Ok, so I followed some of the steps, and when I checked my connection on the Xbox dashboard, it didn't say I have a moderate connection anymore. What does that mean?
If you don't get any message at the end of the test, it means your NAT is open! *fanfare*

Edit: Chef, make a really obvious link to portforward.com, as in:
Go to http://portforward.com for help with your specific router! because half of the problems people are having is because they have some obscure router.

Okay, heres my problem. I have tryed for about 6 months for me and my brothers xbox's to both be open NATs. My little brother and my mom dont want me messing with the router right now so ill do it later. For now i have made MY xbox static ip and have forwarded the ports this forum has told me to. It gave me a moderate NAT. Then i checked to see if it would stay that way so i turned off my xbox and turned it back on. it went strict. Later tonight i will edit this post to show you what else i try. Some one else please tell me what im doing wrong.

Have you tried a direct connection between your xbox and your modem? Connect your xbox directly to your modem with an ethernet cable, and then test the connection. If it's still moderate or strict, then you need to give your ISP a ring, because they're the problem.

If your connection is clean when you connect directly, then check if your router has UPnP as an option (also, tell me what kind of router you have), and if it does, turn it off. Now test, with all the ports forwarded.

If it still doesn't work, then try setting up a DMZ, and then test. Make sure to take off the ports you forwarded when you use the DMZ.

Do all these steps (which are all in the OP) and then report back.

Okay, so...Ive got my report for ya. I made static ips for both my brother and my xbox's. I then port forwarded one and DMZed the other. They both have only moderate NAT. I thought, "well, better listen to the man and plug the ethernet cord directly to the modem. Well, I did that. Then when i finally got the right cord, the internet wouldnt work because the modem only has one port...

Here are pics of the modem:

http://a.imageshack.us/img835/3150/modempic.jpg

Now the Router:

http://a.imageshack.us/img691/5118/routerpic.jpg

The router is a Wireless-N Broadband Router (WRT160Nv3) from linksys. It has (as far as I know) the lastest firmware update.

This is a big issue to me. I used to be able to get an open NAT while my bro just got a moderate or strict NAT. Im fine with him getting moderate and me getting open. He is too. I would like for this to be fixed before Reach comes out as well. Please guys, help me out. I dont know what the problem is. I have two computers (one upstairs and one downstairs)and we recently just got a laptop. I have a Zune HD and i was wondering if all of these things could play a role in My problem with the NAT.

Also, on my screen I have the options "Single Port,Forwarding,Port Range Forwarding,Port Range,Triggering and DMZ. I used the single port fowarding and the dmz. So if anyone passes through this forum and has an idea of what the problem is please..please...please help me.

Oh, you have 2 xboxes... I have no idea then, that's beyond my grasp of networking.

Edit: A quick search found a possible solution. Does your router have Firmware Version 3.0.02.001? Check the version, because this version is supported by MS as XBL compatible, so it may work with 2 xboxes. Beyond that, dive into Google, and you might find an answer. If you don't, go to a tech forum, and ask there.

I tell you what, Im sick of this problem...

I can only get both xbox's to have moderate NAT. I searched for this "Firmware Version 3.0.02.001" you speak of. I was not able to find one that is as new as mine. Could you please post a link to the update? I have been all over google. Ive been searching for a solution. It has done nothing. NO ONE KNOWS THE SOLUTION!!! If anyone has the same router( i posted on my last post) could you please explain QoS? It seems like it would work if i knew how to use it.

Please, Please, Please help me and everyone else with this issue. My parents are sick of me kicking them off the internet to experiment with solutions that dont work. Also, I got on today and my lil bro has OPEN NAT and I have STRICT NAT. Lame.

The only way I can ever get OPEN is if I get on first. Which is nearly impossible since my lil bro is ALWAYS on.

  • 08.04.2010 5:26 PM PDT

You will never get it to open for both xbox's at the same time unless you have two different external IPs from your Service Provider.

Not really going to dive deep into the details, but it's just not technically possible to have two xbox's operating as open NAT at the same time.

Think about it like this. Xbox Live recognizes your xbox based on your external IP, which since you are doing NAT, means you are sharing among multiple devices (including the two xbox's). So to make the NAT open you have to forward communications on certain ports to the xbox of choice. You can't have your router forward all communications on specified ports to two different devices as it would result in nothing working.

So the solution is for you to buy a second internet connection, share an xbox, or deal with moderate NAT.

Okay, well my little bro can deal with moderate, but I cant. Any way to have it to where he ALWAYS gets moderate and I ALWAYS get open(I know for a fact there is a way because it used to be like that for me and him)? So since I know there is a way, can someone tell me how to do it?

Alright, for your problem with the sites giving you different ports to forward, it's just because you haven't read far enough down the guide. The 2 extra ports portforward.com tells you to forward aren't always necessary, so they're mentioned at the bottom of the guide as a secondary method (I think to make the process as simple as possible). You should just forward all the ports mentioned on portforward.com to be absolutely sure.

Also, make a proper link to portforward.com (that one has a random ellipsis in the middle...). Just follow the instructions on portforward.com and you should be fine.

I know exactly how you feel man. Does anyone have a solution to mine?

  • 08.05.2010 9:15 AM PDT

I'm confused. Does the static IP of the Xbox have to be the same or different as the static IP of my computer. Right now mine are different. Also do you open the ports with your Xbox's static IP on the settings or the computer's IP?

The xbox and pc have to be different IP's or nothing will work.

Forward the following ports to the Xbox's IP and you will have OPEN NAT.

Xbox Live
UDP 88
TCP 3074
UDP 3074
TCP 53
UDP 53

For the kid who has two xbox's, you need to make sure that you remove all the port forwarding from his xbox and point it to yours.

I don't think we can give out any more specific instructions that what has already been given in this thread.

Slow down, read the posts from the beginning and if you still can't get it working, save up your money and hire some local service come out and fix it for you.

The way to make what you ask happen, is to forward the ports to your xbox's static IP and don't forward any of ports to his XBOX. There is no other way.

One thing that was mentioned before in regards to DMZ's 99% of the routers out there will preference Port Forwarding over DMZ settings. So if you clear out all your Port Forwarding settings for the Ports mentioned in my above post, and just put your Xbox's static IP in the DMZ you will also have OPEN NAT.

Well, my household is sick of me and my little brother complaining so were bout to be on the phone with my ISP. If they fix my problem, I will post a thread with an exact guide of what they told me to do. If it doesnt...ill just foward the ports to mine and screw over my brother.

This thread helped massively for Halo 3, glad to see a Reach version for new(er)-comers. Thread saved so this can be a Top Forum Topic once more.

Oh, my bad. Here's an updated version of what my router setting looks like: http://i38.tinypic.com/1zgxez7.jpg

And heres what the port forwarding site is telling me: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Belkin /F5D7230-4/Xbox_Live_360.htm

Identical isn't it? (Except obviously the IP address on the site isn't the same as mine). So what am I doing wrong?
And when I'm playing games like MW2 and I can be in a match where everyone has a 5 bar connection, but the highest I'll reach is a 3 bar. This is because I have strict NAT, right? Or is it just the router itself?
