ODST's FTW!!!

Im having some issues with my NAT settings. I used to have a single Ethernet port modem in which I plugged my XBOX into and that was fine. I moved and got a wireless router. I plug my xbox straight into the 1st ethernet port. My NAT was moderate, with a dynamic IP. I set my IP Gateway with the suggested ports and I was able to get an open NAT. This lasted for about 3 weeks, then suddenly it was moderate again. I set a static IP with no ports open and it was strict, so I opened the ports for the static IP and its now moderate. I have tried using QoS to improve my connection and it didn;t really help so I disabled it. I also have had UPnP enabled at all times.

I am not going to use DMZ as theres like 5 computers connected wirelessy to my router.

Is there anything you can think of to help?

I'm assuming I have open NAT now because there is no "WARNING: you have moderate NAT the world will commence self-destruct sequence in 5,4,3..." after I do a Xbox LIVE Connection Test. But this is the only reason I assume I have Open NAT, because it's not complaining I have strict or moderate NAT. Is there anyway to look and see my NAT status, cause I'm looking and not finding it?

why is WPA so secure? I've never understood the difference between WEP and WPA

  • 09.02.2010 6:25 AM PDT

Sorry, but I don't exactly understand this, also I had open NAT today after having strict NAT since I set up my wireless router (which was just a few weeks ago). I changed about absolutely nothing at all. Only thing I touched is a firmware update but even then that was about three or four days ago. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be? My NAT went back to strict within just a hour or so after being open.

Also I plan to try this guide, but I don't fully understand where to type the port numbers. Would I type those into inbound port, or private port? Sorry I really can't think of any other way to word this properly.
Also another question, if I use the DMZ to allow Xbox live through, will I still be able to stay connected to the internet on my PC, and Xbox Live (on my 360) at the same time? I just ask since you mentioned that it has the same effects as plugging your 360 to your modem (which means you can't have both connected at a time).

Ok, I forwarded ports, and rebooted my router, the NAT settings were open for about an hour or so, and than I decided to do another XBL test connection just to see if it stayed, but it didn't it went right back to strict. Should I avoid doing multiple tests? Should I disable my UPNP (I have checked that it is enabled). I have also checked if any of the ports dissapeared, and sadly this is not the case either. Could the router I have be the one to blame, or what? I have a Belkin, don't know if that means much (just saying).

disable UPNP

Ok, thanks for the reply, going to try this later and see if this will fix the issue. Just two final questions though I think.
1.Will disabling the UPNP have any negative effects on my connection to the PC or its security?
2.If the issue was the UPNP, would it still be open (even for the short amount of time it has been open)? Wouldn't it just stay strict, and not change if that was the case? I'm not saying i'm doubting this, I honestly have no clue exactly what i'm doing so any way I thought I would just ask this for maybe future reference.
EDIT:I actually had to open ports 53 TCP, and 53 UPD in addition to 88 UPD, and 3074 UPD as well as 3074 TCP. After I did this I then had to enable UPNP, and than now I finally have a open NAT that seems like it will stay.

No offense intended in my response here, but I am a certified Cisco network engineer, most of what you said regarding using static IPs is completely wrong . Its a terrible idea to use static IP's and suggest people randomly change the last host octet in the private IP address. You could accidentally put yourself in the wrong subnet.

I have never understood the whole NAT thing on the XBOX. All NAT does is take a device like a 2nd computer or XBOX, and link it's private IP address to your public IP address that your router uses. If you dont use NAT then anything not directly connected to the router can communicate with the internet. So you are either using NAT or your not. I dont understand where they come up with moderate NAT. There is no such thing

The easy answer comparing WEP and WPA, is WEP uses a more simple algorythm than WPA. WPA takes more processor resourses to run but its also much more secure than WEP. WEP is fairly easy to hack, WPA is not

Looking for a group of people to play customs with.

Why is this in the Halo: Reach section? Could this also be applied to Halo 3 or is there another version or something.

I have two 360s that need the open NAT. I can get one to work fine with port forwarding but DMZ WILL NOT work for the other. Any idea why DMZ wont work? It doesnt do it even if nothing else is setup and I just enable DMZ to one of the boxes.

Static IP can actually make the situation worse. Let someone that's actually been trained in networking help out! First off, if you are having network problems, the very best basic tip you can do is to reset all the settings on your network. Reset your routers settings to the original and more importantly, check the manufacturer of your routers, modems, and network adapters for firmware updates.
Second, if you are on a wireless network like me, it is extremely important that you SECURE YOUR WIRELESS NETWORK! Follow your routers instructions to add a network password to your wireless equipment, you'll be glad you did and you don't know how easy it is for someone to access your internet and mess it up when you leave it unsecure. If you are not using the wireless capabilities of your router, turn the wireless settings off.

Also, if you have been on Xbox Live for 3 to 5 years or more like I have and you are still having NAT problems after that, it may be time to upgrade your equipment! Any hardware, a computer ,cellphone, routers, and network adapters, they just naturally go bad after time. Hardware can only operate at top performance for so long before it just goes shot and some of the circuitry begins to go bad! Buy a brand new router. The best router I've ever bought so far is the following:
http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Linksys-WRT400N-Dual-Band-Wireles s-N-Router/dp/B001SEL36M

There are improved versions of this router now and you may want something different if you're not using wireless, but if you are, this router rocks. Use the default settings, put a password on the router, and you are all set.
I know alot of people like to freak with ports and settings on routers thinking it will fix the NAT. 9 out of 10 times it will not. Networks today are built for dummies with alot of automatic settings to best utilize your internet connections already. Changing the settings will usually just make it worse.

Want a true blue open NAT connection with no hassle? Keep up to date with your router, modem, and adapters. If you don't know what you're doing, hire someone like Geek Squad to set it up for you. Lastly, if you are wireless, now is a great time to switch over to the wireless N connection if you haven't, it's twice the speed!

Better luck next time buddy.

I did everything you said and now my DNS is not able to recognize IP Adress. So my internet is not working, I had to go to my friend's house to post this... What should I do to put my internet up again?

  • 09.06.2010 11:35 AM PDT

This is your computer's local IP address. For your entire network the first three numbers, say 192.168.1, will be the same

But they aren't. What gives?

My internet connection is through a cricket usb aircard thing that I just stick into the side of my laptop. I usually don't ever yellow bar and for a month I have been largely satisfied with the speed and the lack of lag, but at times it's frustrating.

I connect my laptop to my xbox by using an ethernet cable. After I ran the test xbl test and read 'more info', it says my NAT type is moderate. Will these directions work for someone who doesn't have a router but just a 3g aircard like me?

lol, I made a thread on a website I am not allowed to say on how to open your NAT and it was sooooo much shorter than this. XD

I do not currently use a router. I wire directly from my modem to my Xbox or computer, and just switch depending on what I am doing. I still have Strict NAT, however, and I do not have the sort of options in my modem homepage that you described.

My first xbox live gamertag was Gangsta Tic but now I am Sir Tic after I lost the information with that account. I wish I could change my name to Sir Tic here.

Halo: CE & Halo 2 for both the xbox and PC. :)

I just want to say thanks! I've always had problems with my NAT for years till last night when I used this guide. Now I have a open NAT! Thanks a lot, you are awesome!

If they arent then you have devices that are not in the right subnet. The best thing you can do to fix that is to go back and reset your settings for dynamic ip address and do a hard reboot of the hardware
