way back to the point... the weapons that are attacking the PoA are actually fired out of giant towers on Halo's surface. when you play the second level, you come up to the first structure where Sgt. Johnson is and if you watch the centre of the building, you will see a giant blue bolt fire out of it towards the Autumn. This is what strikes the PoA at the end of the previous level.

they were main plasma cannos and the reason they didn't destroy the Pillar is beacuse of the titanim armor that was honey combed through out the ship. that makes it almost impossible to destroy. how ever read the books shound know this!

Maybe it is those shots that are fired from the structures on halo. You never know...

actually the pillar of autumn had already landed before your escape pos touches down. If you watch the movie you see the PoA zoom over the pod. Anyway those pulses are pointed directly towards the oppposite side of halo so i figure they help hold it together or something.
The blasts which strike the PoA are probably toned down ship to ship covenant plasma blasts. The PoA survived b/c of its reinforced armour and superstructure and b/c the covenant wanted to take it intact so they fired less powerful blasts that were aimed to disable not kill.

if those shots from the structures hold the ring together, why don't you a) see them in the cut-scenes during the game and b) see them in Halo II?

and why, if the shots were fired from covie ships, do thay appear to be coming from the ring when the PoA flies through it?

besides, the PoA hadn't actually landed until just before the chapter "family reunion" near the end of level 2, so the attacks from the ring could be directed at the PoA or any human ships (Pelicans, Longsword Fighters, etc.) still in orbit around the ring.

Or, perhaps the shots that fire out of the buildings are the rings defences, and they fire at any unidentified ships near the ring... human, covie, whatever. perhaps that's why the buildings are still firing into space after the PoA crashes... who knows?

Its often been speculated that the Beam towers are used during the main firing sequence. They all fire at once, big explosion in the middle where they all meet. They fire on other occasions as an exhaust to expel excess energy. They arent a close-range defense mechanism, they are the main Halo weapon itself.

But then those Beam towers. Another explanation to as they fire so often is simple. They look really really cool.

i don't know... the beam towers are located too close together in level 2 to be part of the main Halo weapon. just watch the cut-scene in halo II where the ring begins its firing sequence... the beams are well separated, not like the beam towers in level 2 of halo.

however, i cannot - at all - argue with you that the beam towers do indeed look cool.

A NEW THEORY...
perhaps the beam towers were never meant to do anything... when bungie made halo I, they probably dind't think or care what the towers did... as you said, they are probably there to just "look cool"
