This is not the update, it is just another short story, set on Halo
D + 152:32:25 (Corporal Bennett’s Mission Clock) /
5 clicks from Alpha base
Corporal Bennett had been assigned Recon duty. He didn’t like it, but he was an ODST, and ODSTs follow orders. So here he was, making a path through Halo’s forests, the point man for a 12-man squad. They had been sent off after Silva’s A.I., Wellsley, had detected brief Covenant transmissions in the area. All Bennett was supposed to do was scout out the area, and return back to base. The task was easy enough, but it still had its hazards. Silva couldn’t spare any more men, but if they actually met up with a covenant force, they would be hard pressed to get out alive.
Therefore, Bennett hoped Wellsley’s information was wrong, and that there was nothing awaiting him. As he began to think it was safe to turn back, Plasma fire erupted around him. He signaled to the squad, and they formed a defensive square, with three meters of space between each man, and they sunk into the dense forest. Bennett soon realized the Plasma was not directed at them, but there was a firefight going on ahead. However, there was no sound of Human weaponry, and Bennett knew there wasn’t anyone else out here.
He began to silently chuckle, figuring the Covenant was having a little civil war, but he signaled to his squad to stay put, and slowly advanced to get a better look. The sound of Plasma began to grow louder, as did the screams of Covenant troops. However, it was another sound that made the Corporal uneasy; beastly growls erupted from all around him. He couldn’t see the threat, but that didn’t stop him from raising his MA5B assault rifle, and begin to back up.
That’s when he got his first glimpse of the monsters. A grunt was thrown into a clearing ahead of Bennett, and he watched as a horrendous figure emerged shortly after. It vaguely resembled a covenant elite, but it was brown and yellow, and small tentacles sprouted from its disfigured head. At the sight of it, Bennett nearly vomited, but he held it in and double-timed it back to his squad’s position.
When he arrived, he ordered them to close ranks, and quickly retreat; there was no time to answer questions. The men did as they were ordered, and Bennett covered their six. He prayed that the monsters would stay with the covenant, and he would get out of here unscathed. Sadly, as they passed through a small clearing, one of the monsters leaped out at them.
The ODSTs barely had time to react, but one of them was able to hit the beast with half a clip of 7.62mm armor piercing rounds, and tore it to shreds. As the first monster landed on the ground, three more jumped onto the marines. Bennett took one out, and watched as another was met by an M90 tactical shotgun. The third monster latched onto a Marine and brought him to the ground, only to have six rounds from an M6C tear through it. The entrapped Marine rolled the thing off him, and slowly got up.
He was bleeding in several places, and was covered in the monsters fluids, but he gave Bennett a thumbs-up, and they continued onward. Bennett wished to contact Alpha Base, but he knew he was out of range for his COM system to reach any UNSC forces. So they were alone in an unfamiliar area, being stalked by unknown assailants, and they were more than likely outnumbered. Bennett thought he couldn’t have drawn a shorter straw.
With only twenty meters until they reached open fields, they encountered the monsters again. This time, six of them jumped at the unit at once. Two were taken out before they reached the ground, but the four remaining each latched onto a Marine, and attempted to devour them. Bennett luckily avoided being targeted, and instead focused on freeing a Private from one of the Beast’s grasp. He pulled out his combat knife, and slashed into the Monster’s head, but it continued to assail the Marine. Bennett thrust the knife into the creature’s chest, and it ceased to move.
“Aim for their chests!” Bennett screamed, and he brought another one down with his MA5B. “Status?” Bennett said, after the creatures where dealt with.
“Pollard’s dead, sir,” was the response from one of the Marines. Bennett took a quick glance at deceased Marine, and shuddered.
“Strip him off his ammo,” Bennett ordered. He knew it was heartless and wrong to leave the dead man here to been a meal for these monsters, but he couldn’t sacrifice anyone else by having them carry his remains. Instead, Bennett took Pollard’s dog tags, and said a quick prayer. Two of the Marines hid his body in the dense foliage, and the squad continued on.
Once they exited the forest, Bennett knew they were safe from the monsters, but now they were in serious danger of a covenant attack. The men double-timed it towards Alpha Base, but Bennett didn’t think it was going to change their fate; either the Covenant were coming, or they aren’t. And eleven men wouldn’t stop them if they were. Instead, Bennett told the men to stop, and began to open a COM channel to Alpha Base. However, he knew it was unnecessary, he could hear the roar of a Pelican’s engines, and he knew help had arrived.
Or at least, he thought it was the sound of a Pelican’s engines.
