I will have to go with Doom. I like marathon, but I didn't think it was as good as doom. What do you think?

Edit: woops, I put clasic lol. typo

I voted Marathon. I do not like doom's setting. If you included Wolfenstein 3D I would have said that one (even though in the later game I ave read it gets about as freaky as doom.) ^_^ That is, if I recall correctly, the first First-Person Shooter I ever played (I only had the Shareware version,) so naturally, that gives it a special quality.

MArathon reminds me, to a degree, of System Shock 2. I never did beat that game. Came close, then lost the save (did that with Final Fantasy Tactics too, that sucked more, I think) that made me *really* mad. Eh, I'll get it one day!

Yeah, that whole story that goes further than "You're in hell. Get out!"* is a real drag.

Oh, and gameplay that consists entirely of "Kill a few hundred monsters, get a red key, kill a few more monsters, get a green key, kill a few more hundred monsters, get a blue key, kill a few more monsters, enter elevator" repeated about 400 times is truly inspired. ;)

Im more of a Doom person. The weapons in Doom are better. But the best thing about Doom is that there are alot more bosses. The enimies are much cooler.

  • 08.02.2004 7:17 AM PDT

Oh yeah, I forgot about the "bosses". :D

The thing with Marathon was that it had no bosses. Bosses are like a way of making a game challenging without any effort on the part of the designer, and no enhancement of the gameplay for the end user.

Everything about Marathon was perfect. The weapons were much better - I don't see dual shotguns in Doom.

"Doom" is a classic that everyone knows about. "Marathon" is more of a cult-classic. So I'll have to vote "Doom."

the wording is intresting in that poll... to me 'classic' means an old game that was good but has now gotten to the point that it's only value is that of nostalgia... Doom was great, but its gfameplay is not competetive with modern FPSes... while marathon is still one of my favorite games. (and to the person who said the doom weapons were better, i wanna know why... I like the chainsaw and the plasma gun more, but other than that; its all for marathon)

Ach! Was ist los?

#include disclaimer.h

d00m is a game that every average (This space intentionally left blank.) has played.

Marathon is a game for enlightened people who actually care about storyline and meaning.

And while we're on the subject: why can't Idiot^H^H^H Software come up with some new ideas, instead of rehashing old ones? *Sets fire to a huge pile of DOOM 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein boxes.*

Regarding the people who voted for d00m: if you voted for it, then why are you even here? What side will you choose when it comes to DOOM 3 vs. Halo 2?

That's a much different question because most people are on here for the sole purpose of learning about H2.

exactly. I, personally, will be getting both games. And about which game I will choose, I will have to play through both games to find out.

I can't believe this vote is even close on a Bungie.net thread.
Doom was the first in a long line of FPS games that I've played, and
I used to think Doom was it as far as old school FPS games go,
until I played Marathon. I played Marathon 9 years after the game was
released, and I think it was one of the best FPS games ever by
today's standards. People loved Half-Life because it had a story with
a brain and hailed it as the best FPS yet, but no one thought of
Marathon who had an even better, more complex story and was
made years earlier. If I had anything remotely negative to say about
Marathon I would say it was ahead of it's time, and the only reason
Doom is held with such high praise is because more people played
it due to the PC platform.

I'll just compile most of the reasons Marathon is better than d00m.
First and foremost: Marathon has the best story EVAR! Doom has no story.
Marathon doesn't have stupid bosses, d00m has stupid bosses.
Marathon has more and cooler guns.
Some of Doom's enemies take hundreds of rockets to kill, Marathon has realistic enemies, and remains challenging.
In Marathon you have actual objectives ie: Kill Cyborg controller, close airlocks etc. d00m is just kill, get key, kill, get key, kill...
Marathon has better graphics.
Marathon has dual wielding.
In Marathon, you can look up and down.
In Marathon, there's reloading.
You don't slide across the floor in Marathon.
You can only save at pattern buffers in Marathon, making it more challenging.
Marathon has terminals.
Marathon has awesome physics.
Marathon has personality.
Marathon has carnage.
Marathon has better atmosphere.
Marathon has netgames.
Marathon has BoBs to kill.

Well for a game to be "clasic" (sic), it has to be good right? Doom sucked, I never liked it, I thought wolfenstein was much cooler. Marathon was much more of a game than Doom 3 will be as far as I'm concerned. i.d. can lick mah nutz!

I'm certifiable.

Y'know what? I refuse to choose.

I loved Doom. I played it and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of gameplay, even when I got frustrated at trying to solve one of the puzzles. The graphics astounded me at the time, as did the first-person camera movement. It really is a classic game, one of the greats of its vintage.

I only started playing Marathon two weeks ago, but I read the Story Page last December/January IIRC. I thoroughly enjoy the complex storyline and the use of the terminals not only to drive plot but to encourage further exploration of the levels. It really is a classic game, one of the greats of its vintage.

Which had greater impact? Probably Doom, because it was built for the more widely spread PC platform.

Which has greater endurance? Probably Marathon, for the storyline and for the editing suite that allows you to generate new levels and even new weapons and characters.

I like 'em both. So I'm not choosing between them.

Lt Devon basically hit the nail on the head with a few small corrections.
The Cyberdemon was arguably a decent boss. Hearing the footsteps for the first time and seeing it for the first time is one of the scarier moments in gaming history.
Technically, Doom has 1 more weapon than Marathon
Marathon- Fist, Pistol, Fusion Pistol, AR, SPNKR, TOZT, Alien Gun
Doom- Fist, Chainsaw, Pistol, Shotgun, Chaingun, Rocket Launcher, Plasma Rifle, BFG 9000
However, many of Marathon's guns have secondary firing modes or can be dual wielded and all have to be reloaded, while Doom doesn't even get into reloading. Also, You need to use your brain to use weapons in Marathon. Many times, there is a best weapon for a situation. Doom is summed up in "use small gun until you find bigger gun and don't shoot the rocket launcher off in your face".
Doom technically has a story, but to mention it in the same room as Marathon would be like telling a group of quadriplegics play baseball against the New York Yankees. However, as I mentioned before, these are very small differences and don't change the verdict. I've played both games a lot and anyone who plays both and claims to be a real gamer must claim that Marathon is superior. There is just no other choice unless one enjoys lying to himself.
I would go as far as to say that if Marathon had come out on Mac and PC simultaneously or even Mac first and PC a litle later, this conversation would never have come up. PC gamers merely missed the boat because Marathon never sailed down their river.

doom was good, marathon was better. thats all I have to say. honestly now, how many of you who voted for doom actually played marathon? if you have played both, I dont see how you can like doom more. sure, it was great, but marathon had all kinds of crazy stuff like allies and a story and a motion tracker. I am so suprised no one has commented on the motion tracker yet. with doom, you had to guess where the enemy was... marathon; a quick glance will give you the exact location.
