No.

There was a thread on it a LONG time ago, but it died.

I just have a question... What the hell happened to it? It wouldn't do any harm to release it seeing as it's a very outdated engine and would be of no practacle use beyond modding...

I'm just tired of Halo mods consisting of some new maps and some tag switching. Releasing a SC would allow people to be a lot more creative...

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Microsoft is never going to release the source code. Their entire business is built on owning everything. You're right though; the world would be a better place if it was released.

Postprocessing, dual wielding, melee/reload permutations, bloom, custom tags, normal maps on scenery, multi-team vehicles, vehicle boarding, bypassing all map limits, and other things are already developed or are being worked on. A new RC of OS is on the way.

You can do a lot of things with OS, but of course it has its limits. You can't give the game a whole new render engine or physics engine, but you can change the way things work inside the game. Syncing objects with OS is theoretically possible, but it was dropped because it kept crashing. If you wanted to give the UI planes a tilt like in Reach, or curve the UI planes to look like Halo 3, that's possible with some work. It's not the source code to the game, but it is a way to hook into the game engine and modify its memory.

:/

This modding community needs to be bigger.

I hope bungie's next game is more mod friendly.

Let there be CHAOS!

I would just be interested in the Halo source code for educational purposes. Unless of course the code is a complete mess like John Carmack's is.

It can't be that bad, considering how many free software games sprung from iD game engines. Then again, I've never read the code, so maybe I'm talking out of my ass.

It was a great engine, but the code is far from elegant.

Sawnose once remarked that the source code for HaloPC was on a box underneath his desk. He pats it lovingly from time to time.

Every time Sawnose accidentally kicks the build machine, a new heavies server is born.
