Please sir, I want some moa.

Help!

Okay, so I've had Open NAT for H3 up until today (and the first thread I saw when I got on today was this... cosmic :p). Today I tried joining a co-op Campaign game with a friend, and it wouldn't let me. It said my NAT settings were moderate. It says the same thing when I try matchmaking.

So I turned off my xbox and went on bungie.net (what else would I do with H3 NAT messed up?). I had already made my computers IP address static for some PC gaming, so I went through the steps you listed and made a static IP for the xbox. I connect to XBL, everything works. Then I forward all the ports you listed, and tried testing twice. It still said moderate. I looked in FAQ, saw the extra 2 ports, and forwarded those as well. Still nothing. I hadn't wanted to use DMZ, since you said that might invite hackers, but I tried it because port forwarding wasn't working. Still moderate while on DMZ (I had removed the forwarded ports from before, since you said those and DMZ canceled each other out). So then I went ahead and tried connecting my xbox straight to the modem with my ethernet cable, but when I test the connection, it keeps failing on the "Network" test part.

It might be my ISP, since I haven't been able to test with modem, but I've had Open NAT before today, and I didn't change ISP overnight.

Anything at all? I've done everything in your OP...

Awesome work, you're covering all the bases in the guide that I could've blamed it on. In order to get the xbox working directly from the modem, you need to enter in some more details which are on the router since it usually performs the function of being a gateway for the webnet- ISP's username and password for example.

That's all well and good but try getting 2 xbox consoles with open NATs on the same network. It heavily depends on UPNP, if your router is xbox live compatable and many other features.

There's no one solid fix for it.

Are you saying this FAQ is false?

I'd like to connect more than one xbox on my network to xbox live.

I see that you've noticed that your router won't allow you to open the same port for two different xboxes. We can work around this:
If you have two, set both xboxes to static IP and make one DMZ and the other port forwarded. If you have even more, You will need to use port triggering, which is outside of my jurisdiction but not portforward.com's

Um, when i go to 'Test Xbox LIVE Connection' It shows:
Xbox 360 ooOoo Network ooOoo Internet ooOoo XBOX LIVE

There is no NAT :(
Help will be much appreciated.

Ok that's it, I'm bolding the relevant sentence now. If your NAT is open (That is, no NAT error appears) You are good, stop reading the guide, you have no problem.

I think it's worthwhile noting, that UK players with BT may have difficulty opening their NAT.

This is easily fixed by changing the DNS number in the xbox 360 settings tab from their routers DNS number, to the Xbox DNS number

I have a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54G). Before, I was moderate or strict NAT. I found the original "Opening NAT for Dummies" thread and I used it. I did everything I could, the ports, the static IP, everything. It still gave me the moderate/strict NAT.

But then I did something different. I used a setting called "bridge mode". By opening the ports 88 and 3074, setting up my Xbox 360's static IP to the open ports' IP, and setting my router to "bridge mode", I successfully opened my NAT. I spent over a year calling my internet provider, going to threads like this one, and browsing countless sites to only try something that would be a gamble.

I am assuming that everyone who may have my type of router has to go through this same process to open their NAT.

To turn on "bridge mode", I had to instead type in 192.168.2.1 into my browser. With "bridge mode" on, I can't access the same page I did with it off, not that I have to.

I was wondering if someone can explain "bridge mode" better to me. I know that with it on, I can't connect a direct Ethernet cord from my Xbox to my modem, in which case I won't connect. Also, one of the four lights on my modem is not on. (I have three lights. Power, Ethernet [signaled by router being connected], DSL, and Internet. Internet is off].

Again, I want to know more about how and why it helped my connection.

Oh, and I used to have it turned on ages ago without any ports tampered with, and it gave me a clear NAT (as I thought anyway), but suddenly I got bunches of NAT messages on Halo 3.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

I have a question:

I've only done the DMZ step, and skipped the Port Fowarding part. Is it normal that my NAT eventually returns to Moderate after a couple of days?

All i do is just retype my 360 local IP, and it gives me open again.

Just wondering. I just did the PF part to see if that helps.

See what you can do about Saving your changes. Mine is in the 'system' menu. Have a good look/google your router and 'save changes'

In order to get the xbox working directly from the modem, you need to enter in some more details which are on the router since it usually performs the function of being a gateway for the webnet- ISP's username and password for example.
I got it to work. I found out my dad had bought another router (he just... does these things, don't ask :p), and he bought it at the exact same time that my NAT stopped being open, and started being moderate. I went into the network settings for the new router, and after going through all the tabs, I found out that it had UPnP. So I plugged my xbox's ethernet into the new router, but got the same problem as when I plugged it into the modem, it failed the test at the network stage.

I gave up on it for a bit, but after 5 restarted matchmaking searches in a row, and the inability to connect to 2 friends, I decided that I had to fix this. I started trying different combinations of settings, and then struck gold. It turned out that the xbox was unable to connect to the modem while it had the static IP settings on, because these were configured to my old router and computer's setup. When I finally connected to the modem, I got Open NAT.

So, then I tried connecting to my new router while my xbox was on Automatic, and it worked! I have Open NAT now.

Moral of the story? If you find yourself unable to connect to your modem to test whether it's your IP's fault, or your router's fault, reset your xbox's settings back to normal (oh, and don't worry about losing the static IP settings, the next time you switch back to static IP, it will already have everything setup (at least until you turn your xbox off, didn't test it that far)). I think you should add that to the guide, in case anyone else has trouble with connecting to the modem.

Anyway, thanks for the help, I probably wouldn't have thought of connecting to the modem without this guide.

Help! I'm really stuck! It's probably something minor but when I try this stuff I always get lost, or do something wrong.

I'm up to the last paragraph of the first post, and I have change the IP to static, and filled in everything that I wrote down earlier, however, should the IP address I typed into the computer be the same as the one I typed into the Xbox? Right now it is slightly different.

Secondly, what is the 'local' IP? Is it the IPv4 or the Default Gateway, because when I type in the IPv4 it doesn't give me the user/password screen.

I still have NAT problems, and I've frankly given up now. Two Xbox 360s connected to the same router through different cables. When one is on, it has Moderate NAT at best. When the other is on, Strict.

I don't know if it's the router's fault, the fact that I'm with the worst broadband company ever (AOL), or the fact that I'm just not allowed to have an Open NAT because I'm me, but whichever reason it is, it's bloody irritating.

I share this account with my brother and friend.
If you got destroyed, it was me.
If you had a decent challenge, it was my bro.
If you observed said account struggling to aim, shoot, or move separately, it was my friend.

K, I'm having some problems. My connection is through an aircard, which I broadcast through a linksys router. I went to change the PC IP, etc to static. It said "Settings won't take effect until connection is dialed again." so I disconnect and reconnect but the -blam!- thing somehow got set back to automatic! I tried it three times and every time it gets set back from manual!

What the -blam!- am I doing wrong? Thanks.

  • 07.04.2010 10:56 PM PDT

MUST READ: This is a tip for everyone opening there xbox ports, There is a reason why they are blocked. Because if you have them open your chances of being affected by a DDoS attack are way higher. If you open your nat your chances of getting "Host booted" are alot higher.

For those who don't understand opening your ports is like leaving your door open for a robber, The robber might not come to your house, But if he does and the doors open nothing is going to stop him from stealing your stuff.

So if you have moderate NAT i would leave it as that, But if you have strict it might be worth changing because you wouldn't be able to connect to many people.

Mobile wireless internet to wireless local internet? Whoa man. Whoa. You can do that some new smartphones. Get googling and put in the hard yards if you have open nat aspirations
