This is going out on a limb, but a perfectly logical purpose for the 'Bungie Aerospace' website, as well as the Activision deal and all the other stuff, is that they're starting up a MMO.
Before you're like "ZOMG THAZ NOT POSSIBLE", hear me out: Bungie signed on with Activision. Now, if they were planning to stick to their Xbox roots, they obviously would not have made that deal. They now have access to multiple gaming platforms.
Now, why would they make a completely different website for Aerospace? They could have just put it in it's own little section of Bungie.net, right? That would seem logical, unless they were planning for something big. Blizzard had to create a completely new website for WoW - the simple reason for this, is because of the traffic that goes through something like that. Ie, people renewing their accounts, people blabbing on the forums, etc etc. For MMOs, having a separate website specifically for the game is a must.
This is all speculation, of course. It seems like a plausible and possible explanation to recent events, however.
I've thought this too, but I've been waiting to bring it up until I had more evidence. I scan the jobs page a lot to see what Bungie is up to. Some of them have been filled, but there have been three seemingly odd types of positions. They have hired WAY too many server and IT specialists for a simple FPS game, UI designers, and a few language specialists.
An FPS game wouldn't need 5 or 6 more server programmers and IT specialists than Bungie currently has. One or two more might make sense, but 6 is a lot. And Bungie is hiring an entire team of UI designers, not just one more than they currently have. That's a lot of money to spend on UI design for an FPS game, but it's reasonable for an MMO game.
We'll see.
