point, O’Donnell pull up the rear. We gotta go now.” Fiurah had said it was only three kilometers from the city center to the airfield. But Simmons had had enough of these milk runs. Every time he got an assignment he shrugged of the consequences of failure. Well not this time. He resolved to get all of these men to the airfield alive.
Dominique tried the door to the residential building, but it was locked so he looked back at Simmons who nodded. Sgt. Dominique quickly proceeded to kick the door in. After O’Donnell had backed in they proceeded to the next room. “Oh great!” Fiurah wasn’t one for shouting so when he did everyone turned to face him. “These plans say all the buildings aren’t connected. I figured we’d just go apartment to apartment. Now we’ll have to go to the street to get to the next building.”
Simmons opened a space in the shades in the window and peered out onto the street. It was your typical fare. Two-lane road, sidewalks on both sides, the occasional fire hydrant. But there were no cars, and as such no cover. If they had to go out into the street for long they were going to be in trouble. “We’ll only go into the street when necessary. How long until then?” Simmons did not feel like being ambushed.
“About five more rooms.” Fiurah had pulled out the map and double-checked it before answering. “I guess it’ll take us maybe two hours to reach the airfield at this rate.”
“We don’t have that kind of time. Omni?” Simmons began forming his own plan.
“Yes boss?”
“Is the area clear from our position to yours? If so we’re just going to have to run for it.”
“Well yeah boss, but that’s a long way. Are you sure?” Omni had lost his normal determination, and that was not what Simmons needed right now.
“Just tell me when the Covenant forces will be a threat to us.”
“Not for twenty minutes. I can see them moving but they all seem to be on foot. Its weird, why park on the other side of the city and move on foot…?”
“Marines, on the street, now! We’re running to Omni’s position double time.”
Not one to hesitate, Dominique kicked down the door to the street and started running. The rest followed suit with Simmons urging them on and O’Donnell closed what was left of the door on his way out.
