The End

I have watched them for a time that I dare not declare. That is how the years have ebbed away at my fractured state of mind. I fear that should I utter the passing years, all will be at an end. But that will come in due course and in a manner of my own choosing. But unlike me, this wonderful species has little choice, as far as their departure is concerned, for the few hours that remain. This world, like the many before, will fall and I will be here to watch it -- to bear witness to slaughter as one race destroys another, but there is hope for them. Hope for those that follow in our footsteps.

Watching them grow and learn, and discover has been the highlight of my life. I have seen many wonderful things, but that has been balanced by the terrors that haunt me from a past I still hold dear. But distance and time have all but removed that threat from any form of immediacy. But it does still remain. On this world, though, a more pressing issue presents itself -- the destruction of this bastion of defence and the loss of so many souls. Even though the death of this planet is near, I find myself captivated by the valiant efforts of those that remain, in the face of insurmountable odds.

The sky is filled with clouds that, until this morning, were drifting blissfully unaware across the moon-filled scenery above. Then the first light of day brought with it an alternative source of illumination, one that culminates in the death of millions. Now, though, the sky is an ashen curtain that obscures all but the brightest of flashes as they stab at the flesh of this world. A beautiful world once carved by nature is now carved by other means, plasma. Focussed beams of incandescent rage and hatred born from corruption. The reason why this hate-filled union of sentient life-forms wishes the destruction of another, less advanced species is born from lies. Lies that will, ultimately, bring about their downfall. I have seen it before, it is inevitable.

Bearing witness from the safety of this mountainous haven is all that keeps me here, alive at least. For this peak holds many secrets. I have contemplated the thought of helping those in peril, of providing them with weapons and technology to fend off this dark cloud of death, above. But I fear in doing so, at such an early stage of their development, I would only be adding to the bloodshed. They will emerge victorious one day, but by a path that they are forced to walk. Being on the edge, on the precipice, one step from total annihilation is what provides oneself with clarity -- perfect, untarnished and infinite clarity. Then they will be ready.

Until that time comes, I will be forced to wait, to see this world become nothing more than a glowing cinder, drifting in space. One day, though, when the fires have died and the smoke has cleared, this species will return and claim what is rightfully theirs...

...Reach.

Is this a short or will it be a series? Good work, by the way. I hope you write more, although I understand that you're busy.

Just a short, on a certain event.

Was it Mendicant Bias/Forerunner observing the battle of Reach?

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

I immediately thought of Mendicant Bias when I read this, I thought it was either him or a Sangheili's thoughts on the war.

I suppose you'll let the readers interpret it how we think? I really enjoyed reading this, it was mysterious and in the end we had ourselves knowing the worst.

Hope to see more Halo stuff from you again, Max. :)

Who can say, who can say?

Maybe it relates to something. Maybe it doesn't.

There could be more to come, and I must emphasise the could.

...There are secrets out there, one's that will change the face of our existence and those we swore to protect. For I have seen countless worlds burn, billions lost in a war we could not win, against an enemy we could not defeat.

Our species is thought to be nothing more than a distant whisper, words lost in the wind. But there is more. As our enemy sleeps, waiting for the slumber to wear, a new course is taken. One that will see them vanquished for all eternity. They were so sure...No, It was so sure of victory, that it thought the past lost to history. Their coming was born from reason. From need, a need to survive. And now that reason is far from guarded, as secrets often are. That reason is now our ally and its enemy.

They came. Not because of hunger or to feed on the many that dwell in this vast swirling cosmos. They came because they were afraid...

...Of something far more terrifying than they.

No, acnboy. Spartain Ken 15 is a lesser being. Much like the bacteria that lives in your shit.

My shit bacteria takes offense to that comparison.

Don't make me lel. You won't like me when I lel.

Ooooh, intriguing.

I didn't hink this would make it into the pinned topics. Doesn't seem popular enough. Not one for complaining, though.

It's an aspect of the Halo Universe I've always wanted to cover.

I could say but it would give too much away. Glad you're enjoying it, though.
