That's thinkin!

  • 08.04.2004 9:40 AM PDT

Ironically, last night I was thinking how nice it would be if something like this was implemented. That way I wouldn't have to listen to all that crap mithander, Obi Wan Canoli, and davster spew out.

I don't want to tempt fate by mentioning his name "out loud".

He who must not be named.

Let's just say that if you messaged the webmaster you probably wouldn't get the kind of response you wanted.

Too late! Now you will all free my wrath... uh... well, maybe after lunch.

Anyway, a per user ignore list has a huge cost in performance - for the current level of users it probably could be done, but not for "Halo 2 levels".

Besides, an ignore list is what I call a "symptom solution." It only solves the symptoms of spammers. But it wouldn't work when they switch accounts. And the mods would still have to delete/lock their crap because there will always be a set of users who don't understand your ignore list feature.

I prefer to solve problems at the source. I have a few... creative ideas that I'm currently working on that have very good potential for making life much harder for anybody who can't seem to follow the code of conduct. One is a new moderator tool I call "Unleash Ninjas". They'll like that one. The other one is more... well, you won't notice it unless you deserve it, and we'll leave it at that.

Things of which will not be named

Man, that thing could get confusing though. Like if someone you blocked was a big part of a thread you were reading. People would be saying stuff, and replying to them and you'd be like "What?"

  • 08.04.2004 12:06 PM PDT

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Man, I'd love something like this. Even though he's gone, I'd definitely add Darkness 1282 to my ignore list (if there was one). He was the Troll King, in my opinion... a bad one... very, very bad.

Things like this make you wonder, though... Make you think "I wonder who has put me on their ignore list. Who out there hates my guts?"

I'm eagerly looking forward to see it in action.
Don't count on it. Unless you're a spammer.
Or was that question REALLY insulting and I should just sit still and await the throngs of blood-thirsty ninja?
Tom is preparing the ray now.

Sounds interesting Archronos. I hope the Pink-haired one isn't Zoe.

Achronos, I appreciate you taking the time to entertain the suggestion/idea. Thank you for responding. I understand the downside of addressing symptoms rather than the actual problems. The difficulty is both the core problem as well as the symptoms are mostly from kiddies acting like kiddies. It's very hard to come up with a technological solution to a human-nature problem.

True, but what we're talking about is making the consequences of violating the rules painful enough, as well as given the moderators more control over dealing out such punishment. There will always be spammers, but a lot of them do it because it is fun - make it not fun to be an -blam!- by unleashing some ninjas, and the less of a problem it is.

If I may, is this (the New Hotness) all custom-code or based on one of the "mothership's" products? If I squint really hard, I can see hints of SharePoint here and there that appears to have been hot-rodded. Or was that question REALLY insulting and I should just sit still and await the throngs of blood-thirsty ninja?

Sharepoint probably stole from us... hehehe. No, this is all custom code. The new 7th column is similar in functionality to the perl site at seventhcolumn.bungie.net, but none of its code or database schema will remain. The new forums were written by Ideal Science, and were based off their IdealBB product, except targeted at the C#/ASP.NET platform. Basically, if you buy their upcoming IdealBB.NET forum product, you get a forum product that was spec'd in collaboration with us, except it won't have my extensive customizations to it.

Aside from that though, the rest of the site is written by myself (on the backend code) and our old front-end developer, Claire (who works elsewhere in MS now). Our new front-end dev, Chris, will have his stuff showcased in the new 7th column and, uh... a different section. And, of course, Lorraine and Zoe continue to make everything look pretty.
