Everyone seems to hate The Library...come on guys, The Library was genius. It was like a whole different game. Same rules, new stuff. The ludicrous amount of Flood almost bordered on comical...it became its own game with its own parameters. As an older Haloer, I found this level to be a perverse bunch of fun that made me rethink the game before the inter-species stuff took place. I can't be alone here...

The Library was a great mission.

Great place to practice Legendary too. Infact, doing that mission over and over is what made Halo 2, 3 and ODST so easy.

Yes, it was an awesome mission.

However, shortly after that I started having nightmares. Terrible nightmares. I'd wake up screaming and crying. I was about seven then, I think.

I think that many people ended up hating the library due to how hard it was and how unvaried the environment was. Personally it is one of my favorite levels due to it's difficulty. Guess I am just a glutton for punishment!

I enjoy the Library on Legendary very much. It's also one of few levels where you can actually see areaportals.

Its not that hard actually its really easy if you stay back and let ur enemy come to but make sure you have the shotgun and assault rife be aware of rocket flood they usually kill you the first time you see them because they neither get to close or to far away to kill before they kill you if you ever really notice that. It's possible fourth hardest level ever made in Halo Combat Evolved in my opinion easiest pillar of autumn on the legendary

Areaportals are used by developers to divide the levels loading areas, typically behind doors. So when you pass through a door and then walk, say, 500 yards away from it, the game 'deletes' what was behind the door, leading to either seeing a skybox or, because the Library has no skybox, a blue wall, until you trigger the game to load that area again. This person has had a similar experience.

If you want to experience the areaportal phenomenon for yourself, go up a few floors in The Library, look down into the central column (the one with the Index suspended in the beam) and look down to those huge doors that Spark opens for you, zoom in and you should see a blue screen. I'll try and get pictures soon.

Lighten Up

Yes, Library was good times. Running around in the dark with a shotgun, blowing up monsters... reminded me of earlier games like Doom and Duke Nukem.

It never bothered me that the level looked the same the whole way through, because sometimes, buildings do that. Especially buildings who's purpose is mainly for storage or maintenance. The fact that it was easy for me to get turned around and get lost, only added to the tension.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, guys. I didn't think I was alone. Being without Cortana for the (second) time...Having to rate Spark as to his (weird) reactions and dialogue...I thought this level was a great departure from the main format and a really cool way for Bungie to mess around with expectations. The old retreat and fire and look for shotgun with flashlight...awesome times.

-Sic transit gloria mundi

I didn't think it was bad at all.

There wasn't much scenic variety, but the desgin of it was good. The level design and the art design, combined to make it feel like a geniune Forerunner facility.

It wasn't hard either. Perhaps the enemy encounter points were a little bit more blurred than typical levels. But as long as you kept moving, and stopped to kill things only when necessary, it didn't take long to get through it.

Maybe people label it as "hard" because The Flood is the only enemy you can encounter, and they consciously asscoiate the fear of the flood with the difficulty of the level. In the end, the flood are easier to kill than the Covenant.
