Another obvious question we should verify: you're running the full version of Halo, right? Not the demo?
Assuming you're not running the demo, if you suspect corrupted reg keys, I'd uninstall Halo completely (saved games and all), clean out the Halo directory in My Documents\My Games if it's still there, restart your computer to allow Uninstaller to remove any components it may not have been able to remove during uninstall, then run your reg cleaner, then check manually for any traces of Halo in the registry. After allllll that, reinstall. If that doesn't do the trick, I'm not sure what will. O_o;
Also, when you double click on the patch install file, does it take you through the install steps? Does everything appear to work properly? If so, you might just change the version number in the registry to 1.04, but I have no idea what this will do as far as the autodownloader is concerned. Also, If the patch instalation isn't actually instlaling properly, who knows what this do if you are actually allowed to join a server that's updated. *shrugs* But if you want to experiment, the reg path I'm thinking of is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Halo\Version
Hey... what am I talking about? Duh. Go download Halo Custom Edition! You should be playing that for multiplayer, anyway, seeing as how it's got so many benefits over regular halo PC. I mean, c'mon, you can play custom maps! ;)
You can keep regular Halo PC installed for the campaign mode (which is all it's good for) and use Halo Custom Edition for multiplayer. Once HCE is installed, it's completely independent from Halo PC and does not affect the original install in any way. A link to info and download mirrors for Halo Custom Edition can be found in my sig.
