I only have around $120 to spend, so I wanted to know the BEST card I can get for under $120. I don't have $200 or $500 to spend on a graphics card, so the X800 and 9800 cards are out of the question.

Can a normal 9600se run Halo at a decent FPS and still look good? I also wanted to get Doom III, Half Life 2, and Far Cry...could a 9600 run these games? (its hard to say for HL 2 b/c its not out yet, but I hear a very good card is needed for it)

if you want to run with a good speed and with good eye candy, go get a 9600 xt from mwave.com. 9600 se's arent good really because thier slower than the pro and xt. I have a 9600 xt with overdrive and everything is fine.

Well, considering a 9600XT is over his budget, he needs to get a 9600pro. This should be right in line with your budget. Heres a link from newegg.com

Ah screw it, here are all the ones that show up. As general help, we are on the dawn of a new gaming era (relatively speaking). Halo PC was the first game to really show this, but as being a rehash of Halo for Xbox, its potential was never fully realized as new games like Unreal Tournament 2004 came out, Halo PC was left. ANYWAYS, newer games like Doom3, Far Cry, and Half Life 2 deserve 256mb of ram for the huge amounts of textures they use. On higher end cards, it isnt as big of a deal as the cards are faster to cover this defecite (sp?) EX. the 6800nu. For a 9600pro, going with the 256mb model for only an extra $10 is pretty good. ou could try the NVIDIA line up, but overall, ATI is better, especially when it comes to Direct X 9 games. And dont touch the 9600se's, if you can afford not to. The se line if for the budget people, and as such, it is cut down in many ways, from lower clock speeds on the RAM and core, to only having a 64bit memory bus, the cards performance is severly hampered. If you were going to go this route, I would suggest getting a regular 9600 or a 9550. My 2cents.

Thank you for your 2 cents...i think i'll take em. I tried finding a "regular" 9600 and couldn't...I saw 9600se, 9600pro, and 9600 xt.

Is the 9550 a good card? Is it good enough to run Halo, Far Cry, Doom III, etc?

PS: I found this card...tell me if its good or not: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-1 02-3 20&de pa=0

The 9550 is a cut down version of the 9600. It also has a slower core speed and memory clock, but it fully supports DX9, and the Ge-Cube version is pretty damn good, as they include some very fast memory on it (relatively speaking). If you can find one for cheap, you could go with it, but I still would suggest at taking a look at the 9600pro w/256mb of ram. As I stated before, the future is upon us, and GPU's lead on the gaming industry has come to a close. You will need a top of the line gfx card to play new games with all the eye candy, but some of the newer old gen cards will be able to play them, but may not be as big as an experience.
